That's really helpful, thank you! If you were to start again, what would you do differently? I am thinking of doing a similar project, but with an extra wall to hide cables and hoses behind as the pond will only be viewed from three sides.

Hi, thats a beautiful job. I dug a hold about that size and was going to put a tarp in it since the ground isn't holding the water when I filled it up. It is basic, just for drinking water for my birds and goat/soon to be small cow's. I wasn't sure if the mat would be the best idea since animals might walk in it.. Do you have any suggestions to be strong enough and hold water? Aprox 15' X 8' Thanks, Robert

Pretty much your garden pond if the water of your pond turns green, I made a filter to remove these algae without the ultra violet lamp. Look at my garden pond it shows step by step ok

It looks good I built a 300 gallon pond in my small backyard also, it took 6 hours but it's only 18 inches at the deepest and the comets love it. In the winter here it completely freezes over but the fish return back to life when it thaws out.

Is there anyone out there capable of giving some pond pump and filter info - video is best. Or is it just me. Does everyone know how to set up a pump except me? The inlet, outlet, skimmer box, bio filter.............what the xxxx. Plenty of holes and pretty ponds, just need more understanding of the most important part - the flow.

It's less work needed to mow lawn, weed the garden, sweep the pavestones etc.....actually when you add it all up, it's cheaper and less work with a pond, I should know, I just put in a pond and I find myself drinking beer listening to music while watching my neighbor toil away..lol ...well done 6string (but it seems a lot on the technical side!)

@RichyJam2011 Hello and thanks for your comment. to answer your question regarding the leaking liner and the puncture that it has, I feel sure that something will be available, however, I feel that you really do need to seek professional help and guidence on this matter as the bonding agent will obviously need to be fish friendly...sorry I cant help you more.

Wow that's a real nice job. I wonder if you help me with something. We have a fish pond roughly about the same size as this one. Earlier this year a rock fell in from our rockery, and has obviously punched a hole in the lining. Its not a major leak, but we do have to top it up on a regular basis. Some of our koi are over 10 years old. I was wondering if there's some type of quick fix to this? or will I have to transfer the fish out and replace the lining with new?

I am going to get out a backhoe and work on a pond this fall in my yard... I hope mine looks half as nice as yours thanks for the video. Did you have someone pour your concrete or did you mix it? Also, if you had it to do over wouldyou have built your pretty brick over the top of your black liner so you could see the brick work or is there a reason you did not do that? Thanks

@MickScarborough the cap stones are laid on top of bricks, the liner is one course down. I think it does show this on the video where the liner is trimmed and set into the brick work, I guess if it ever gets slpit and/or needs replace the I will have a running batton, but till then it sees ok so far. @JustinSticks hello, well thats a tricky one to answer as I did it purely as a personal DIY project, but based on what is the normal for labour around where I live, which is around £150 per day then this project inclusive of all materials, filtration, pump, hoses etc would cost around £1500 to £1800 plus VAT. As a DIY project it was around £700 to £800. I hope this has answered your question. :)

@The0Burger0King Hello, I used a liner protection layer under the main pond liner. As for on top of the liner, ie, so that you can see it, I havent done this yet, but I'm looking at washed tumbled blue stones, or something lavender. .. but I'm open for suggestions... :)

The black tarp-looking thing is in fact the pond liner, and these pictures where aken during the pond's first fill to test the wall strength. the water level is now just, and I only mean just ( ;) ) above that level, which means its about 1 inch below the overflow outlet. :)

@lasbarricadasnow Thanks for the comment, I guess you have a point, but then where do you stop, the cement used in brick work is very poluting during manufacture, The brick and the slabs are mass produced, and thewn there is the energy used in running the pump and filtration, not to mention the ozone gived off by all ultraviolet lamps, but then is it right to keep fish at all, would it be better to let them be free??? for me I like this in my garden, but I acknowledge your point :)

@archi912 Hello, I did this all myself, it took me five days start to finish, thenhalf a day to fill the pond, with is now fully filled unlike the pictures at the end of the video. The total cost, including everything, ie, sand, cement, common bricks, stone bricks, slab tops, underliner, liner, pump, filtration and hoses added up to around £700. :) oh and that included around £100 for fish

@theorigamimagic Hello, yep...100% correct, the pump and hose stay in the water, except when the pump needs a clean, in which case just turn it off take it out of the water, clean it and then put it pack in. one important note to remember is that a water pump should never be turned on unless it is in water, as its the water that cools the shaft surfaces etc. As for the water, plain old tap water is perfect, before adding fish, leave for a couple of days to desolve away the chlorine. :)

@TheBoaConstrictor95 You can finish the inside how ever you want really, the plastic liner is the water proof ponf liner, and without it the water would not remain there, however, you could render the inside, and treat with a water proofing layer, that is fish safe.

@phantomofthedrivein..... well actually they are fish :) but......yes they all seem well enough and the ice was only at most a couple of inches thick, so the water below the ice would be definately above freezing, as it didnt freeze. however it would possibly be a different story with ashallower pond or different climate. :)

@princesharky Thanks for your comment :) right when things get cold the fish pretty much stop eating and basical go to the bottom of the pond. even when the ice has completely covered the pond the fish will be ok so dont worry about them. this winter my pond froze over the thickness was abnout 2 inches, but now things are a good bit warmer and they are all swimming about, I guess nature figures these things out for us. hope this has answered your question :)

@ElijahTurtle Hello, the capacity is around 8000 ltrs, the UV is 30 watt and the filtraction is 33000 ltrs per hour with extra triple rated foam for the gravity system. Also has a 'Y' variable water splitter from the pump that allows me to set the water flow to the filter and the waterfall seperately. The pump is rated at 18000 ltrs per hour. thankd for your comment :)

Very nice! What is the estimated capacity of the pond & what type of filtration do you use?

Excellent Pond, I recomend you use a UV filter for not green water.

@sixstringbiker You will have to keep us posted. I installed a 150 gallon preform in my moms garden 2 years ago for mothers day and then last year i intalled a 30 gallon waterfall. Its was alright for my first lone project but i am going to rip all of that out soon. I have a bunch of things planned so its going to be legit this time.

@eastcoastzj thanks for the comment :) and I have to say that I agree in all parts. This pond does fit the garden I have, however, fingers crossed, I will be moving soon and I will have much more room to play with, and I think multo levels and more rocks is the way to go :)

I think you did a great job for the amount of space you were working with. If i were you though i would of tried to make a two different levels and thrown some bigger rocks around the edges to cover up that liner. But either way its very elegant and it seems like you put enough time into the surrounding stone work to make up for the minor flaws. A++ brotha

@lespaulguitarist92 :) hello, I was lucky I guess, it was a glorious week full of sun, so it was a quick 5-day build. if it had rained it would have been slighty longer job and a good deal messier, but otherweise I dont think it would have been a problem as any water on the outside of the liner would have drained away to the bottom. I guess I would have got very wet though :)

The whole thing cost about £700, but that includes the liner, the filtration unit and the pump the skip for the mud,,,AND....some Fish too...so not bad at all, start to finish it took 7 days...let me know how you get on with yours :)

@brenda4riley :) hello, I think the only real way to join two liners is via a plastic welding process, however I dont really know where to direct you on that part...HOWEVER.. :) pond liners are available in really big sizes and will be supplied in one piece, if I was you I would get onto ebay and then post some questions regarding your size requirements. The biggest I ever seen was 20m by 30m...which is massive. dont forget to add the side walls and the top section to you pond size. Good luck :)

@sixstringbiker .... this will allow the flow to be regulated indipendantly to the waterfall and the filtration unit. and it will also allow the waterfall to be turned off if you want to, without it effecting the filtration. the outflow fron the filter has hoses directly into the pond and this adds enough oxygen. hope this helps. :)

@almieda321 :) hello, right irst off, Ive ditched the pressurized bio filter in favour of a gravity system. it is much easier to maintain, and i've also increase the capacity...see my video 'my pond update for details and a view of the system. I bought all the sysyem from ebay and the parts are, 18000 l/h pump, 30000 l/h gravity filter with 30 watt UV, I removed one of the tree internal shelves and added another set of filter sponges. and use a water splitter to direct pump to the waterfall. :)

@SuperMiMiMonkey :) not at all, but it does help define the boarder to your pond. what I would suggest then, given that you may not be allowed to buy stones is once the hole has been dug out, slide your spade about two inches (50mm) under the grass the meets your pond and gently make a 'grass flap' all the way round, put your liner in and then fold back the flap. about 6 inches should be enough, but fill your pond first, so the liner has finished stretching. good luck :)

@benbay001 :) hello, you are refering to whats known as shuttering. Believe it or not, concrete does not stick to wood when poured in big amounts, it simply seperates leaving the wooden board almost entirely free of any marks, leaving the concrete with a very smooth surface. hope this helps and thanks for the question :)

I have also heightened the waterfall a little and increased the capacity of the filtration as I was still getting a little green water. filtration up from 11000 l/h to 30000 l/h, UV up from 8w to 30w and pump up from 5000 l/h to 18000 l/h. the water is as clear as drinking water and the extra capacity is used in the bigger water fall... I'm also planning the lighting which will be installed soon :)

Hi Nash :) as an alternative to a pond liner, you can concrete render the inner surfaces, including the bottom. The render mix is typically mixed with fibres to add strength, and again typically painted with an additional water sealing 'paint'. The low level of the water in my pond was only due to it being half filled during its first water stressing, it is now of course full with the water level at the same hight as the top of the liner and it does look much better. :)

I'm wondering if you need the liner or if its possible to make it water-tight (like a frogs a__) some other way. To me, the black liner spoils the look of the whole project. Maybe it wouldn't be as noticable if the water was up to the edge.

you are absolutely right, I do need many more fish, I'm currently looking for fish that are small and swim in sholes. I would like to fill my pond with hundreds of small rather than only Kois. if you have too many...possible sell some I guess is the answer. :) or build an even bigger pond :)

Well to be honest its hard to say, when you say smaller, how much smaller? just remember that the Bio/UV filtration and pump takes a lump of your cash, as do the build materials and liner. If you was planning one say half the size of mine then budget for £500, which is around $800 US. that would assume a brick built pond and also depends upon you local building material costs. hope this helps :)

Hello :) well I think that abstract shaps are more interesting visually, but its really all down to the individual. They are definately harder to build though, curved brick work requires lots of cutting otherwise you end up with big mortar lines...but each to their own :)

Hello again :) The cost can vary depending on your choice of bricks and linner and filtration system, also how far you are building from your electrical supply. My project was less than £700 in total, and that included some fish and the skip to remove all the earth I dug. If you have ebay access then a 3-ply liner will cost about £60, the UV biofilter about £120, pump about £70, bricks and cement £200, slabs £100, then some fish and a bit of hard work :) hope this helps :)

sorry for the delay in answering, I missed tis one. ok...controling algae is possibly the biggest problem of all, specially in areas that are very sunny, however, if you can introduve some shading, eg, small over hanging trees or even creeping vine canopy then this will realy help as will lillies. you cab also double up on you UV and filtration. :) Hello, you are welcome to ask as many questions as you feel you need. The electrical cables are indeed placed undergound, with a small terminal box at the pond for electrical termination for pump and filter. The underground cable is armour core industrial cable and the supply is from my garage through a 6amp braeker and RCD, which trips if there is any circuit problems. come spring I intend to cover the filter unit with a small wooden beer barrel to pretty things up :) hope this helps :)

Hello, yes it does, the electrical supply is needed to both run the water pump and the UV (ultraviolet) lamo that is built into the Bio-filter. Its the UV lamp that prevents green water algae. it does this by making the green water algoe clump together to form larger lumps that can then be trapped by the filter. The microbs that form in the filtration unit then basically eat these large clumps. Hope this helps. :)

Hello, its called pond liner, its a 3-ply plastic sheet that is used to hold the water in the pond. Typically you buy it by the metre and trim to fit as in my video. I hope this helps you :)

hello :) I got the liner from ebay. The pond is about 4.5 metres by 2.5 metres but dont forgey the depth and top part which needs to be added to both sides. I ordered a 3-ply liner 6 metres by 8 metres which was a good size for my pond. dont forget the underlay...good luck and I hope this has been of some help. expect to pay around £60 :)

hello :) thanks for the comment regarding my brick work, its a bit of a hobby with me the 'old DIY' :) My pond is about 4.5m by 2.5m and a water depth of about 0.75m when full. your pond sounds like a monster!!!! 10,000gal !!! thats almost a small lake...just gunna pop to your page and take a look...good luck...bet your glad the digging is over...definately the hardest bit by far :)

hello, I took a look at you pond on your video, and it looks really cool. The digging is a back breaker isnt it ? Ive found that the Algae can be controlled well if you clean out your filter once a week. but its really all down to your UV system, and the capacity of the filter. The UV lamp will make the green water Algae stick together and form bigger lumps and this is how your filter will catch it. basically if your pond is 3000ltres, go for a 10000 ltr pump and 25w UV lamp..hope this helps :)

Hello :) these pictures where taken during and just after the build (5 days of hard slog) the pond is now full to about and inch below the top of the liner. AND...looks better for it lol

Hi, yep.. definately a lot of work...but worth the effort me thinks.. filling your pond in and then paving over it is a pretty monsterous job in itself...hope the result was what you were after :)

Thanks for the comment. I do have a biomechanical UV pressurised system installed, at the water is crystal now, the pictures on the video was taken just after finishing,so water was changed and now all good.. :)

If you could let me know what size and depth you would like and what type of pond ie. ground level or above ground, then I will work out what you need in also work out the correct filter and pump size..:)

well, that is quite a small liner, but a small pond is possibly what you have in mind. My Liner was 5m x 7m giving a pond of 2.5m x 4.5m, this allowed up to about 1m depth and a little left over to lock under the top brick level. But it all really depends on your prefered Depth. Remember that what ever Depth you would like must be doubled on length and width as to accomodate both ends..PLUS a little for tucking under you bricks or stone work if its ground level.

hello :) The black plastic is the pond liner, its made of a 3-ply construction, it also requires an underlay. The underlay I went for was first old carpet fitted to the shape of the pond followed by a proper underlay. This is used to protect the liner from any sharp stones and edges, once done the liner is placed inside the pond, and filled with water, pulling gengle on it as it fills, then just tidy it up and trim it to suit for above ground ponds. thanks for you comment :)

below the ground level its about 18 inches so you are spot on, when filled to just below the liner level it will be around 28 inches. I did have a much smaller pond to start with (about 1m x 1.5m) and it was very shallow but even that didnt didnt have ant frost issues. The new pond is around 4.5m x 2.5m. What size is your pond? have you calculated the pump and filter sizes, and are you opting for gravity or a pressurised system?? and dont forget UV clarification. :)

Thanks for your comment :) I still ended up totally filling a 6-yard skip though, seems that you keep digging and digging and digging...haha...but then all of a sudden its done. One of the best things about a raised pond is that it also ends up with a sitting area all around it...yay!!! hope you will post pictures of yours.. :)
