I am skipping the plastic liner, and instead doing a more permaculture-organic way: clay/rock lined. :) My husband and I are also including fish and ducks to the equation after the pond has been properly established over so many years.
On a side note: I have seen small ponds that don't require plastic linings, that have been installed years ago, and are doing just fine. So to say that you generally need to have a plastic lining if you have a small pond, is incorrect. Plastic liners are great and useful, but not necessarily needed.. it's more used as a cosmetic look, or for a quicker pond result in comparison to the more natural-organic ponds.
