How to build a Fish Pond - Part 21 | Pond Plants & Waterfall - Final
Pond 11 years ago 286,051 views
This is the final video of our How to build a Fish Pond series. Planting plants and starting up the waterfall. We will give you tips on using pond plants and how to make your landscape look good.
Why do you not have a bottom drain or bottom pump connected to a filter system?

We removed the pond only a week after completion to film a new tutorial series! SOrry we didn't introduce fish before the demo!
This is on our "YouTube Set"!
By the way, the subtitles are very funny - and not very accurate.
Thanks - I love your videos. As a goat owner myself, I really enjoyed Billie Jeans joy at jumping on rocks.

Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
PS I loved the little goat. I don't think that the plant's will survive with him running around ;)
Thanks for watching.

We actually tore the pond out the next week so we could prepare "The Set" for the Frog Pond video Shoot.
All in the name of information, education and inspiration!
Thank you so much for watching!

Especially the tips on edge treatment are very helpful.
The final result is surely something you guys can be proud of. Take care!
1. What happens hen there's a heavy downpour of rain, or worse - a hurricane? Is all lost?
2. How do yo change out the water and how often does the water need to be changed?
3. Do the fish feed naturally on the plants/algae/bugs or what do I feed them?
Thanks! :)
1. Grade the property away from the pond and install an overflow to keep the water away from the pond.
2. This pond could use a small water change once a month for routine maintenance and we do recommend this pond get drained once a year for annual maintenance. There are other more advanced ponds with fancy life support systems that do not require the annual drain and clean.
3. yes the do feed on the ecosystem naturally but do better if you offer them food as well.
Hope that helps!
Greetings from Australia. Wonderful series of videos.
And we all love the goat. Do you have any flowers left on that site ?
A couple of quick questions:
(1) early on your seem to refer to "45mm EPDM". Clearly I have mis-heard or are unfamiliar with the shorthand you are using. I am planning to use 1.06mm EPDM ... and wonder whether this is thinner or thicker than what you are using ?
(2) That pre-backed patch you are using looks simple. But I don't know if I can obtain them here. Can one just cut a piece from excess liner and apply one's own goo to make a patch ?
(3) Also interested to know how to properly specify the underlay, which in my case will go over ground that may have tree roots nearby. Clearly the underlay needs to be just as flexible as the liner itself.
Much appreciated
KS
1.02 millimeters (what you would call "40 mil")
1.14 millimeters (what you would call "45 mil").
No need to reply to this.
Everyone enjoy their ponds !
(1) Just to confirm, when you (and other sites) say
"45 mil" you actually mean "1.45 mil" and when you say
"1.45 mil" you mean 1.45 millimeters.
(you do NOT mean 45/1000 of an inch).
(2) Also, is this the same material as the "Black EPDM 45 mil" advertised as roofing membrane ?
Sorry to be pedantic, but I want to make sure my order is right and at the best price wihout ordering the wrong stuff !
thanks
1. 45 mil EPDM is the standard rubber used in the US for the last couple decades. I'm curious as well. I can only imagine it would drive the cost up quite a bit for shipping.
2. In the US there was a glue that we could get our hands on for patches and seams like you are talking about. I can't get the product anymore so we are forced to use the patch and primer.
3. The fabric we get is called geotextile underlayment. You can find the product in construction trade for paving as well.
Best of luck to you on tracking down the resources. Thanks for watching!
I am in process of building a small pond in my backyard and this has helped me a lot.
You guys are passionate about your work.
However, I don't find them to be that cute and prefer to think of them as pests that need to be relocated back to the wild spayed & neutered and with rabies shots, because as it is right now, if I was to have a pond in my front yard they'll fight over the water, as last week 2 were growling at each other over a dog dish of water that's for my chickens. Raccoon's have real scary growls that can go very high pitched or very low in tone. So, I'm in a dilemma with the raccoon situation as they aren't going away anytime soon in my neighborhood, and will have to build in some sort of ledge where they can't pollute the water with their hands...I don't know.
Most of the pond kits we put together for our clients are customized to meet our clients design rather than you buying a kit and making your design fit the kit.
We are of course poised to assist in your DIY pond design too. Let me know what we can do to get you dialed in! eric@theponddigger.com
Muito obrigado pelo vídeo!
This video was very helpful :)
The fish have a shelf to hide under, but the Heron still almost cleaned me out.
I would like a Billy Jean now, when I was a kid (no pun intended) we had a Tabitha!
(1) I am going to have a greenhouse on the Southern side, and I am in planting zone 6c. Is it possible to have part of my pond in the greenhouse, and part of it outside the greenhouse? I will be putting pure blue tilapia in my pond, and they can't get below 47 degrees or they die. It gets cold here in winter, last winter got down in the 20's. So if a good part is inside that should keep the water warmer. Do you think this is doable?
(2) My next question is, if you do think that part in, part out is doable ,since the water in the greenhouse will be warmer, how deep would it need to be so the cold don't get to my fish which prefer 70 degree water? The idea is they can go outside the greenhouse or inside depending on which temperature they prefer, and come in to hide from predators if need be.
(3) How can I figure out how much temperature the waterfall will need? I need a decent sized pond. I will put the waterfall inside. Tropical plants will be in the greenhouse. Keep in mind I will be running the pumps and lights off my battery bank, which is solar powered. I need 12 volt pumps if possible.
(4) Can you recommend 12 volt pumps and how can I figure out how much pump I need and waterfall to get enough air in the water for the fish? I can build a very high waterfall since I will have a greenhouse big enough for trees.
Thank you, and what are your thoughts?
Very educational videos...thx a lot! I'm just starting a pond/waterfall project in my garden....and I'll watch this several more times to get it wright..
One quick question...have any tips for making a grass edge of the pond, one that looks natural? Thank you
THANK YOU
KEN FROM PA
Thanks again! Great series
Thank you. Great video.
Also, what is the approximate gallons of the pond?
P.S. You are very informative and us youtubers really appreciate the time and effort you put in your videos. :)
If you need a place to film making another I offer my back yard. lol
Here in Denmark we have freezing winters and hot summers, so any tips and tricks on concrete ponds would be a great help in deciding witch material to use. The pond I am planning is going to service as a drinking pond for our house pets too. Including miniature pigs and Great Dane dogs. I fear that the plastic membrane is going to break under a 'drinking beach' if it only have loose rubble over it?
A video on lining materials (PVC, EPDM, rubber, concrete) cons / pros, building price, would be highly appreciated.
PS I miss the goat already!
:)
Brilliant videos really helpful, your ponds look awesome,
Can you tell me if any of the Helix product range is sold in the UK?
Thanks
Most homeowners want to select their own fish. They become pets, like the goat. My customers have never wanted me to stock their fish for them.
One question, our plan is to make a pond that is around 5 x 8 with a depth of 18" or so, no fish, a waterfall with lights. It will be a slight kidney shape. Does every pond require a skimmer because we noticed that you put the pump in there? If the pond is not that big can we just put the pump somewhere hidden in the pond? Thanks
Your info was great and the pond is beautiful!
Thanks
Anyway, I am starting my first pond..much smaller than this one. I don't see how you would have been able to drain this pond completely using the pond's plumbing alone. What are your thoughts on the skimmer idea vs. a pump at the bottom of the pond? Thank you!
Thank for your kind compliments!
I can see why you made the pond for the series, and when I read the comments I was so sad that you had to dismantle it. Knowing that you were probably a fledgling business and seeing how careful and meticulous you were in your habits -- I have no doubt that everything possible was recycled.
Granted the music was terrible - but hey, the guys are landscapers, not the BBC or Spielberg. Also, l was in fits of giggles not only at the tiny goat (thar?) but at one point during Video 19 or 20 my husband and I started chortling as we swear we could hear a woman in the thrills of passion in the background. Eric deserves a medal for his composure through a cacophony of cicadas, dogs barking, children crying, men shouting, women thrilling and screaming, babies crying, frogs croaking (who must have been bitterly disappointed at the dismantling of the Toad Taj Mahal), cars and finally a tiny goat weaving and trit trotting to and fro stealing the limelight.
And I STILL learned how to put in a pond, plumbing, lighting and draining and planting. I have also got to get some of that waterfall foam. Brilliant stuff. You are a good man Eric , as they say here in NZ, your blood's worth bottling.
In the grand scheme of things, not much was wasted I would imagine. And if one dismantled pond teaches 20 000 people to make ponds for wildlife, frogs, dragonflies, beetles, bugs as well as goldfish, and creates peaceful little home havens for families to sit together in the evening. Dismantle away I say.
Please keep on with the good work.
By the way, what are the causes and suggested treatments - natural or non chemical in a goldfish pond with bugs and frogs etc , for green thread algae and what looks like a brown soft silt in the water?
Look at it this way, it takes most people that never build a pond, 2 to 3 attempts to build a good working one. Many after the first failed attempt will rip their mosquito breeding algae green water hole out, fill it back in and trough all the material away. Why not build a set and show people how to do it right the first time, this will result in less material being thrown away and effecting our environment.
Think about it,
Dietmar
Do you have a video where you shows how you can clean a waterfallfilter ?
Are the products Helix available in Belgium or neighbourcountries ?
