Hi, love this by the way.. What sealant did you use for the window? And do you use perspex
neozeroone
neozeroone - 5 years ago
Turbo Tez HA6 marine grade sealant it's pretty cheap and fish safe and yes perspex window lasted really well and no scratches even after a weekly clean!

how cold does it get there in the winter? like, is it okay for me to build that for fish and turtles in northern nj
ChrisDaFish
ChrisDaFish - 6 years ago
Ok, thanks!
neozeroone
neozeroone - 6 years ago
ChrisDaFish Not that cold down to about -4c but due to wood surround water doesn't freeze. Koi can take a lot colder as long as there is a hole for air. Not sure about turtles tho.

Do you live in Canada? If yes is the water freezing a lot ?

Véronique Pernet Add an oxygen machine at the bottom of your pond in the center And also add some water heaters. I think only oxygen machine is enough to prevent water from freezing.

Hi, love your pond, I'm about to start one very similar, but I am really struggling to work out what thickness of glass I need? Can I ask what the thickness of your was? And did you find it easy to fit this over the liner,
Thank you in advance
Nathan.

What thickness acrylic would you recommend? 20mm thicker or thinner?
neozeroone
neozeroone - 6 years ago
15mm + is fine obviously if window is larger you'll need thicker.

are the wood sleepers treated?
moody

+neozeroone clearly no issues with the treatment affecting the fish then, good to know.
Gonna have a go at this in the spring, have a couple of left over sleepers.
neozeroone
neozeroone - 7 years ago
moody They are pressured treated, had them for over three years now and are still good as new.

Really nice pond there. Want to build similar. With that depth did you have any problems wintering over at all?

Cheers

Hi, Has the perspex become scratched due to fish or having to clean the viewing window? Would you use glass if you did it again? I am constructing a similar pond out of sleepers in a patio which at the rear of my house with decking about a metre above my lawn.
neozeroone
neozeroone - 10 years ago
No scratches at all, would definitely use perspex again as greater clarity and flexibility than glass. Only negative is cost!

I have an acrylic glass cleaner takes about 2 minutes to clean every few weeks.

Hi Mark, thanks for comments, would love to have had a 2.4m x 2.4m if I had the room! 15mm perspex window should be fine just make sure you get a good quality perspex, mine was about £75 for 800mm x 600mm piece. I left a 100mm overlap on my window too, to attach to the sleepers. I applied sealant directly to the perspex (3 layers deep) then attached the perspex to the sleepers using a screw in each corner and then heavily filled using more sealant around the edging. This gave a watertight seal.

Fantastic job on the window, building a 2.4m x 2.4m sleeper build like yours but half in the ground and 3 sleepers high (60cms) I'm wondering if I could use a piece of 15mm perspex 1000 x 500 to give me a viewing window of 800 x 300 leaving a 100 overlap all round to screw to pond. Mine would mean cutting a 800 x 100 section out of the top sleeper. Do you think 15mm perspex will be strong enough to hold the water pressure? Did you seal the liner on the back of perspex or other way round?

What size sleepers are you using and what's the size of the pond?
neozeroone

Its 15mm Perspex with pre-drilled holes in each corner screwed into liner/ sleepers and heavily sealed with PU18 and gold lable pond sealant.
