No bottom drain? Flexible tubing? Next time you build a pond, do it right

+JollieOllie85 i have prestigious certifications.

Also, without a bottom drain and with all of those rocks at the bottom of the pond, you have to drain and completely clean out your pond every year. With a true bottom drain and no rocks, you do not have to do that. You should not have rocks at the bottom of your pond or jagged submerged rocks. Enjoy cleaning out your pond covered in rotting shit. Good thing i will never have to do that because i built my pond correctly.

+JollieOllie85 My comments are not based on personal opinion, they are based on sheer fact. I guess you could use 2 inch flexible hose, but it is expensive. You need AT least 2 inch pipe because leaves will get stuck and you may not notice it at first, but the flow will diminish over time. Also, flexible tubing is much more prone to leaking. With pvc, the connections are a solvent weld so the connections are literally fused together. It is as if the pvc is continuous and leaks will never occur if installed correctly. Why would you want to reposition the bottom drain to any area? The bottom drain is meant to be at the lowest point of the pond and the water intake needs to be flush with the liner for it to be effective. All the debris funnels down to the lowest point of the pond to the drain. Since the opening is flush with the liner, it just gets sucked right in. With your "satellite drain" or whatever you call it, the debris does not funnel down into the drain. A siphon will not naturally remove debris. Yes i have my pump attached to my bottom drain, but the debris funnels itself into the drain. With your system, you are relying on a pump that has to be powerful enough, not only to move water, but to suck in the debris, while my system does it naturally. Also, you are not supposed to have jagged submerged rocks in your pond that will scratch fish and cause infection. I know you might say something like "it is so fish can hide from predators" but if you have a deep enough pond, you do not need to run the risk of having predators. Also, with flexible tubing and barbed fittings, raccoons can redirect the flow and drain the pond and then make a meal out of your fish. I have had fish in shallow ponds get eaten by raccoons. I have not ever had a problem with raccoons in my main pond since it is five feet deep. Also, rocks collect DOCs or Dead Organic Compounds that decompose and release ammonia that harm your fish. Also, you need a priming pot or leaf trap. before your pump. Leaves will get stuck in the impeller of your pump and diminish the flow. So not only will leaves get stuck in your small narrow flexible tubing, it will also get stuck in your pump. You need rigid tubing to use a leaf trap. There are also many disadvantages to a small buried pressure filter like what you have. You would be better off building your own filter. I have a moving bed filter with k3 kaldnes made out of a 55 gallon drum. Cheap bead filters are complete shit. High quality bead filters have an air blower. When you backwash your cheap bead filter, not all of the debris is flushed out. The backwashing system in cheap bead filters is simply ineffective. The design of your pond is flawed.

This pond had a satellite drain attached to the pump, a satellite drain removes debris from the bottom just like a bottom drain, however it is completely portable as it is attached with flexible hose, meaning I can reposition the drain as and when I see fit in any area of the pond, unlike a fixed bottom drain. This is also a much simpler & much more cost effective system as no external components needed. The drain cost me £20.

What is your issue with flexible hose? "a flexible pipe for conveying a liquid" why does it need to be ridged?

Whilst I appreciate you taking the time to view the vid, I feel your comments are based on personal opinion and not fact, perhaps even lack of experience in pond builds. There are pros and cons to all systems depending on your geographical location and climate. What works for your pond might not necessarily work for mine, and visa versa.

Thank you

+Petlover13 Why are you telling me to shut up? You don't want to have rocks in a koi pond. http://www.koiphen.com/forums/showthread.php?127046-Why-Most-Koiphen-Members-Discourage-Rocks-In-Ponds!

+JollieOllie85 The video is over year old. I have since removed the rocks from my 20 gallon aquarium. There is a huge difference between a natural open system and a closed system such as a pond. Rivers have much more flow than your little pump will provide. Your cobbles at the bottom collect food and leaves that rot. In a river, there is too much flow for that to happen. Also a lake is too deep. Also, the clay in a lake naturally purifies the water and most lakes do not have a rock bottom. They have a clay bottom. Rivers have rocks, but the flow is too fast. A river is not a pond. You would not need those stones that will cut your fish near the top if your pond was deeper. Also, a small fish tank with stones is very easy to vacuum with a gravel vacuum and a good sized pond is a lot of work. Also, if you have larger rocks at the bottom like rocks bigger than 2.5 inches, than you will not be able to vacuum them. That is why you will have to drain and clean out your pond to remove the dead organic compounds. It is very easy to remove dead organic compounds in an aquarium, but not so much in a pond.

Fish/carp have lived in rivers, ponds & lakes full of rocks for millions of years, in this pond the rocks give shade and protection, the rocks are only around the surface area, the bottom is cobbles.

I see in your video you have stones in the bottom of your fish tank, does this not contradict your own logic? Goldfish are also ornamental fish.

Frank: I used the Bioforce Cyprio 4000 litre per hour pump with a 6000 litre per hour pressure filter with built in UV, my pond was between 4000-4500 litres so this system kept the water really clean and of good quality.
If your keeping Koi then ideally you are recommended to cycle the volume of water in the pond every hour, if for goldfish then every 2 hours.

Hi there, I like the work that you have done, looks really beautiful in your garden, just for future for your self and koi it is too small, I built a 20ftx5ftx3ft "3ft being depth" indoor pond in my workshop and my koi soon out grew it, "just for the record no over stocking I had 6 koi and 2 mirror carp" but I'm sure you want it bigger now anyway haha, but a good start and think your going in the right direction, good video and a thumbs up from me
