Hey, been watching your videos over and over again figuring how you've done it. How do you fix your liner when you build the retaining brick walls around the outside of the pond? do you fold them into gap and brick over? and what is best place to buy the bits and pieces that you would recommend? Thank you!
Wrighty
Wrighty - 6 years ago
Hi, There is no gap between the bricks as this is filled in with cement to give the wall added strength. The liner is fitted under the top copings. The liner is cut back so it only covers half of the top of the wall and then the copings are laid on top. hope this helps. Terry.

How do you stop the herons eating your fish in your pond, do you cover it over in the night ?
Wrighty
Wrighty - 7 years ago
The Nexus are good systems, that's why I based my design on the nexus. Before you spend any money, check out how the nexus works and then check out how my filter systems work that you build yourself at a quarter of the cost. Check out diypondfilters.com Terry.

wow absolutely amazing work there pal loved every video building up to finish any advice were to get some koi for my pond ty
Wrighty
Wrighty - 7 years ago
Hi Jay, Thank you, very much appreciated. Buying koi is a very personal thing. What I mean is, what is a lovely koi to someone might not have the same appeal to someone else. Your best bet is to do a bit of research here on YouTube about what to look for when buying koi. You don't have to travel miles to find good koi either. I got some great fish from my local koi shop that have really come on well. That's a lot of the fun with this hobby when your buying koi for your pond. There are so many places you can buy koi these days, it would be impossible to give one place. Have a good look round locally. You'll be surprised. Thanks, Terry.

Hi Mate. Wow! now that's a good question. I think it's 6mm inside diameter. I got it from my local koi shop. I only run 8 inch air stones so that's all I use. I do use 15mm plastic pipe to run underground to the pond. Terry.

GREAT JOB FOR DOING MOST OF IT YOURSELF BUT, WHY DID YOU LEAVE THE LINER EXPOSED ON THE BOTTOM AND SIDES OF THE POND WITH NO OVERHEAD SHADE PROTECTION FROM THE SUN??? YOU DO REALIZE THAT'S WHY YOUR POND WILL ALWAYS HAVE A GREENISH TINT TO IT. THE ALGAE IS CLINGING TO THE BOTTOM AND SIDES OF THE BLACK POND LINER. IF YOU WOULD HAVE USED PEEBLES ON THE BOTTOM AND BUILT UP ROCKS ALONG THE SIDES WITH SOMETHING OVER TO DAMPANT THE SUNLIGHT FROM HITTING THR POND YOU'D AVOID THE ALGAE AND YOUR POND WOULDN'T HAVE A GREENISH TINT, IT'LL LOOK CRYSTAL CLEAR.
Wrighty
Wrighty - 7 years ago
Hi, I wanted vertical sides to the pond as a precaution against herons. We don't use stone here in the UK to cover the liner as they do in the US. Terry.

Wrighty ok mate sorry for all the questions just trying to learn, am I best getting a bigger pump to the amount of litres I've got ?
Wrighty
Wrighty - 7 years ago
Hi Josh, It drops quite a bit with going through a UV and pond heater plus pulling from the pond, also the bends and pipework. I would say I'm turning over with that 8000 lph pump about 6000 lph. Terry.
Josh Walker
Josh Walker - 7 years ago

Wrighty
Wrighty - 8 years ago
Hi James, I didn't take any of the eggs out this year so the koi would have eaten them. I did take some out last year and grew them. I gave a lot away and kept about 50 for myself, but herron got into the growing tank and got about 30 of them. I still have about 20 left but the herron got all the bigger nice coloured ones. You can see what's left in this video https://youtu.be/dVrVvbA8LuA Thanks, Terry.

Wrighty
Wrighty - 8 years ago
Hi Steve, You need a net with a very fine mesh. Or if you get a length of garden hose and a bucket, If you can get the bucket lower than the pond water level you may be able to syphon them out. Terry.

hi terry I have a question on the uv and pump speed to clarify my water my pond pump is a blagdom 1400 and I also have a TMC proclear ultraviolet uv system 55watts would it be ok to turn the pump on full going fro the uv or would I need to turn the water flow down as these tmc systems can take alot off gallons and do a great job thanks again terry. steve
Wrighty
Wrighty - 8 years ago
Hi Steve, I don't know the recommended through flow of your UV but be careful as to much flow and your UV won't have time to kill the algae. If you get no improvement with your water in a week or so, It might pay to split the flow with a Y connection so your UV gets half the flow. That way you know it will be working. Terry.

Hi, Thank you. Your media is either new or you have too much in the tub. You need a 6 inch (150mm) round air stone on your air line in the middle at the bottom of the tub. I would take some media out a bit at a time until it starts moving. Give it a while and once it is moving well, start adding some of the media you took out back into the tub. Do this slowly over several days. Hope this helps. Terry.

hi terry I was hoping u could help me I have used a treatment to clear all the algea in my pond and it has got rid off off the algea I have a problem my pond water is really green I have turned my uv ultraviolet on 55w and I dont no how long it will take with the pond being 22 thousand liters would u yourself do a full water change now or would it be best to leave it and let the uv do its job I just want to speed things up it is so depressing seing my pond in such a state the reason it has got so bad was I bought a uv system off line (BIGMASTAKE) my pond was really nice last year before I noticed the bulb wasnt doing its job and with me working away it didny hrlp I have come home to a really bad peasoup coulred pond thanks terry I have done a video on the pond in the state it his and will be uploading another video on it when its all back as it should be time to start caring for my pond moore thank you terry steve
Wrighty
Wrighty - 8 years ago
Hi Steve, The fish won't mind the green water, like you say, it just looks horrible. If you want to do a water change I wouldn't change more than 25%. It will be a case of sitting back and waiting for your UV to do it's job. You will need a good filter to clear the dead algae. You really should change the bulb in your UV every year at the start of every season. Once a pond goes like that, it does take some getteing back to normal. Good luck and hope all goes well for you. Terry.

Looks Great Terry! I've been clicking on your channel, 3 times a day every day in anticipation of your next video. Well worth the wait! I'm a firm believer in letting algae grow on the bottom and the sides of the liner, but of course, I want it out of the water column itself. I really like what you did for the skimmer as far as the water height goes, great way to keep the fish out of it. Please keep us updated!
Cheers.

Morning Kev, Thanks m8, appreciated. I did have a day yesterday where I did nothing apart from sit around my pond with a couple of glasses of wine. really relaxing. But it all starts again now as I have trashed the garden while building the pond lol. Trouble is I know nothing about gardening lol. Should be interesting ;) Thanks again, Terry.

Congratulations to the Kois and you on the new pond, Terry. That coping and brick work highlight it really well. Just when you're done with the last batch of fries, along comes another. Hope you have the same luck with this group as the last ones.

Wow, the final product looks great Wrighty. Are you still using the brush for the algae?
Wrighty
Wrighty - 8 years ago
Hi, Thank you. Yes I'm still using the brush to keep the pond clean. I know mine was a new liner, but it will be interesting to see how well it works. I clean my pond with it the day before I'm due to clean my filters, so no extra water loss. Will keep you up dated on that one. Thanks again, Terry

Really nice looking pond, one question for you is did you do something different to your concrete to make it fish safe? I always thought that it put dangerous chemicals in the water or is that not right. Anyway thanks for sharing and I hope you have many great meals with your koa.

Hi Debbie, Thank you. I do put water proofer in the cement when mixing. Must say I've had no problems up to now. Thanks again. Terry.
