I guess theres lots of things to think about. A smaller one probably takes longer to finish the job, so maybe it'll use more gas....? Then you can think of the amount of compression the machine puts down on the soil. The smaller is lighter so it compacts the soil less, yet the big one may be heavy but it divides its weight more? Anyway, you don't really want to create a densely compacted soil.

One of the reasons to use a big machine is that it is HEAVIER. You want good compaction on the keyway and wall. You can loosen any damage it does to other soil, but not getting the wall firm could lead to a blowout, which is major trouble.

I wonder if it would be better to own a small earth mover instead of hiring a giant excavator. Would it save you money and allow you to do more if you just owned a machine of your own?

Eels? We caught some eels with two little fishing lines wrapped around sticks in Terania creek at the back of Zaytuna farm June 2012. Now THAT was a good night!

easy way would have been to trap them,yabbie trap works fine or use what the pros use in the major dams.

I hope you remembered to put a Fine Wire Mesh screen across the bottom of your overflow. Eels will often and surprisingly TRAVEL OVERLAND at night when it has been raining, following the scent of fish urine to another pond. As we unfortunately found out. Very expensive lesson for us. We had to drain the pond and let it dry out to make sure there were no baby eels surviving in mud pockets or water blisters. Took nearly 3 months .
