Small Fish Pond and Cascade by Pondguru

Pondguru

A small fish pond which was built in place of an existing pond. A short cascade was added which is fed by an Oase Filtral 5000 filter. The pond can be about 4" (10cm) higher but it is below fill level to give cement in the top of the wall a chance to fully harden. Yeah, electric fence is probably the way to go. That would be my first suggestion as it tends to be the most effective. Thanks for watching and appreciating the video.

The pond is beautiful! I live in the USA, Northern California , how would you suggest I keep the raccoons from get into a pond. My neighbor has a koi fish pond and has to put a electric fence around his pond so the raccoons don't eat his fish.

As long as the cement is left exposed for 1-2 weeks then pond filled and emptied after a day or so of being full, much of the stuff is just washed out and then it will be fine. If there was going to be a lot of cement exposed (e.g. formal koi pond) the whole of the cement / render would be painted to seal it in.

Hi just came across you channel and just loving the videos. Just one question. When I was building my pond everything I read said not to cement in rocks etc because lime can leach into the water from the cement. You seem to cement everything in with no ill effects. Have I been reading the wrong advise or am I missing something.

Generally run-off from surrounding land wouldn't be a problem but I suppose the occasional pond will get run-off to a small extent.

It would be good but its miles away from my house and not really in my usualk work area however if I get the chance, yes, I will get a video of the lights at night no worries.

I just try to avoid putting one under trees or too close to a house and thats about it really.

How do you pick a good location for a small pond? Sunlight, shade, drainage, all these have to be an issue. Tom in SC

If the pump keeps going its good to prevent freezing but ideally it needs to be moved to just under where the stream pours in to prevent chilling the rest of the pond. I'd always keep the pump running but move it under the stream exit.

The pond is quite deep and can go about 4" deeper. As it is a small pond some of the fish will outgrow it soon (orfe). I don't know if it shows on the video but there are about a dozen goldfish and orfe in there which is too many but they were in the existing pond.

@NeilsNature If the pond has a deeper end then the fish will most likly be there because it's slightly warmer so in places like England there should be a fairly deep area for fish to rest and because it's cold, they won't move as much or need as much oxeygen, this only applies to cold hardy fish like koi (if the pond is at least 1 meter in depth) and goldfish
