Its not everyday you can find a gar like that one, They are extremely rare, that fish is likely around 80 years old.
That is the heaviest gar caught and released from my boat in 5 years and i have spent thousands of hours on the water.
The most important thing is she still swims, that she still can continue her prehistoric bloodline in her river.
It is my hope through landing these fish and treating them with the highest level of respect we can bring about the conservation they deserve and need by showing the world just how ancient, rare and amazing they really are through social media sources like this one.

There hundreds of them u can just see from the road where we live they look to be about 3 to 4 ft long ya this one is rare cause of it's size but alligator gar aren't rare at all in the Arkansas river in the very least but your right we should stop killing the big ones for sport it's needless ,watched a video where all this big game animals / fish were all killed cause of there size pretty much instead of leaving them alone

BCS BBQ mostly only Texans know that these prehistoric creatures are good eating. When they aren't too old of course always respect nature if the fish is older than you do not eat it a good eating size is 3-4 feet anything bigger they've been around too long let them live. However in places here they are a nuisance we are encouraged to kill them because no longer will we see bull reds because of these guys or any other fish at that. At least where I'm at. Catch on fishing buds.

H3ADBANG4LIF3 Actually, I think we are 100% on the same page. I personally love catching "trash" fish. Carp and drum especially. Bowfin are great fighters as well. If somebody really feels the need to shoot something, I'd prefer it be something abundant like carp. Me personally, I'm a catch and release guy. So, totally agree!

I'm halfway on board with you, BirdingWith John. People should only stick to shooting invasive species, if bowfishing even remains legal at all. All "trash" fish are misunderstood. Carp, buffalo, drum, etc. can all be excellent fighters, grow to very large sizes, and can even be excellent table fare. Every fish fulfills a necessary role in the ecosystem, and they all deserve our respect and appreciation.

I was fishing in Bull Shoals Lake in Arkansas in about 1970 & an Aligator Gar rose near our 10ft. John boat. It was was 6 to 7ft long. It was so close to the boat that it scared the crap out of me. I was 14.

I grew up hearing from every fisherman in knew that any gar (long nose, Spotted and Alligator) were all just "trash" fish bent on destroying the game fisheries of Texas. In high school we bow fished allot mainly for carp and buffalo for fun but occasionally gar. The fist time I shot a 4 foot gator gar, was the last time. I grew to like and respect these fish and learning that they had a place in the Texas fisheries food chain like any other native species. In fact, in Texas they are the only predator fish (other than Giant Flatheads) big enough to take full sized invasive carp which can devastate native habitat preferable to native game fish. SO in essence, they HELP the native fish populations by thinning the carp populations. But in truth, they are just friggen cool; too cool to randomly slaughter for fun. Much respect for the catch and release. There's currently legislation in Texas set to protect Alligator Gar from over harvest. I hope folks support it.

Holy smokes! That is an amazing catch! I can respect your desire to catch and release with something that big. Older the animal the meat isn't as good rather harvest her offspring. Can't believe a fella could bowfish one and let it rot. I always use my fish i bowfish either for food for myself or bait. I would love to bowfish an alligator gar we have smaller gar in IA that are pretty good, but noting that gigantic! Honestly be hard to let a fish that big rot on the bank glad you were able to enjoy the experience!

When I was kayak fishing in Louisiana a few years ago there were 6 footers rolling in the water next to me, this one makes those look small! The girth of that fish is incredible. And no, I wasn't fishing for the gar I was trying to catch redfish and trout I live in Chicago and I didn't even realize there were gars in those brackish bayous. First one that spooked when I drifted over it scared the crap out of me, I thought it was an alligator until I saw it was silver. Then I figured it out... but man that bayou was full of them they were rolling everywhere maybe they were spawning?

I love what you said about the conservation of Gar. I have fished them before and always felt sick when someone kills large Gar.
What do you do with a dead Gar? You cant really eat them. I mean some people do, but they aren't very good. If you intend to eat Gar you don't destroy a giant. The giants are the gar with the good genes and should be the ones left to spawn. We need to stop destroying everything nature creates. What would our rivers be without gar...a river full of Asian Carp.
