That was a giant isopod which DO NOT come on land they are a deep water crustacean and the only isopod you would ever find on land is a rolly polly/ pill bug or a wood lice the animal you released will most likely die since that lake is not deep enough and is not salt water

they do survive in shallow waters between 22 and 280 meters in depth so

I live near here. My theory is they come into hooters with their crabs occasionally and they dump them by the canal when they turn up in the shipment.

Seems odd for someone to go fishing and dump them there that often. More likely it turns up in crab traps occasionally and they move with the shipment.

considering that Wikipedia's Giant isopod article has a couple of pictures of them out of water (apparently alive), I would imagine that they can live some time out of water. They're related to crab and lobsters (being crustaceans), which are also known to be able to survive outside of water (for extended periods of time). A giant isopod probably couldn't function very well out of water (being used to having water help support its weight), but they might be able to avoid the quick suffocation that most fish would experience
