Most have no issue keeping multiple small yet slow growing reef fish yet for some reason keeping one fast growing sustainable swordfish is not ok. Just peoples perceptions really. We have no problem with keeping fish to eat. We also release many fish.

Thanks. I remove the long line clip off them and slide the wind on leader directly through the swivel. Then I rubber band the light at the fight that I want. That way you just wind through the light, the rubber bands break and the light slides down to the swivel.

I used to commercial fish in The Gulf of Mexico off west coast of Florida. I fished in over 150 fathoms and always dreamed of catching such a beast! I was on a long line vessel which was nice to be on the ocean but definitely full time grunt work. Congrats on catching Moby Dick! ;)

looking at all the bruises and cuts on the skin of the fish, I cant stop imagining the speed and force it must have been crashing against rocks, in the sea bottom, trying to get itself loose from the hook. Poor thing, must have been so intense as the fish was dead when it reached the boat.

Surely the flavour of the meat can't be so great after all that suffering.

Thanks for the responsive info about your region. Can any be returned sucessfully though They seem the type of game fish to fight to their very last. Hate to loose one to shark or suffocation or heart failour. They are an awesome beast! Only we, as curators of out planet can know if a species is abundant or not.

do those fish way down the food chain realise they are "common"? Swords are in our region are in good numbers and suffer very little fishing pressure. We are well aware of mercury etc in swordfish. it would have to be consumed for nearly every meal for a sustained amount of time to have any impact. They are also quite fast growing in comparison to many of the reef fish that many people seem to have no issues with keeping. This one was in no condition to release and to do so would have been irresponsible and a waste of top quality meat that fed many people and meant we didn't have to buy as much meat from the supermarket or buy fish from a commercial fishing operation that we couldn't be sure is sustainable.

If the creature lives in sustainable numbers I agree One taken on occasion and humanely dispached is cool. One can even make a bit of a life honouring ermony of it to give the experience more meaning....if u get my drift.
But also these apex predators store accumalations of toxins heavy metals in their tissues which can lead to big health issues.
I myself love partaking of the seas bounty in the manner stated above but only eat critters that are common and way down the food chain...

BigFishChannel they aren't all like that, but some of these guys fishing the gulf I think spent money just to do it.

About 2 years ago I pointed out to a friend who regularly goes out with a boat and deep drops the weights he was paying 50$ + dollars for where tractor draw bar pins , cut down, and plastic dipped. He thought I was full of it till I turned up with one I had built for about 10$ out of a pin I found at a flea market..... to say he was not amused was an understatement!

+s2561828 It’s just what’s worked for us. We’re still trying different things. Ideally we would like to use only circles but haven’t had great success with them so far. I know a few other guys claim pretty high hook up rates on circles though.

+Magnum Scuro No. that’s a three hour fight edited into 5 mins. We normally have it on in the initial stages and when it’s near the boat so the boat driver can hear when the fish is running.

think there's a chance that the bridge of the reel could've cut the line on the first fish? RJ Boyle did a video showing how sharp the inside of some of the bridges can be. some reels were sharp some were not. sharp ones cut 100lb braid instantly.

+Heavy D mercury is toxic no matter where. Its a metal its not venom when you heat it enough it becomes non toxic. Mercurary is a liquid metal it will stay there. But its a small amount

Brian lmao you know some mercury in fish isn’t the same deadly mercury in for example lightbulbs... and besides the non harmful mercury in the fish is destroyed when you cook it so unless your gonna eat it raw and inject the mercury from a lightbulb you are fine to eat it

Just because a Fisherman fish doesn't mean he's a catch and release sportsman, I fish all the time. I fish for fish to enjoy at home and eat, not temporary entertainment. Fishing is a sport, there are two types of fishing sport, catch and release, or catch and keep. If you fish then your a sportsman, there is no, REAL sportsman. You do your version, we do ours. Stop being a fishing politician, youre like the liberal version of a fisherman, YOU MUST RELEASE IT OR YOURE NOT A REAL SPORTSMAN! Republican version of a Fisherman, I'll do what ever I feel like doing with my catch, as long as it's legal. (Nothing to do with the actual political titles, just a means of example) oh, A REAL SPORTSMAN WOULD HAVE RELEASED IT! ..... GOOD for you, no body cares.

Brian in addition to mercury they also have a high level of tastiness. Now I do not recommend consuming large amounts of mercury but when eaten in a nice meal and not pounds at a time there are no downsides to your health.

a number of reasons.
They taste awesome and supplied us and friends with delicious meat for a number of meals.
which meant we didn't have to go out and buy meat and fish from the supermarket where we can't be sure the animals are treated ethically and respected like this one was.

It was the anglers choice to take his first swordfish. a fish we had spent 4 years and literally 10's of thousands of dollars chasing.

And.. It would not have been right to release a fish that came up suffering barotrauma and hooked in the stomach. it would not have survived anyway.
