Commons only really eat algae when they are young when they get older they will look to your koi and start to eat their slime coats instead of the algae

Hey when the pond is clean you may want to thin out the herd of tar fish. If they can't ind algae they may start sucking on the side of the koi. Had it happen in one of my aquariums when I was younger.
