OK these ignorant people need to understand that raw fish can only be eaten if they were frozen for more than 24 hours under -35 F. or -4 F under 7 days. The coldness actually kills bacteria, the same goes when you heat and cook it.

raw fish is safe to eat, but only if you freeze it for at least 12 hours first. You MIGHT be able to have purely raw fish if it's farm raised and guarunteed to be free of illness and parasites. anything else could easily contain bacteria and/or worms that could infect and/or infest just about any part of the human body.

when I was in high school, my bud bought a live crawfish lobster thing from a grocery market. Used it to walk around the store and scare people on camera. there is a difference in sushi and regular fish that has to be cooke sushi is a sushi grade fish that has been flash freezes to kill the bacteria and fish that isn't sushi grade needs to be cooked because it hasn't been flash freezes

I'm a sushi chef here in california between sf and sacramento. and we get our fish from suppliers that have sushi grade fish. we don't clean it, we cut it and serve it. it's not cooked before hand and the only cleaning it goes through is some water. that's it. you can't go down to your local super market and buy true good sushi grade fish. there is a big difference on where you get the fish from. it has nothing to do with cleaning. also yes it's call sashimi. that's cuts of raw fish. nigiri is raw fish over rice with a little smudge of real Wasabi. not fake wasabi/horseradish. sometime during the year (I'm not gonna get specific) the fish don't eat (mostly salmon) so you have to kill all the bacteria that the fish isn't killing because it isn't eating. so you have to salt it for an hour then wash the salt off. you also do this with wild salmon, always. because it isn't farmed. most and always big sushi restaurants always use farmed fish, they never buy wild because it's rare and expensive. so they buy farmed because it's cheaper and consistent with grade. except for some certain oysters sometimes. they are shipped from Japan most of the time.

It depends on what kind of sushi you are having.If it has smoked salmon and cooked shrimp then yes,but any raw salmon in sushi is not cooked.These guys probably have gotten tons of parasites in their bodies right now.Unless you live somewhere that has freezing cold water that kills most of the parasites.the longer the fish is frozen the better it is.

+cutie cate Actually it's more about the origin of the fish (wild vs farmed) and how it is treated in its processing and transport. Sushi grade (edible raw) fish has to be handled a certain way. It's not processed in any way other than filleting and possibly flash freezing. Freezing does kill certain parasites because the temperature that they use for flash freezing and commercial freezing far exceeds the capabilities of a home freezer.

+Max Daley Okay so i fish every weekend and both of you guys arent completly right.. you CANT eat salt or fresh water fish raw. They have worms in there skin and they will get into your intestines and fuck you up, next time you catch a fish from anywhere salt water or fresh water hold the fillet up to the light and you will see at least 1 worm, they live in fish skin

sushi is actually rice with raw or cooked fish. Sashimi is raw thinly cut slices of fish.
You can eat raw tuna straight off the hook. Ive done it. 200 generations before us have done it.
