Its a american eel and the reason the like going under rocks and grass is because they like the darkness they come out more during the night and you can use uncooked meat to lure them and if its dark they are curious of the light so also shine a flashlight on the water and your more like to catch them and if your trying to cath them on a fishing pole you cant reel in cast out constantly you have to leave the pole sitting in the water, when you see them first bite you have to wait a minute or two before you hook them because you will yank it outta therd mouth..

I believe that’s a swamp eel which is a species that originated from northern Asia that competes with native species for food and territory making invasive to the US. But even though they may look harmless Eels can bite, sting with pain similar to an electric shock or can even cause paralysis and death depending on which species so in the future please be careful when handling a species of eel or even fish that you do not know anything about.
