I'm a little confused. The heat source is needed for the Koy right? I assume it's colder then it looks where you guys are now. I have never heated Koy outdoors or indoors. I'm in northern Canada. They come in for fall and go out late spring.

I know you are doing what you can, but that fish doesn't just need a good place to heal. The bone sticking out will need to be removed so it doesn't get infected and spread to the rest of the bones. You will also need to find something to treat the current infection with.

Constructing a DYI biofilter is easy peezy,just use a 55 g plastic garbage can and put holes in the bottom and then get a bag of lava rock,rinse it good and put it in the can,then get pond pads for mechanical filtration,plumb it up with pumps and hoses and your all set to go!

I breed koi and cat fish and some small native fish and they do not require heat it's is acutely bad for the body's to not go through season temp change and as far as healing "her" Isolation in a 100 gal tank or bigger with a small amount of iodine mixed with water

Kois have no problem with cold water. I live in germany and our kois are outside the whole year. During the winter they just hybernate under the ice of the pond. The Pond just has to be deep enaugh.

Awe, that poor baby and he's so pretty too...I recently had this problem with my black Moore, it was another goldfish tearing his tail though. I separated my moore kept him connected to the system tho, and treated him with anti-fungals and whatnot. He has since healed and has been re-added to the tank and is doing well but I will continue to keep an eye out for and further attacks

koi can live in the most bad water conditions and be fine and as for heat you live in florida koi carp survive the winter in the UK and the ponds freeze over i don't see the issue ? And as for the red tail cats if you're catching huge ones(probs like 2 years old" in your local ponds then isn't that clear proof that they're surviving florida winters ?

Koi in cold water not a issue, That redtail needs moving to a heated place. The Koi I'd say is a vet job, the top part of the tail and the exposed bone need removing. I can see it just turning into a abscess, and the koi dying of blood poisoning.

Koi are fine in cool water, they are in the carp fam and do great in that type of water. The red tail definitely needs warm water bud. He is a tropical fish so that is obvious. All u guys need to do is provide clean water, good filtration and some water softner salt. The salt will have him create more slime coat, clean off any infection and bacteria since they cannot survive any sort of salinity. I can leaf u guyz towards an amazing pond place in davie, koi international. He's great with fish and u guyz will get a kick out of his setup, koi heaven! He can teach u all kinds of koi fundamentals!
