I show you what woods work, from the spindle of mullein to soft woods for the hearth board (cottonwood, aspen, poplar, spruce and cedar). Cattail stalks are an alternative, but it is quite fragile and I do not recommend it. I'll show you how to identify mullein weed and where to find it around old infill city lots and train tracks. I feel like such a moron, watched this 7 months ago & grew a mullien in the yard. Made a killer spindle & couldn't figure out why I was drilling though the board in 30 seconds to a minute. I was like "man I'm a total savage my awesome strength is just drilling right through this puppy. After re watching this I had made the serious mistake of using the base of the mullien as the hearth board so it just went right through it pronto. You are the king going to give it another shot next time I go out, cheers for all the videos I don't comment much because I don't like come off as youtube spam but your legit man, thanks again.

Great video mate. Thanks for this - I'm really going to try a hand drill now! When I get a trout here in the UK, I usually just pull the top of the spine away from the meat and they usually separate really easy all the way down without the need for using the knife or sometime when I cook it with the spine/bones still on it usually separates on it's own. Going to watch more of your videos... take care dude!

Glad to see you not reading raw fish. LOL I started a fire yesterday using a cotton ball and some Vaseline and dry grass. Worked like a charm with my little flint striker. Thank you for the advise.

no, absolutely not, it isn't nearly as rewarding if you make your first hand drill fire by cheating yourself by pre drying your materials in a modern day oven. That is cheating and you will all know it when you finally attempt to do it from scratch. You need to learn to pick your materials wisely, there is no oven in the woods unless you make one in which case you already made a fire by one means or the other. I had no personal hands-on survival expert ever teach me anything, I learned mostly by trial and error. I read up on it, went out in the field and practiced it, practiced it until my hands were bloody several times over for many years. I finally succeeded with amour honey suckle shoot as my spindle and a hearth board that was of an unknown wood that passed the finger nail test. It wasn't easy, but it was one of the most rewarding things I have ever done on my own. Watch these friction fire videos, learn from them, save your failure sets and learn from those as well. When you finally get it you will be like tom hanks in the movie cast away, " fiiiire, me create fiiiire, fire. fire" lol Do not buy wood from the lumber yard because that teaches you nothing but to be reliant on lumberyards. Do not bake your wood because that teaches you nothing as well. get out there in the field and learn it the right way and you will know what will and will not work. What happens when you are in a real survival situation and need fire but you don't have an oven to pre bake your fire starting material? hahahaha you freeze, starve, and don't know what to do. Do it right, and let me tell you, not everyone will get an eff'n ribbon. Its that first fire that you can build from, you can make dry materials, you can make char cloth, you can build off of a embers of a previous fire, but making that initial fire is where the most rewarding thing comes from. Cheat and you cheat yourself that first fire. You wont know you can walk into the woods and make it happen if you rely on a cheat.

WB....In case my PM the other day didn't go through (I've been having lots of problems with them recently).....I did a bow drill fire video (Titled "My Struggle"...don't want to drop the link here unless you feel like having it). I was in large part inspired by your video here to buckle down and pull it off. At first I thought that the challenge was hand drill only. That's net on my list! On the lookout for some mullein for materials.

I played for a long time with the idea of going outside again like in my childhood days. We used to build dams or Little huts with Wood we found or make bows and such. While i was in the Military, I'm from Switzerland btw, i started watching Videos of the Channel Primitive Technology and started to get inspired again. Then I stumbled over your Channel which really gave me the final Motivation that I needed to go outside again. In the last few years I often only stayed inside watched movies, played Video games, went to parties with freinds, etc.. But recently i started to enjoy going for walks at night again or maybe just going outside at night to enjoy the sight of our beautiful universe. But there was always a feeling inside of me that told me subconsiously that I wasn't happy about how I'm living my live right now. What really gave me the kick and the urge to go outside into the Woods or moutains again was, when, while I was in the Military, I went away from our camp in to the nearby forest and went for a little walk up the mountain. I then sat down on a stump and rolled me a One (Joint). I smoked it and just stared at the nightsky and reflected back on my live*. This was when i realised that i wanted to go outside again into woods like in the "good old days" as we say. Thank you Chris for giving me the final kick and for you tutorials that teach me "Survival" skills. You may not realise it but you're motivating tons of people to go outside again and enjoy nature. I hope that i will get the sense of achivment again when I do little things like starting a fire without a lighter, etc.. Thank you very much Chris :).

*PS: That doesn't me you need to drugs to improve or change your live, it has to come from deep down, you have to be convinced yourself that you want to do something. It's your life live it the way YOU want not how others want you to live it. I made experiences in this regard but that's a Story for another day.

Hey Chris, I love your channel, and have for a long time.

Pre-preparing primitive fire-making stuff is a very rare thing to do. I've done the hand drill technique in various environments, and in most cases, it's a PITY (Pain In The A$$). As long as it's not a drenched environment, it's doable, given the right available materials. When everything is soaked, might as well cuddle up next to a brown bear and call it a day. Grrrr. =)

Great video and even better inspiration. Look around and for the last 30 odd years all we've seen on tv and read is just how awful we males are. Ours is the only sex that can get crapped on by the Hollywood and political elites and don't even mention the education system. This has all been planned to dehumanize and de-nut men by feminist even those feminist with a schlong between their legs.

Wow that really hurt WB, only proud of the men, granted there are not as many women into survival or bush crafting, but, there are some out there that that are, and because of these videos more are becoming interested because it’s in their blood like it’s in mine, I am 57 years old enjoy the outdoors, I have learned from you, Bob Hansler (and wish I could restore his sight) he’s awesome! And two others, I’m picky on those I subscribe to, don’t like a lot of yakking, I want to learn. As for u acknowledging men only, they r becoming less, but I also believe vids u an others do r getting more guys out there AS well as women, as for watching ur vids, we r not as many as the guys, though few we r, we r here watching and learning and I do not see the difference be it male or female learning these skills. These skills do not make men, now days, finding a true man/woman, is finding a needle (not a haystack) but a thousand. Even though u threw the few of us aside, I’ll not unsubscribe. Have a good day wb

Hi from Australia, I have some questions:
1. Do you know the botanical name for that weed plan for the drill? I would like to try grow some here so I can give this a go.
2. Have you ever tried putting elastoplast (sports) tape over the friction areas of your hands to try and combat the hot spots? Maybe it could help with grip too?
3. Any more info on the properties of the hearth board? I am trying to think what might be available in my country, all most all woods here are either very hard woods or very resinous ones.

Thanks for another great video.

Find a soft wood for your base for sure. Dry it if need be. I think the tape would for sure help. I only really get one hot spot area... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verbascum

What a super enjoyable energy you have in this one! This is really an awesome video! Best Tutor Ever!

Also, I'll go hunting for some better materials than I found the last time. I only made my hand drill set work, by applying my powered screwdriver (nice way to test that it's at least somewhat possible)...
Without wanting to do anything myself, I really hope for your success with all these videos (yeah, sorry for being so direct).
Now, I hope to have a video to show whenever time with allow me to toy around with this some more! :)

Best regards from Denmark!

I also have epilepsy and diabetes (mainly genetic as opposed to overeating wrong foods/lack of exercise) Your videos help to motivate me, I had spent the last few years recovering and I am still in a very high amount of pain. Yet, I make a way to go fishing again, even grilling said fish by the pond, except for the two I smoked. It's mainly bass down here, but not only bass. Reconnecting with nature is akin to reconnecting with my ancestors. Thank you for supporting a return to the skills we once possessed. Adapt, evolve, overcome.

Thanks for the encouragement, if this is my "cross to bare", then bare it I shall, and keep right on going until the end. In humans, weakness isn't being deeply injured, it is quitting because of it, we can still overcome and thrive. I watch the Paralympics and the Special Olympics, whatever disadvantages we have do not preclude us from greatness. Deceased US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR, is a prime example, helped win a war while his body failed him, same for Stephen Hawking. We can let our difficulties define us, or we can call our scars survivor marks, and keep on going. I chose to keep going.
The Wooded Beardsman
The Wooded Beardsman - 6 years ago

I had my dad time me and a buddy shooting an assault course with 1911 .45 pistols. George weighed about 300 lbs, and got thru the course in 27 seconds. My dad said 'Boy, I'd hate to see that coming at me". So I ran it in 17 seconds and dad said 'boy, do you have to stop to hit those targets? can't you hit them on the fly"? And I said. "Daddy, I just ran it 40% faster than what really impressed you!" Hell, if i'd finished before I started, he''d have had some sort of criticism about all the hits were not centered on the head, or some such.

Martin Yoo
Martin Yoo - 6 years ago
aziz Sadat there’s nothing wrong with sucking up or following directions. If you don’t like the lifestyle that office life forces, you should probably get out there and start your own business or become your own boss. Maybe that will help. Theres no reason to downplay city people and shame them for being “industrial slaves.” I know so many office workers that have risen through their job through hard work and tenacity. Some have quit and become their own bosses. its all up to you man, youre not enslaved by anyone or anything
aziz Sadat
aziz Sadat - 6 years ago
But in Office Life you just have to be good at sucking up and following directions, its not that hard to do...I mean all my schooling, degrees/certificates, promotions, I have gotten was just because I followed directions, did what they told me, and show up on time when the job that owns you asks. It's like being a kid in school again but as a grown up and your livelihood depends on it which is not something I am proud of.
Martin Yoo
Martin Yoo - 6 years ago
aziz Sadat its true your average office worker wouldn’t last two nights in the wilderness but that really doesn’t make you any less of a man haha. thats analogous to saying you don’t have the mental capacity to grind through office life and succeed into a higher position. Food for thought
aziz Sadat
aziz Sadat - 6 years ago
I work in an office cubicle with a lot of other people, I have taken some of my coworkers on outings with me and they usually want to leave and go back home before the first morning even comes. I am not saying you can't be a man working in a office job but from what I have seen the majority would not survive if they were just dropped into nature "the real world". Most men where I live still play pokemon on their phones during lunch break it's pretty sad.

Curious why most Friction Fire practitioners don't avail themselves of CEs aka coal extenders??
Give me an ember the size of a dry grain of rice and I will give you flames every time. The key to that is having good CEs on hand. Such as char, char mixes, punkwood, most fungi, etc. Also fluff from cattails, thistles, Sycamore or milkweed. Hundreds of charred and uncharred options.

Once we have built that ember up into a nice sized coal, not a bad idea to then split it in half. One is brought, or attempted to be brought, to flame. The other sits to the side still smoldering in plenty of CE, just in case the first fails.

Dunno. Seems so obvious to me. Been using CEs since the late 1980s. Very rarely see anyone else using CEs. Oh well.

I "cheat" with the handrill. Thumb loops, gloves or shoes on my hands, etc. Plenty of blisters first learning it, so now it's any trick that saves my hands is a good trick. lol!

Anyhow. Very nice vid! You kept it interesting and moved at a good pace, yet also covered enough information. Like how you challenged us to join you. Love how you build up the men around you. These days that's too rare, indeed. Big time kudos! Thanks man.

Curious too how making fire lays has gone out of vogue. In the 1970s we were taught to do all the prep first. Then build a fire lay. Then go for flame. Finally adding the flame to the fire lay. At that point, all we should need to do is sit back and watch.

Do to the fact that I can`t upload videos anymore, I can try and video my efforts. For the record, the best expedient tinder for new guys is rotted hard wood, mainly fruit wood like cherry or apple wood. As long as it is very dry, it will take and hold a spark. In the Scouts years ago, it was called punk wood. I am not proud. I am a humble, well armed Christian homesteader. I have surrendered my proud stoney heart to Christ. I do have a head of flint, though, but a soft heart for the American people. Canadians too, as my dad`s folks came from France and colonized the Canadian wilderness as trappers and traders. And, yep, I love crullers, eh!

Another easy option is making the John-Rudiger Roll system. Using a 2x2 pine board, cut 2 lengths of 8 inches. Dado out (chisel out) the center length 1 1/4 inch wide x 1 inch deep for each board. This makes a square "U" shape. Drill small holes along the side of the board (like a cribbage board hole), and put small rudiger balls inside. Make small wood/mullein (etc) dowels for the hole plugs. If you want, you can superglue emory sanding strips onto the back sides (for sharpening up your knives and tools, but also friction for holding the boards). They fit together and you have excellent grip and control of the rudiger method for starting a very quick ember from tinder sources. Just pull out a rudiger ball, place into the trough of the upside U board, place the other overturned board into the slot, and rub and roll until you get an ember.

Although I do love your videos and respect your opinions, I disagree that if you do not partake in outdoor activities that you are "not a man". I think being a man means providing for yourself and your family to live comfortably and ensure good health. Working in the city making 6 figure salary to provide for my family does not make me any less of a man. To express my point a little further, living in the city means I have extremely limited access to most aspects of nature, and therefore I must step-up as a man and find another way to provide for my family.

That being said, I grew up on a farm raising and eating my own animals and have fished for my entire life, so I am not trying to be defensive in my opinion, I just do not think its fair to say "you are not a man unless you do X".

If I misunderstood your point or you would like to explain your reasoning behind it a little more in-depth I would love to hear about it.

Keep up the good work and looking forward to your next video!
The Wooded Beardsman
The Wooded Beardsman - 6 years ago
I agree with what you said. Being a man is not definable except that a man follows his own path and takes responsibility for himself and others...how he does that is completely up to him.

I like the fish vids. I'm planning on taking a scout survival course next April in the Ozarks where you live off fish and foraging for a week and move and make a shelter every day. I was thinking of using a yotito Cuban hand fishing reel for my fishing kit and practicing with it this year to get confident in fishing and such and the fish vids are helpful. What kind of shelter would you go with if you had to keep moving and building new ones every day would it be a lean to or another type?
mharm734
mharm734 - 6 years ago
Tent is good for a safe friendly environment but I think you're at risk of being ambushed while in a tent because of low visibility if you're packing it for a bug out scenario that might have hostiles whereas in a tarp you would usually have pretty good visibility and hideability I think. The course doesn't let you have tents or tarps though just paracord, a knife and saw pretty much.

Near as we can figure they were using the Bow Drill for putting holes in stone, bone and wood first. Then accidentally discovered they could start fires. Likely the Hand Drill was discovered later.

No proof whether Percussion Fire Ignition (Flint & Steel) or Friction Fore came first. F&S was relied upon by more people groups for longer. Maintaining embers from existing fires is actually the oldest and most used method for starting fires. Many means by which to carry embers around.

I believe It always comes down to if you have the materials to make a string for a bow drill, if nothing for a string you'd have to do hand drill.
What materials could you use to make a primitive string, hide? guts? hair? tree bark? I think that would be an interesting challenge to see what you could find to make a primitive string from?

I`ve seen those plants around here, I`ll be keeping an eye out now. I want to try making a friction fire, if not by hand by bow. Thank You for sharing your video, and bringing us along. ATB

Well you'll probably get more nourishment and nutrition in protein and such. If you are going to cook it. You'd probably be better off to boil it whole. After you got it and clean it. Leaving the skin on the course. That way you'd have the fish to eat. And you're still saving the nutrition that is pulled out of the fish. In the Bronx that you can drink. This way of cooking it will still give you your maximum amount of nutrition plus something to drink with a little flavor

I filmed this before I left for Texas. Our snow is gone now in the South of Ontario, probably still some in the North though!

i caught 5 beaver earlier this spring and butchered them all. I took one with me on our yearly turkey/camping trip and cooked it up. Like you and your boy said, it is very good and sweet meat. it definitely has a distinct smell to it, but it's not over powering. thanks for the great videos and keep up the good work.

Why are we humans so vulnerable to raw meat against the rest of animals? Is it because we evolved with fire?
The Wooded Beardsman
The Wooded Beardsman - 6 years ago
It's because animals have no other choice but to deal with the consequences :)

I’ve never done this so is the spindle supposed to be harder or softer than the hearth board?
The Wooded Beardsman
The Wooded Beardsman - 6 years ago
Both mostly soft. The spindle is softer though.

I'm not sure it would work well since mullein is typically quite slippery I find, so the cordage would be unlikely to bind to the stalk and spin....

Raw Fish is always better. Taste better tooo.

also if you feel like your hands are getting warm and feel like you might get some blisters. try lightly clapping your hands. Dont know why it works. but at least for me it works. i went to a survival camp trip for a week out in North Dakota. Person running it said to clap your hands lightly to prevent blisters if you chop wood, use drill, or climbing and some other things

Chakat Nightsparkle only few raw fish is better
Nicholas Byrd
Nicholas Byrd - 6 years ago
To many, cooked is better. In the US, fish tend to have so many worms and other parasites that cooking is a must to avoid infecting yourself. Blisters are bad, but calluses in the right places are a good thing, prevents friction burn and the subsequent pain. The same way you play guitar until your fingertips form calluses. (No pick for me, not even on an electric, loses the tactile feel.) I'm proud to be a freak who likes his fish cooked. I will happily eat sashimi and sushi that has raw fish, because those have been inspected and certified.
