Airborne thank you for video. I am going to try this weekend. I have a 2 year old Rottweiler. Beautiful coat and I have been feeding him Orijen (regional red) dog food. Have you ever heard of it? If so what do you think about it? My dog looks beautiful, but I would like to add some raw food into his diet in ways such as this video.

Few things more satisfying than to hear a dog grind away at a meaty bone or a piece of fish like this.

This may be a dumb question but if you caught a fish could you give it straight to the dog out of the water ? And if you catch them can you freeze them and give it to the dog just like that? And also is food in grocery stores good to feed to them as long as you freeze it first?
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
You could give it straight from the water, but I recommend freezing it 3 days 1st to kill any potential parasites in them. Yes, you can feed them frozen. Grocery store bought meat is fine. :-)

I raw feed my two dogs, pork, deer, chicken, beef meat, bones and organs and fish...however, I buy the fish wild, prepackaged, cleaned and frozen. I just saw a local fisherman post that he had raw mullet for sale but I don't want to clean it. Clearly you didn't. Did I see you'd scaled the fish? The fins aren't dangerous? Do you gut the fish or can I give it to them in its entirety?
love me some kitties and pups!
love me some kitties and pups! - 6 years ago
Thank you for your reply. Two more questions...how often do you feed them just fish? Do they eat anything else when they're eating the full fish or is that enough for a complete meal?
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
I don't scale them or cut off fins except the spines on catfish. You can feed them with guts. They should be frozen 3 days to kill any potential parasites in them. Salmon and trout should be frozen 7 says.

Another thing I want to point out is, if you feed your dogs raw make sure you have a vet that does not mind other wise they will discourage it. I have switched them once I got mine.
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
You are required by law here to have a rabies shot here. I agree though, too many vaccines are given to puppies in too short a time period.
Kamalu0nalani
Kamalu0nalani - 6 years ago
I've had to switch vets til I found one that did not mine and knew about raw food diet. I also avoid all the unneeded shots. This leads to a much healthier pup. Too many unneeded vaccines leads to too many issues later.

1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
Yes, just parasites. RAW food bacteria isn't a issues for canines. They have stronger digestive juices and a shorter G track them humans making them much better able to handle them than we can. In fact 18% of dogs carry salmonella as a natural part of their gut flora. :-)

My grandmother raised German sheps back in the 50s and 60s on a farm. Those dogs always received raw meat from butchered hogs, sheep, cattle, bones/hooves, and raw milk from the dairy cattle. Dogs would catch fish from the creek and eat them. If they wanted veggies they would dig up her garden. She said she would get so mad at them but just dealt with it. Loved her sheps dearly. Never had a skinny dog and she said their coats were awesome.

Last thing you wanna do is giving them fish. The little fish bone will poke their guts out...
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
No, it won't. RAW fish is 100% fine. My dogs are living proof. British Colombian wolves who live along the coast live off of RAW fish the scavenge from the beaches and so do bears, Dingo and fox. RAW fish bones are very soft and pliant. It is COOKED bones that are dangerous. Use your common sense Ekin. We are not finding dead wildlife full of guts perforated by fish bones... lol. :-)

Just stumbled across your raw meet video and loved it but I have a question... Why care so much for the dogs and then feed them Tilapia? I heard so much bad stuff about it, and see that a lot of humans don't even want to each that junk so why should a dog? It's not bad for them?

Love the pups

I've gone through your videos the question is why do you always keep quoting the penal code and if so what state do you live in that you have to have a kennel and a dog house and another thing I hate to see when your dogs take a shit when all that raw meat comes out of them keep up the good work brother I have a 2 year old German Shepherd beautiful red and black German Shepherd short hair and I feed Herbert's Wort dog food look it up it's the gentleman who played Robin in Batman and Robin he lives in Corona California and runs a sanctuary out there full of dogs he's a great person to talk to I've never heard of your method in regards of feeding dogs raw meat not saying that it's not good I'm just saying I want to look into it more thoroughly I give my dog's dry and wet 3 times a day and they do a lot of walking she's more trained on the working side protection Etc

I provide all kinds of links if you want to resource more. I repeat the law regarding that to keep from having to write it hundreds of times in the comments to everyone who asks if they live outside in the kennels. Much easier to repeat quickly in the video then to type it out multiple times in the comments.

With all due respect I would like to give you a quick FYI, @ 5:40 you indicated that salmonella is part of the the normal fauna of the dogs intestinal tract, however the proper term that should be used is flora, where flora is plant based and fauna is animal based.
Even though I'm a specialist blood banker in trauma and transplant medicine, I did work in microbiology for a while before transferring to my current job in blood banking, where findings of normal flora or intestinal tract flora was reported along with colony counts of other microorganisms I.E. KLEBSIELLA OR ENTEROCOCCUS.
By the way really enjoying your videos and appreciate the quality info. Keep up the good work.

However I don't judge and I'm certain they love it.

NEVER feed your pet (or a human) Tilapia.... you might as well be stuffing toxins & poisons down their throats!
There are lots of good healthy fish-types you can feed your pet or human.... but don't ever feed them Tilapia... and keep farmed-salmon to a minimum.
Healthy alternatives include wild-caught salmon, cod, pollock, yellow or blue tuna (not the large types), mahi, halibut, opah, trout, bass, red snapper, etc.

He really didnt want that fish. He moved away because he didnt wan the fish to be taken away, when you followed you put him in a situation where he could either give it away or eat it. Dogs dont naturally give aeay food and are more likely to make themselves sick tjan give something away.

so maybe you know and trust the source of your fish, and you may even touch on it in the videos. i have only watched one video previously of the same dog eating some raw poultry and i watched the whole thing. but i do know i watched a video here on youtube just earlier today of a fish they were cutting up to prepare at some restaurant and it turned out to have a bunch of small tapeworms inside of it. Just some food for thought, but keep making the videos man, not hating, just thought i'd share that if you weren't already aware of the possibilities of parasites. i don't currently have time to watch this one as it's 3am and i've got to go to sleep but I saw it come up on my front page and i figured i needed to leave this comment. best of luck to you, and thanks for reading.

I say it in all my RAW videos... you must freeze RAW food for a certain number of days based on the type of meat to kill any potential parasites in it. Most fish should be frozen solid 3 days and salmon and trout a minimum of 7 days. Beef and poultry 3 days and wild game and pork 3 weeks. :-)

If you're following a BARF diet, then why are you feeding them fish?
Would canines eat fish in the wild naturally?
Lastly, if they would do so, then why would it have to be frozen?
Surely freezing fish multiple days before consumption isn't "biologically appropriate" for canines.
Just trying to challenge you and get a better understanding of the diet as a whole, thanks.
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
Yes, canines eat fish in the wild. It is the primary food source for the British Colombian wolves living along the coast and coastal islands. They live off the fish they scavenge that washes up on the shores. As stated in the video...The food is frozen to kill any potential parasites. Canines in the winter are constantly scavenging frozen raw carcasses. Canines are opportunistic scavengers. So your 'SURELY' statements are incorrect. Any other stones you want to cast? Had you listened better to this video and bothered to look at the BARF links I provided all these questions were answered there... :-)

No, freezing it solid for several days to several weeks depending on the type of meat kills all parasites. Its easy enough to look up if you doubt me. You maybe be confusing parasites with bacteria. Freezing does not kill bacteria, but DOES kill parasites. :-)

I don't know why humans think that feeding unatural foods to animals is healthy, they have evolved for millions of years to eat this kind of food, you never see wild dogs and wolves with the kinds of ailments that our pets get.

This applies to humans as well, our diets are so far beyond what we ate hundreds of thousands of years ago, and then we sit here and wonder why we are so obese and unhealthy.

I suspect it was the amount of fish he ate (10) and not the bones. My dogs eat raw fish all the time and have never vomited. That includes puppies as young as 5 - 6 wks which I have videos of if you's like to see that. Also, if your dog isn't used to eating raw and it out of the blue eats 10 raw fish that is to be expected. You should always ease your dog into a RAW diet to give their body time to adjust to the new food and resulting gut flora.

What a gorgeous dog. i guess i have to wait 20 years before we get even ONE in of these beautiful dogs in Norway :/ Just to give an example of how it is over here : there are about 10 Shilo shepherds in Norway. And the pricetag was 2900 dollars ( 25.000 Norweigan krones ) for each puppy from the breeder here in Norway.. insane......I guess you have to pay to get something exotic... But most types of shepherds are awesome dogs... I have one regular GSD ( the old type with a straight back ) and one Suisse White shepherd ( Berger Blanc Suisse ) the white "wolf" in my picture. 1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
No more unsanitary then kibble dog food which is often contaminated with the same raw food bacteria as raw foods. 18% of dogs have salmonella as a natural part of their gut flora and you are exposed to it every time they lick you. You should always wash your hands after handling kibble just like you would with raw meat. Dogs with stronger digestive juices and a shorter Gtrack aren't effected by them like we are. That's how they are able to scavenge and eat rotten foods we safely can't tolerate.

1st508th Airborne interesting I never knew dogs could go on a raw food diet. It must be very expensive if all their meals and treats are raw?
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
We do know. When both are put in front of them the always choose raw over kibble. They don't have to talk, all you have to do is watch their actions when given a choice and read their body language while they eat it. :-)

1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
Yes
Nebur Nynhs
Nebur Nynhs - 6 years ago
Most parasites die at -4 degrees F, and that temperature must be kept for a minimum of 7 days. Home freezers range between 10 degrees and 0 degrees. So if that fish had any sort of parasites in it, you didn't kill it, you just made it sound for a few days.
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
Your numbers are wrong for the amount of time needed and the large chest freezer I use easily freezes below that. That time for freezing varies depending on the meat and type of fish. Some fish can be frozen 3 days. Salmon, trout and a few other fish need to be frozen 7 days. Beef, chicken and Turkey 3 days. Wild game and pork should be frozen over 3 weeks.

Why do you feel the need to click bait
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
There is no click bait here so quit complaining. Click bait is when the title has nothing to do with the video. My title is what exactly happens in the video... THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FEED RAW FISH TO DOGS.... I show EXACTLY what happened.... HE ATE IT AND WAS TOTALLY FINE. That's the whole point of the video Einstein. I guess that went over your head. Don't watch my videos if you don't like the titles and go complain somewhere else. :-)

The only problem I've ever had with people feeding raw as a consistent diet isn't with the diet itself it's because of the breeding to exaggerate feature which hurt the dogs in the long run. A lot of dogs can't handle the high protein or the strain it can put on there teeth . Yes this is a diet is what they'd eat thousands of years ago but there ain't a dog today that's close to that. that being said I don't think your dogs have any problems with the diet, but its not for ever dog.

1st508th Airborne but those you talked about are wild animals.. our dogs are breed specifically for being pets maybe that made them weaker?
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
Do wolves, Dingo and other wild canines have damaged throats? No, they don't. Do wild felines... tigers, lions, bobcats, ect... have damaged throats? No. This is what nature designed them to eat and how it intended them to eat it. The diet was created by and is endorse by many vets. Look at the links I provided for people to learn more... a few of which go to vets. They aren't going to create and endorse the diet if it hurts dogs. I'm a former Animal Warden and Animal Cruelty Investigator and a big animal lover... I'm not going to feed it to them if I think it will hurt them. I have 20+yrs feeding it and never had a dog damage his throat.
Richard Ledesma

What if Unicorns are real and they fart out rainbow colored clouds of pixie dust that cause psychotic delusions when inhaled... 'what then?'

Lol... .

My dogs have eaten fish like this for 20+yrs without any issues just like their wild counterparts do when they scavenge fish. The British Columbian wolf along the coast lives primarily off of fish it finds. There is not a epidemic of dead wolves with fish spine stuck in their throats along the coasts.

FYI... a lot more dangerous things then fish fins for dogs....

RSD4rkMayhem ... Chop the fish up with a meat cleaver while it's semi-frozen. Less mess because the juices wont spill everywhere in the semi-frozen state. I would only give your dog a few chunks per day along with whatever else you're feeding it. Or give her whole mini fish like sprats or small sardines. Remember to freeze it for long enough to kill any worms, etc. (And yes, two weeks is a long time for raw fish to be lying around your apartment

That depend on what they eat? Typically no. Feeding it frozen keeps it neater... especially with fish. Sometimes I rinse off their paws and forearms if they get dirty. What many people don't realize is that kibble is often full of the same salmonella bacteria raw poultry is. You should always wash your hands after handling kibble just like you would with raw meat.

Yes it is. You have to look at what he is breed wise and what breeds were used to create that breed. He comes down from northern breeds and wolves that are designed to run for hours great distances. He could hike all day if I let him. The hikes we do are nothing for him physically. Watch the videos and see for yourself how he does. 1st508th Airborne

Do a little research. Freezing DOES NOT kill bacteria. This is a fact. Freezing does kill potential parasites. Also, wild canines come across and scavenge frozen dead game all the time in the winter. Again, a little research would tell you that.

You say freezing the food is "some ploy to stop you from having healthy dogs?" LMAO? Really? Do I work and shill from some mythical food freezing lobby out to nefariously harm people's dogs? Lol... ? Thanks for the morning laugh :-P

I have learned the last 2+yrs doing this that if I don't repeat the information you hear me repeat in these feeding videos I will get asked those questions over and over again in the comments of these videos. The vast majority of the views I get on these feeding videos are non-subscriber 1st time watchers. For example... I currently have 6000+ subscribers and this videos has 39000+ views and other feeding videos with 100s of 1000s of views. Most of these viewers haven't seen my other feeding videos. It's for them I repeat that information for in each of these videos. I wasn't offended by your comment and I'm glad you like my videos :-) . Now that you know I will repeat some of the same information in my feeding videos you can choose to watch them or not in the future. :-)

can you feed them fresh fish? like just caught not frozen? or do the bones get brittle when frozen?
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
You can feed them thawed fish, but should freeze it first for 3 days to kill any potential parasites. Salmon and trout should be frozen 7 days before feeding. One of the advantages to feeding the fish frozen is it is neater and doesn't get the dogs all full of fish oils and guts making them not smell fishy after eating it. :-)

don't they have to be frozen to a certain degree of temperature? are regular fridge enough for that? i thought only the commercial freezers are able to reach a temperature that low. Unless it's already been through that process? But if you caught the fish yourself and freeze it in your own fridge that's not not enough right? i could be wrong though.

Tilapia is hardly a natural diet.. not to be negative cause it's great how you care for your dog... but tilapia is not a fish they would find naturally unless they are from Africa or the middle east that and it's just a terrible fish to eat in general as it is one of the fish with the highest amounts of mercury. Once again by all means not trying to be negative just avoid tilapia. thanks for the awesome videos

Sheridan Lefanu
Sheridan Lefanu - 6 years ago
So you're saying starch for dogs is unhealthy? Being able to digest starch was a biological advantage dogs had over their wolf ancestors and allowed them to live alongside humans for millennia eating our scraps and leftovers. I know many pet owners treat their dogs like family and would turn their heads to feeding them scraps but that's how they have done it for a long time regardless whether they were hunting dogs or shepherds.

Besides eating starches in moderation for your dogs is not unhealthy as you've said but it stretches their meal and fills them up, apart from that they can also eat greens. Meat, starch and greens....doesn't that sound healthy? But I won't argue about your statement that "just because you're technically able to digest something doesn't mean it's ideal....", it makes sense however we shouldn't feed dogs just a carnivorous diets like their wolf ancestors, there has to be variety depending on where you live, I guess.
Ej MoreG

Sheridan Lefanu Just because you're technically able to digest something, doesn't mean it's ideal for your overall nutritious health... That goes for humans and canines, alike.

I don't understand why you think I'm vegan, I just asked whether he feeds his dogs starch as well as meat. Nothing wrong with feeding dogs starchy foods like rice, sweet potatoes or the like since dogs unlike wolves can digest starch; that's why they can live alongside humans since long time ago.

By the way I am not a vegetarian or vegan, and I love dogs I used to own a German Shepherd/Dalmatian mix, she loved to eat rice or sweet potato along with fish or meat.

Being in the food industry for over 17 years, we used NASA food handling guidelines. Freezing food only slows down bacteria growth, it doesn't kill it. Meat , fish & poultry bacteria multiply something like 1000xs in temps over freezing. So in effect feeding your dog frozen fish has much less bacteria. I agree with you that dogs have been eating raw meat forever. Zoo's feed their animals raw food.
DaveyF6B
DaveyF6B - 6 years ago
1st508th Airborne - You are correct about that, I must have not heard you correctly. Thanks for the response, and have a great day!
1st508th Airborne
1st508th Airborne - 6 years ago
I don't freeze the food to kill bacteria, I freeze it to kill any potential parasites. Freezing fish solid for 7 days kills any parasites in it. And yes, freezing does kill them. I'm not worried about bacteria like salmonella... 18% of dogs have this as a natural part of their gut flora. With stronger digestive juices and a shorter G Track then humans dogs aren't negatively affected by the same bacteria humans are. This is how canines in the wild are able to scavenge and it rotten foods we could never safely tolerate. :-)
