I will cover basic techniques as well as useful cheats to get you started. I show you what woods work, from the spindle of mullein to soft woods for the hearth board (cottonwood, aspen, poplar, spruce and cedar). Cattail stalks are an alternative, but it is quite fragile and I do not recommend it. I'll show you how to identify mullein weed and where to find it around old infill city lots and train tracks. Cheats include pre-drying your materials including your hearth board, spindle as well as using honey to coat your hand drill. Therefor, this is a biggers guide. I'll talk about blisters and how you only have 1 chance to produce a fire until you need to rest your hands for a week. *PS: That doesn't me you need to drugs to improve or change your live, it has to come from deep down, you have to be convinced yourself that you want to do something. It's your life live it the way YOU want not how others want you to live it. I made experiences in this regard but that's a Story for another day.
With that being said - I appreciate those kinds of videos even if "player base" isn't that big.
Pre-preparing primitive fire-making stuff is a very rare thing to do. I've done the hand drill technique in various environments, and in most cases, it's a PITY (Pain In The A$$). As long as it's not a drenched environment, it's doable, given the right available materials. When everything is soaked, might as well cuddle up next to a brown bear and call it a day. Grrrr. =)

1. Do you know the botanical name for that weed plan for the drill? I would like to try grow some here so I can give this a go.
2. Have you ever tried putting elastoplast (sports) tape over the friction areas of your hands to try and combat the hot spots? Maybe it could help with grip too?
3. Any more info on the properties of the hearth board? I am trying to think what might be available in my country, all most all woods here are either very hard woods or very resinous ones.

By the looks of it I think it might be Verbascum thapsus so I will give that a go. The seeds are pretty cheap too turns out, about $2 for 500.
Also, I'll go hunting for some better materials than I found the last time. I only made my hand drill set work, by applying my powered screwdriver (nice way to test that it's at least somewhat possible)...
Without wanting to do anything myself, I really hope for your success with all these videos (yeah, sorry for being so direct).
Now, I hope to have a video to show whenever time with allow me to toy around with this some more! :)

Appreciating all of your efforts, here...
Give me an ember the size of a dry grain of rice and I will give you flames every time. The key to that is having good CEs on hand. Such as char, char mixes, punkwood, most fungi, etc. Also fluff from cattails, thistles, Sycamore or milkweed. Hundreds of charred and uncharred options.
Once we have built that ember up into a nice sized coal, not a bad idea to then split it in half. One is brought, or attempted to be brought, to flame. The other sits to the side still smoldering in plenty of CE, just in case the first fails.
Dunno. Seems so obvious to me. Been using CEs since the late 1980s. Very rarely see anyone else using CEs. Oh well.
I "cheat" with the handrill. Thumb loops, gloves or shoes on my hands, etc. Plenty of blisters first learning it, so now it's any trick that saves my hands is a good trick. lol!

That being said, I grew up on a farm raising and eating my own animals and have fished for my entire life, so I am not trying to be defensive in my opinion, I just do not think its fair to say "you are not a man unless you do X".
If I misunderstood your point or you would like to explain your reasoning behind it a little more in-depth I would love to hear about it.

No proof whether Percussion Fire Ignition (Flint & Steel) or Friction Fore came first. F&S was relied upon by more people groups for longer. Maintaining embers from existing fires is actually the oldest and most used method for starting fires. Many means by which to carry embers around.
What materials could you use to make a primitive string, hide? guts? hair? tree bark? I think that would be an interesting challenge to see what you could find to make a primitive string from?

also if you feel like your hands are getting warm and feel like you might get some blisters. try lightly clapping your hands. Dont know why it works. but at least for me it works. i went to a survival camp trip for a week out in North Dakota. Person running it said to clap your hands lightly to prevent blisters if you chop wood, use drill, or climbing and some other things
