200g Reef Tank - Episode 15 - Rock Curing ( part 1 )

Howdy ship mates, well I finally got the aquascape the way I like it and I have started curing the rock. By curing I mean preparing it ready for cycling and becoming live rock. In this episode the rock work is in RO water removing loose debris and phosphates etc from the rock.

silly question but, i was always told 1kg rock per 10ltr water, now from the video it looks like you got a lot less than the suggested ratio ? How does this effect the overall system? Im taking delivery of an EAreef 1200 pro 441 litr and im starting as you, from scratch.

I'm just setting up a new tank and was going to buy the Mp40 but if its noisey I would rather buy something else. What were you thinking of getting? Great tank by the way :)

I'm not on UR, but you can check out episode 12 as I show how I did the aquascape in that video. I used acrylic rod and epoxy.

Yea I looked at the gyre seem good. I would love to see how you did your rockwork. What did you use to fix it together? In the past I used the Aquascape Construction Epoxy D&D but I don't like it! Are you on UR?
JDReef
JDReef - 7 years ago
Hi fella, I had the old mp40 Eco drives. The new mp40 quiet drives are a million times better. I'd get these if I had the money. But I'll most likely go with maxspect gyre or similar.

Cheers

Hi yes if you check out episode 12 that shows how I made the aquascape. I used dead rock, acrylic rods and epo putty.

i love it. i want to do 2 tall pieces in my tank on each side also with a small piece in the middle. how many pounds of live rock is this? im not sure how much im going to order because i never built something this big. im not going by x amount of pounds for x amoint of water but mainly for the look. something simple. my filters are ppwerful enough for the tank.
JDReef
JDReef - 9 years ago
Hi I think it was roughly 60kg but I added more later.

Ive been watching your videos on aquascaping. How come you dont have your rock on egg crate in the tank?
JDReef
JDReef - 10 years ago
Yeah dead simple mate. I took the rock and rubbed it back and forth on my concrete door step. This files down the rock beautifully and you end up with super smooth flat bits on the base rock. All sharp points etc all end up nice & smooth.
Liam Rutherford
Liam Rutherford - 10 years ago
I like the idea of sanding down the base rocks
thanks
JDReef
JDReef - 10 years ago
Hi Liam no I don't like egg crate on the bottom. Lots of little squares to collect detritus and it's not needed. I filed down my base rocks that were in contact with the glass. So it's perfectly safe and stable.
Some people use it some don't just a personal choice but I personally don't like or use it.

It's very interesting to go through all your videos. I really enjoy watching them. I have a question that why are you NOT having a lot of live rock? not only you but most of the time, people who have reef tanks would have much less liverock than those who have FOWLR's. From what I understand, It's recommended that we need 1lb-2lbs of LR/ gallon of water. You tank is 200g and I don't think your having more than 100lbs? The reason I'm asking is because I'm having a FOWLR with a lot of LR (90g with well over 120lb of LR) that will be soon a reef tank. Is it fine if I remove some of the LR? I'm afraid it will degrade the biological filtration.
JDReef
JDReef - 10 years ago
Thanks WHY, yeah your right in regards to amount of rock. I have a small bio load on this tank just now but I'm in the process of curing more rock for it. About to add another 16kg in four weeks time or so.

You could always take rock out your display and put it in your sump. That way you maintain biological filtering capacity and free up space in the display.

Like I say the pearl will be getting another island added soon. Plus any bits of rock I don't use will be sumped..

Cheers JD

Lol yeah everyone's different I just did it like this since I'm not in a rush and thought it wouldn't hurt. But like you say loads of ways to do it and it all works :)
JDReef
JDReef - 10 years ago
Thanks Genisis, a few reasons one was so that I could get as much crap off the rocks as possible. I did this by blasting the rock with a power head & scrubbing it with a toothbrush. Then drained & started with fresh RO & left it again so that any PO4 etc could leak out & my god some crap leaked out the water stunk really bad after a few days. The last reason was I had three weeks to wait till payday to get salt lol. But I'm glad I did the RO rinse especially after seeing what came out the rocks.

Thank you Tyler, In regards to the curing of the rock everyone is different. But what I'm doing is I've had the rock in RO water for 3 weeks replacing the water every 4-5 days. Now I'm adding saltwater and curing it in that for 2 weeks followed by a 100% water change. Then refill with fresh saltwater and start cycling the rock with Dr Tims one and only bacteria. Then it's just a case of waiting for it to cycle. I'm allowing 4-6 weeks for my rock. Thanks JD

Hey man, love the tank so far. I also love your videos, very thought out. I have a question though, how long did it take to cure the rock? I just ordered 31 pounds of dry rock and ill nees to cure it before I put it in the display. Again, loving these videos of the black pearl. She's looking beautiful

Yeah mate I can't stand the whining noise if its in wave mode it was worse when I had two of them though lol. Saying that I have a tunze 6045 nano stream and its noisier than the vortech just now. It is 6 years old though so think it needs replaced anyway. But all my pumps are temporary just to cure the rock as I'll be replacing them all further down the line anyway. Thanks man :)
