I am sure many will disagree with me here but after keeping over 60 types of zoas cheap and expensive... zoas are not an easy coral... sure they don;t require much... but in terms of knowing why they die or why they are not happy, good luck. I now have quite a few sps, tenuis, millis etc and I find by far they are wayyyyy easier to keep because when they start not doing good you know exactly why they are not happy.
Aside from that other beginner corals are clove polpys, mushrooms (some), acans probably the easiest lps..duncans as well, etc.

i would actually recommend star polyp coral because they grow fast and are pretty hardy BUT they have to be isolated on their own rock in the middle of the sand. the do thrive with good/high water flow . this was the first coral i put in my nano cube and its doing great

elegance corals are great to take up space on a budget, but it really depends whether you get lucky or not that you get a healthy specimen or not.

my first elegance literally went through HELL.

it started in my 8g QT tank that wasn't cycled, moved to my first ever saltwater DT, been in the sand, been on the rock, been in the shade, i was stressing the guy like crazy.

well, now it's super large, opens up huge, and has been hosting my clownfish for a year lol.

but i agree that duncans would make better beginner corals, they grow like MAD and you can feed them pretty heavily. My 1 head had 4 baby heads within 1 month. highly recommended!

OMG yes the impulse buys you feel like a complete loser when they die and even though he says these are beginner corporals don't just get them do your research on them talk to your fish store about them cuz what he says is for beginners doesn't necessarily there for your when he says for beginners he's talking about it as a whole community not saying that these aren't for beginners but you still need to do your research and it will save you in the long run

I am one of those peeps that is scared to death to try Zoanthinds not because of you, but others who have told me how dangerous they are. I met someone who was hospitalized because he got so sick. IF I get them....Im gonna need a good teacher to make sure I don't end up that way! I think Zoas and Palys are gorgeous, just terrified to try them LOL

Hey! Im totally new on this coral business. I love corals, im just wondering how ethical is this really? Companies that sell corals, do they take them from The ocean or do they grow it themselfes? I just really hop either is not from The ocean considering how vulnerable corals are and critical for the Eco system.
Aimee Roke

You just have to ask wherever you buy them. Sign up for a local forum - lots of people aquaculture corals in their own tanks and will sell frags for cheap. Good luck!

Very easy, too easy, make sure it is isolated or it will take over in no time. Same as Xenia. A great, easy coral is Hammer coral. Medium flow and light, will tolerate various light but be careful of the flow as the polyps can tear from the inside on its own skeleton if it's to turbulent. You'll know quite easily because they won't fully extend if the flow is too strong.

I have the AP700's and they are amazing lights. There has been some programming issues but you can't deny the smooth transitions, the intensity, I am growing corals at 55% intensity. I think I have gone through all the issues one can go through but have them running without a hitch now. They give the most realistic looking light IMO, I do a lot of snorkelling on the reefs and the shimmer is the same. Love them.

I highly disagree with the elegance coral. They die WAY too often and its yet to be common knowledge on which is the best parameters. If you get an elegance from Indo Pacific area(which is 90% of all imported) it is more than likely going to die due to the manner it is harvested in. If you want an elegance coral to live you're gonna need an aussie which is easily $150, and even then they're extremely temperamental. A much more realistic coral would be anything in the euphyllia family. Much easier, cheaper, more common and grows much faster.

yeah that may be true for a newbie or beginner...... but i have been in this hobby for about 10 years. i have about 50 ish anemones in my 1000 gallon system all with a breeding pair of clowns in them that have laid eggs before with many successful batches.
ReefRealEstate
ReefRealEstate - 7 years ago
Most Anemones are hard to keep. Condylactis are the easiest but very rarely if ever host clowns, occasionally they actually have some colour other than brown. Most Anemones are not a good idea for a reef tank as they move around and destroy corals. Never purchase a white anemone, they will die in a matter of weeks as they have been bleached in order to be more attractive for resale. (Natural algae in anemones is brown). If you must buy one I have found that the carpets are best, mainly because they don't move around too much and I have had the most luck with them. Anemones are very sensitive to parameters and lighting, plus you need to feed them. Be sure to have intense enough lighting for them to survive, lighting that will penetrate to the substrate which is where carpets like to be. Any questions let me know.

What do you want to know? Number one thing is to start reading, also go to BRS TV they have a 52 weeks of reefing videos. Some of it is overkill but go through the videos as you need them in order not to get overwhelmed. Number one tip is to go as big as you can, saltwater tanks are much harder when they are too small. Doesn't allow for a margin of error. Have a look at my channel. Have been doing videos from my start up of my 270 Gallon reef tank. New update coming soon.

Hey a question about parameters, I don't dose so mine are Ca-380, Mg-1240, Alk-7.2. I have 4 soft corals that grow fine. But will these parameters be ok for LPS like that elegance coral?

Shilpan Patel Probably they wont do the best, why dont you start dosing? 2 part dosing or Kalkwasser are cheap and simple dosing methods. Search them up and you will see how easy it is. Good luck:)

Thank you! I have always been afraid to keep elegance corals, but I am very well known with softies. Now I feel more confident of getting an LPS for once! Thanks again!
