Putting that large of a clean up crew in a tank that new with so little fish is just going to cause them to die and add nitrated to your tank. They'll probably start eating each other. Check out the clean up crew video for the BRS 160.

bryangulledge

The first time you add fish it dosent matter as much. When you have a tank that well stocked you need to qt to not infect you several year old tank.

Chris Kleis
Chris Kleis - 7 years ago
nice looking tank for sure. but for the blue spotted jaw fish u need a bigger sand bed. and that guy was skinny. I suggest spot feeding them lot of times cause other fish usually get all the food first . blue spotted jawfish really stay in there hole usually. and he was right they are jumpers at night . when activity dies down in evening hours they get some balls and make this huge dash to the top and end up on the floor .
Chris Kleis
Chris Kleis - 7 years ago
I wouldn't have added that much of a clean up crew just yet. there isn't enough algae and other stuff for them to eat. half could die from little good source and cause bigger issues when they die
Chris Kleis

Be careful how you're acclimating the fish. They may not all have been kept in the same water systems so mixing them all together like that could accidentally cause more stress.

trojanman315

Invest thousands in a massive tank... and then not run QT... Farm Boy logic indeed, what a moron
trojanman315
trojanman315 - 7 years ago
zRekz never said he couldn't do whatever he wants, everyone can. I was just commenting that he's a moron for the way he wants to do this.

A 6 tank QT setup might cost 300 bucks total... MAYBE. Let alone a single at tank... You can spend more on a single powerhead...

So it's not a matter of time it's a matter of patience and effort which he apparently doesn't have.
Ty
Ty - 7 years ago
my whole point was that he can do things how he like, yeah he will have diseases but if he wants to treat the whole system if there are any diseases, fine
trojanman315
trojanman315 - 7 years ago
zRekz wrong, IF there is a sick fish, you are correct that it won't get existing fish sick because there are no existing fish... BUT what it definitely will do is introduce that sickness into the water and rock and sand of his beautifully large CLOSED LOOP SYSTEM that is a fish tank. Now his giant new expensive tank has sickness all throughout the system, and he can do one of two things then... 1. Remove ALL LIFE, fish and inverts alike from the system for a minimum of 2 months, more safe would be 4 months to starve the pathogen or disease of fish to propagate on and therefore die out in the system. This is not guaranteed to eliminate the problem as the disease may just go dormant depending on what he gets.

OR 2. dose his giant new system with a whole bunch of nasty meds that do not belong in the CLOSED LOOP SYSTEM that he just spent all this time on.

Either way a tank is a CLOSED LOOP as I keep putting in all caps. Simple logic dictates that you should NEVER put something inside a closed loop unless you know exactly what it is and what may come along with it. He's literally dumping bags of hope into his tank... HOPE that every person and company that has touched those fish since they were born has given them correct quarantine, care and also inspected them with a virtual microscope to see if they have or have come down with any illness or disease. You simple CAN NOT AT ALL inspect a fish for disease in a plastic bag over the course of an hour of drip acclamation. Some diseases (take ick for example) can lay dormant in a fish for literal weeks before it EXPLODES ALL OVER YOUR TANK
Ty
Ty - 7 years ago
yeah but the new tank can be used as qt, as there was no fish to fuck up in the first place, once you get everything sorted, add more fish
Jonathan Lee
Jonathan Lee - 7 years ago
zRekz new tank means no QT? HAHA. One sick fish can fuck up the whole tank before he even adds anything else
Daniel Eckert
Daniel Eckert - 7 years ago
zRekz final answer? Are you sure that’s how that works?

Ohhhh I would have QT'd, especially on a tank that large. You're going to be adding a lot of fish and they'll be next to impossible to catch in there if they get sick. I know a lot of people say QT is stupid blah blah, so did I for 2 years. It's all fun until you get 1 fish carrying velvet that you dont notice until it's too late. 1/2 my fish wiped out and the most important ones to me died with them. I only QT from now on.

Im a bit worried that you didn't qt the fish and clean up crew. I am having to start all over again (still a newbie) and this is the biggest lesson I learned. Setting up a new saltwater system sucks because I trusted my lfs who normally always qt their fish. I brought to fish home and stuck them in my main tank. In three days I lost everything. I will never not qt again....I don't care who says they did it already
Ryan Browne
Ryan Browne - 7 years ago
I agree! The clean up crew definitely needs to be put in QT. I bought a dozen turbo snails, and they had velvet. Killed half of my fish in a few days.

vigilhammer
vigilhammer - 7 years ago
dude thats too many snails man.
I had 3 snails for my 200 gallon, and they were enough. So for 700 even 5 would be fine.
Snails dirty the tank as well and when they reproduce, they do very quickly with 500-600 eggs which hatch and then fall in the tank and the other fish might end up eating which would cause them discomfort because of the hard shell not gettin digested

Looking Amazing so far! From your attention to detail on every aspect of the build. Absolutely stunning! My only recommendation is to QT anything wet going into your tank. That includes crabs and snails. From someone who also has a monster system and has suffered major losses. Take my advice. I can help if you have any questions on how to QT.

At long last, after so much time and effort, your tank comes to life. Those flame hawkfish are so cool to watch, we recently got one and enjoy his little personality. Be warned tho that they do eat shrimp so if your shrimp disappear the hawkfish probably got them, ours made short work of our 2 fire shrimp in a couple of weeks.

Hey FBR - love your videos, and the tank is looking sweet. You might consider abandoning the 1 per gallon CUC advice - it is rather antiquated guidance from a couple decades ago when we didn't have the type of filtration we have today. You have a nicely designed system with good nutrient export, and likely won't need that volume. I would stop adding any more CUC until/if you see a need for them. As already stated by some below, most of that CUC will starve in the next couple months, since your tank is so young, and I assume you will not be adding food specifically for them. The goal is to create a balance between nutrient export and bioload (CUC, fish, corals), and with a tank so young, it is impossible to determine that balance - i.e. the 1 per gallon guidance is impossible to verify. I would start with 1/10th of that, and see if you need any more at all. Also, you'll have to watch the blue spot jawfish carefully, as they are a temperate water species (~72 degrees), and often don't do well at ~78 degrees. Some get lucky, but often need a tank specifically designed for them. Beautiful fish though - I've been tempted many times! There are also some good sources for tank-raised/aquacultured CUC, so you aren't taking so much from the wild (that might ultimately starve) - would be nice to highlight that on your videos as well - look at IPSF.com, Biotaaquariums.com, etc. Looking good thought, impressed with the DIY skills!
