75 Gallon Reef Tank With Herbie Overflow - Sump Test

This was my first test of my Herbie method overflow. After 5 months I have found this method to quiet and reliable. My biggest problem in the beginning was having the pipes going into my sump to far down past the waterline. This caused too much much back pressure when it came to pushing out air when restarting the return pump after maintenance/power outage. After I shortened them to just below the waterline everything went back to normal on my restarts. The emergency pipe has only been needed one time when a snail got stuck in the main overflow pipe. I have found that the valve on the main overflow pipe is about 90% closed. That small amount is all that is needed when running a full siphon with a 950gph return pump. This tank is in my living room/dining room area and no one ever mentions any noise and that's a beautiful thing.
it is silent) and a 2nd one that is used for an emergency drain in case the main drain
becomes compromised which would lead to flooding the display tank because
the water coming from the return pump in the sump would not be able to drain back down and then would overflow the tank.

with that set up because it tends to be a bit fickle. Mostly when I shut off my return pump, then start it up again.....it tends not to always go back to the proper amount of flow I want in each part of the sump and I have to play with it. I think if I did it over I would probably get a little bigger return pump and have the return feed the fuge so I have more flexibility with how much flow I want. I have some cheato in the fuge
now, and after almost a year now my parameters are becoming a lot more consistent.
