90 gal. Reef Tank Stand Build (part 1)

I'm building a stand for my 90 gal reef tank. This video outlines the approach I took to build the frame and tools that I used. I hope this is helpful if you are thinking about building a stand for yourself. I will have a follow-on video that will outline how I skin the stand with plywood and all the finishing touches.

I have just bought the a positioner system for my router table, so I will likewise need some initial projects to practice on. These plans are fantastic [Check Details Here⇒>☞★☞https://t.co/iXCQHZs6zp ] and I highly recommend it to all who desire to have the best designs in woodwork.

There's nothing like these collection of plans on the market today [Check Details Here⇒>☞★☞https://www.facebook.com/Tedswoodworking-262698340809686/app/20819510252812 ]. I wish had come across these plans when I was designing my first woodwork designing. They are all of excellent qualities and very affordable.

What is the height of your stand?
SuperDrummer311

Your wood supports are totally supported ONLY by 5 screws on either side of the wood. For a tank that is going to be over 1200 lbs that is crazy. The your way over sheer weight strength of those screws. Triangle of wood didn't matter - it's still just the sheer weight of the screws going into the side. No weight support. THAT's NUTS!

You should have uprights of at least 2 x 4 's going up for the end horizontals to sit on so the weight can be supported and transferred down to the floor.  You really should have center supports, or 2 x 8's as you have over a 3 foot span with no support.

Think about it. Building code has you putting supports every 16 inches. You may get by OK.
But I'd rather be safe and not risk my tank, fish, floor, carpet, and whatever is under the floor the tank is sitting on.

Important thing to remember is to have the screws just holding the wood in place. Do not have the screws so that they are supporting the weight.  Put the wood uprights so the butt end is up against the upper and lower pieces of wood. Then just use screws at an angle or with a small piece of scrap wood alongside or whatever to secure the wood pieces.

I see your point, I think the weight of the tank is only supported by the four legs and partially by the screws. Do you think adding the "legs" Troy used in the front of the tank also to the sides will give better support?

I am about to try and build this stand. I am going to try and go through the video and write down all the specs on the wood as you say them. But I was also curious if you had a list of everything you used to make this stand just in case I miss something or something is left out of the video. If I could get that list in a reply or a message that would be a ton of help. Love the work. - Alex

Where did you get the wood from? Specially the maple plywood?

I used 1/4" Maple plywood and all the lumber was purchased at Lowes, but you should be able to find it at your local Hardware store.

Hi Troy huge fan and appreciate all the great videos! Is there anyway you can message me the plans/dimension you used? I'm also building a stand for the Aqueon 90g and would love make something similar as yours.

I'm curious as to how much your stand weighs. The finished product looked very nice but as a retired licensed contractor, I have to ask why not use a half-lap miter joints and 2x4's instead of 2x6's and so many screws? Just curious.

+macbirt56 Thanks, the wife is generally happy when I finish a project with no major injuries.  Good luck with the tank and stand, would love to see the finished project!

Kudos then sir. Most people who are not trained in the field would not end up with such an impressive finished product. I was looking, as you did, for ideas for a stand for my turtle tank, I liked yours the best but I think I will tone mine down a bit in scale. Wish me luck. BTW, my house was built in 1891 so weight IS a concern for me. :-)

Well, since I had to google what a "half-lap miter joints" is that my be telling...:)

This is definitely not my professional field, so I built my stand based on various videos on the subject.  Lumber is generally inexpensive and weight wasn't really a concern, so I guess you can chalk it up to overkill.

Great video I also have been out if the hobby for about 7 to 8 years and watched some YouTube videos of New York Steelo and got the itch.so I bought a 56 gallon tank and hate the stand not enough room underneath.Im a autobody painter with no wood working skills but my brother inlaw is a union carpenter so I will show him your video for good tips thx and look forward to your videos and also I to had to buy everything over again I'm a year into still buying equipment very expressive hobby thx

Thanks, part of what got me out of the hobby was all the daily activities that you had to perform to maintain your tank.  Thankfully now you can automate a lot of it, but all those bits of equipment are expensive.  Took me over a year to acquire everything and get the tank running, but now that it is up it was worth it.  One thought that I would like to share with you; I have been working with someone that built his stand to support a 55 gal (same length as a 90 gal) but built the stand with the depth to support a future 90 gal.  He knew that he would want to upgrade in the future.  That may or may not apply to you, but worth thinking about.

Hi Danny, so if I do my math right your tank in feet (US) is 5.9' x 1.64' x 1.64' and will contain ~80 gal (US). The overall weight of you tank isn't anymore than my, it is just about 2' (or ~600 mm) longer. I would think that you would be fine with the lumber dimensions that I used and not have a center brace. If you are concerned you can jump up to the next large size for the top cross member (I used a 2in x 6in, so you could use a 2in x 8in and should be fine). I hope this helps!
