This is a quick look at my 125 gallon reef tanks refugium. I go over the layout, sand, macro algae and lights i use. I also go over the benefits of ruing a refugium. I use a 55 gallon sump and half of it is dedicated to the refugium section. I have 3.5 inch sand bed with two types of macro algae chaetomorpha and caulerpa. Hey hex, I'm kinda new to refugiums. And I want to build one for my 200g. I have a lot of space under my tank and I plan to build the refu in the sump chamber next to the skimmer and then the water flows to another chamber where it gets pumped into the tank again. Any suggestions?

question... i have a 55 gallon tank and i have 4 pounds of sand in the entire thing and its about 2 inches thick all around how did you put almost double that and only have it 3 inches in half a tank... doesn't make sense

Do you need nitrates in the water to feed this stuff I have 0 but I high phosphates thats why I put some in there.

thanks for the infomation.
I have no nitrates/nitrites and have cleaned my entire sump of debris im even using continuum phos-correx daily.
I dont get it anymore why there high. I even have 500ml of phos gaurd and dont over feed and roast water has no phosphate.

If you have phosphates then a good chance you still have nitrates. But cheato uses up 16 to 1 nitrates to phosphates. Refugiums are great to help remove nutrients but they would need to be very big to really make big differences in water quality.

I have a Chaeto problem. At first it grows well, but then tiny bits of it turn white & die. I have bright lights that I run all day & fairly stable salinity. I do not have any animals yet, but I am dosing 2 drops of Excel Flourish each day. I don't if it maybe grows until it exceeds the amount of fertilizer available, then starts to die?? I also have 1 small live rock w/ Coralline algae & diatoms on it in the system.

Hey I have also had it die because it was floating and not submerged.

When cheato dies its either a lack of nutrients or to much light. With no livestock that could be the reason.

I have a 100w 6500k cfl but my fish load is low. Do I need 2 have a ton of fish to grow it?

cheato doesnt need a lot of light, just have the 6500k bulb and turn it on when the lights in the main display go off. The only time i have had a hard time growing macro algae is when i let me tanks nutrients get to low.

Some people say "Chay-toe" and some say "chee-toe" I have to stick with pronouncing it "chay-toe" since a "chee-toe" is a crunchy cheesy snack food.

G'day Travis, very impressive chaeto growth, we had never been successful with it thus far and I know it's been due to poor lighting, only had a 12" fluorescent and the chaeto just gradually disintegrated. I have now just bought 2 90watt leds rated at 5000k from home depot (only using 1 at the moment) and got some more chaeto.
I was wondering what your light schedule is in your fuge, do you have it timed on and off and if so how long for?
I'm tired of having an empty fuge so if I can get mine growing successfully like you I'd be forever grateful.

I have my refugium running the opposite of my reef. My whites go off at 8pm until 11 am during that time the fug is on.
