so literally you open up the tap and a water comes out. that means all crap stays at the top of your sand, u just change the water.

I've always liked aquariums of all types and terrariums as well. All I've ever had were Guppies goldfish and bettas. I was wondering if a completely sealed 5 gallon or less jar would be possible? Specifically I would not need to open it up and the only necessary thing added was sunlight.
TheCoralReefTalk
TheCoralReefTalk - 7 years ago
You would need to do water changes and natural sunlight can cause unwanted algae to grow and take over.

Don't you get major evaporation with no lid? Looks real nice.

I change the water every 3 days or so. I have tested and went a week and it evaporates a few inches. I try to keep it changed and topped off.

Do you need a bubble for this setup
TheCoralReefTalk

+aaron123456 I have seen pico aquariums that use a bubbler and I had originally planned on it however I have the small hydor pico pump agitating the water.

thatsLITfam 22 - 7 years ago
TheCoralReefTalk i have heard that dwarf sea horses really don't need much space. Don't personally have any experience, but i have seen them in 1.5-3 gallon tanks
TheCoralReefTalk
TheCoralReefTalk - 7 years ago
I don't have experience with seahorses but they can be difficult and with the tank being so small I wouldn't add a Seahorse, a Dwarf Seahorse maybe 10 gallons, but like CheshirePlayZ mentioned larger the better.

why aren't you using the pump with hose for the bubbles. corals need that flow for their health.
Robert treboR

I would love to copy this. But I have only done fresh water. I hear with salt water bigger the water volume easier it is. I would only want a shrimp or 2 and a snail also. Would you recommend this for a noob?
TheCoralReefTalk
TheCoralReefTalk - 7 years ago
Your right the larger the water volume the easier it can be, because your water parameters tend to be more stable. Things like your salinity tend to stay balanced as long as your keeping the aquarium topped off. When I first started, I went with a 29 gallon aquarium. It was a good size tank where I could add some fish while continuing to learn about water chemistry and testing and then add corals later.

Using the pvc and spigot from the jar for water changes is such a fantastic idea! Just a warning though, I've purchased one of those Yorkshire dispenser jars before and it shattered from a very light tap from a spoon while mixing lemonade. I probably had a defective one, but it didn't leave me too confident about that brand in general.
TheCoralReefTalk
TheCoralReefTalk - 7 years ago
Sorry to hear about your Yorkshire Jar, maybe something was over tightened or it was defective like you mentioned. Thanks for checking out the video and thanks for the warning. So far I have had no problems with the dispenser. It really is working out for water changes, its great and it gets the job done.
