Is it possible to fit an invert or 2 in there, like a fire shrimp, emerald crab, hermit crab? I'm cycling my 10g nano right now and I'm planning on stocking it with 2 clowns, a fire goby, or royal gramma, and an invert or 2. Idk about the royal gramma though, since I heard it's aggressive.
ParaTimbre
ParaTimbre - 7 years ago
I just got an emerald crab yesterday in addition to my 2 clowns. However, I'm scared because I heard that sometimes they'll eat fish and other inverts. Has this happened in your experience?
ParaTimbre
ParaTimbre - 7 years ago
Awesome. Did the Emerald Crab and FireShrimp help a lot with the waste?

Yeah I actually just stocked it with 2 clowns. I'm just thinking on what the 3rd fish will be. I'm really liking the Yellow Watchman Goby, but Firefish and Royal Gramma are close seconds.
Dodge Andersen
Dodge Andersen - 7 years ago
I eventually added a emerald crab and peppermint shrimp. Both did great. I would just stick with the clowns and firefish, 4 fish might be pushing it

some clownfish do, like a maroon clownfish... as young fish they don't, if you go into a petstore they are never kept in an aquarium that they are meant to be in as adult size. but remember fish get big despite the tank the are in, so eventually they will get too big for the tank they are in and need a bigger one. so for the sake of not having to have multiple tanks, just put them in the biggest one you can possibly get for them, and afford of course.

The live rock/sand has really come to life on this update. What camera are you using and how are your video files looking so crisp on youtube. I have an old Canon Powershot ELPH 110 HS 16.1 megapixels and it always looks blurry on youtube and youtube always asks me to upload to original quality. And would you recommend ornamental shrimp like peppermints, cleaners, coral banded, harlequin, etc in a 10g nano tank??
TheBishop12
TheBishop12 - 8 years ago
Holy smokes now I HAVE to upgrade my 5 now haha. Sounds good man i'll keep that feeding tip in mind.
Dodge Andersen
Dodge Andersen - 8 years ago
I actually just used my iPhone 6 Plus!! And then I uploaded it directly to YouTube on my phone in 1080. And yeah shrimp are fine as long as you keep them fed well so they won't accidentally munch on your corals! I added a peppermint shrimp not long after this video and fed him flake food with a long set of tweezers and he would snatch it right from them! I also got a sexy shrimp but he disappeared not long after I purchased him.

Dodge - This is one of the most charming videos I've ever seen! As an inveterate marine aquarist, I applaud your candor and humility. There's nothing more annoying than a prick who's more proud of himself than his tank. "It's a wise man who admits that which he doesn't know". Your tank is excellent! Saltwaterfish.com does indeed rock. One treat you might consider for your carnivores and the pink tip: get a raw "table shrimp", devein it, cut into small pieces and freeze in a plastic bag. Thaw as needed and I promise your animals will reward you with health and vigor. Keep it up, man!
Jeff Henderson
Jeff Henderson - 9 years ago
+Dodge Andersen Just promise me that you'll keep it up. Your passion is obvious and admirable. However, one caveat on those giant systems: (I maxed out at 125G)....In these small tanks, parameters are easy to control as are unwanted guests. In a 500G, one little unseen aiptasia or another parasite can overtake your tank bring you down in two weeks time. Sometimes, simple is best. And all the best to you, pal!
Dodge Andersen
Dodge Andersen - 9 years ago
+Jeff Henderson Thank you Jeff! I really did love having my tank! It was so rewarding and fun to take care of. Sadly, I had to move into a new apartment, and they have a strict no animal policy (including fishtanks) so I had to get rid of this tank. Luckily, my dentist in my hometown has a reef tank and I sold all these little guys to him! I get to go see them anytime I visit home! I will definitely start up another tank when I have a more permanent place to live. My goal is to custom build a huge tank that is 500+ gallon. (Probably will be a long time before that lol) With my dad and I's construction background I think we will be able to build something pretty spectacular. Thanks for the kind words and I wish you luck with all your tanks!

Hey man I'm thinking of turning one of my 10 gall tanks to salt is it good If get the same supplies as you..but I have no idea what light to get any suggestions ??
Jeff Henderson
Jeff Henderson - 9 years ago
+Victor Perez Yo, Victor! Depending on what livestock you want, LED technology is the smartest option. You can spend $50 or $600. I spent $40 on each of four 10G nanos. I grow SPS (small polyp stony corals), LPS (large polyp stony corals), zoanthids, crabs, snails, shrimp (be careful, some eat coral polyps) and select fish (basslets, tangs, wrasses, reef friendly guys) with LEDs only. Regular frequent water changes are all you need besides lights and live sand. You must start with live sand to jump start your nitrogen cycle.

Jeff, I am glad to know that one can start marine reeftank with such a lean setup, usually pet store suggests protein skimmers, filters like Hydra20 and a lot of stuff even at the start-up..Dodge thanks alot for this simple and informative video..
Jeff Henderson
Jeff Henderson - 9 years ago
+michaelvideo's Basically, the answer is yes. If your current hang-on filter has a bio-wheel, then certainly! If not, then you'll just need to do frequent water changes which you should do anyway. Depending on what animals you want, your current lighting might work as well. If you want to develop and learn about corals, spend a little on LEDs. I got a fantastic clip-on blue/white actinic for $20.

How difficult is it to care for a tank at college? I'm going this year and really want to bring my tank but I'm worried about water changes and how difficult it will be ?
Jeff Henderson
Jeff Henderson - 9 years ago
+MrWaddlezzzz It's not hard....especially for nanos. Keep one gallon mixing (with an airstone) at all times. Then, once a week or so just replace old water with new. It's so much simpler than people think. Fresh sea water is cheap, easy and it replaces 1000s of dollars in equipment.
Dodge Andersen
Dodge Andersen - 9 years ago
+MrWaddlezzzz It's definitely something that is going to take a lot of your time so you have to decide if it's worth it. Sometimes I felt as if my tank was taking my time I could have been studying but if you're a good time manager you should be fine

I feel as though once the clowns reach maturity they'll harass the firefish to death but you'll cross that bridge when the time comes. Nice tank

They still don't mess with him at all they stay in one part of the tank and the fire fish stays in the other! When feeding they just share and never touch each other.

+Andreas Chryseliou In such a small system, a refugium isn't a viable option. These tanks (and I have four) would be ridiculous if you tried to maintain separate cleansing filters....water changes are really about all you need but you have to stay on top. I simply run bio-wheels (Marineland) and change one gallon every other day (or three days if I get lazy) and there's no need for skimming or dosing or expensive filtration equipment. Just take used water out and put new water in.

+Johanan Micaiah I'm not entirely sure, I've never run a refugium myself.

I know that there are many 'display' refugiums which are designed to look nice as well as serve a purpose.

Most of these have multiple forms of macro-algae's or Mangrove plants.

I don't know if you can just 'not' grow ugly algae's in a fuge though.

+Andreas Chryseliou If you had a tank full of macroalgae, like a planted tank, would that mean that undesirable algae will be outcompeted? That is after all the function of refugiums right?
Andreas Chryseliou

Yes, a water change is the best thing for a small tank.

Skimping out on maintenance is just a recipe for algae blooms.

+Andreas Chryseliou But even if there was one clown, husbandry should still be carried out right?
Andreas Chryseliou

There's also only 10 Gallons.

In reality, just one of those Clowns would max out the stock capacity for a 10G.

As long as the husbandry is taken care of though, it should be fine.

your clowns aren't fighting. They are figuring out which is male and which will be female. Eventually one will give in and the other will grow larger. The larger one will be the female. Sweet tank!
