A protein skimmer takes gunk out of the water before it brakes down and turns into nitrates. It just makes your life easier.

+Kevin Wilson and everything aquariums most sps do not need ultra clean water as they can be keep in no3 levels . as I been keeping marine for over 30 years and have tank with sps in them and levels of no3 at 30 plus .so the sps one is wrong . we can go around this all day. but in till the cow's come home I know u need a skimmer . as I do sell over 10000 fish and coral a year I would never run a tank or system without a skimmer

+Reefstoreltd Gordon i dont dissagree with you, but it has alot to do with husbandry. if my tank had sps coral and needed ultra pure water and stability, no flucuations in calcium or what not then sure get a massive skimmer. My tank iS softies and lps and they like a little dissolved organics so no need for a skimmer! if you keep up with maintance and buy critters that eat algae.

I do top up ro and I dos elements . in a 5000 Lt Tank I keep 70 fish most are big fish . you see if u tell people u do not use a skimmers . you find new people will not use one them will have problems . when stocking there tanks . that a fact in this hobby. why would all the sea life center and top aquarium use them in all there systems. if not needed.

+reef water king betterthemthebest its all about husbandry, i actually have 17 fish, but all small except for 2 tangs. but i have A MASSIVE CLEAN UP CREW. i feed small and often, and change socks every week with 20-30 gallons.
I am using a skimmer! LARGE WATER CHANGES.

+reef water king betterthemthebest I use a skimmer, Kevin has about 10 fish in his system, thats a lot of fish. Every tank is different, his main filtration is the Live Rock, he has a lot of rock.
With that ive seen people run ATS with live rock, macro and thats it. Also he does water changes. Youre right, more fish does create issues down the road.

yes .but there not a lot of them , it give people the mind set you can run a marine tank with no skimmer , this is un true , as the more u stock it with fish the more you need a skimmer , i can run a coral tank with a hand full of fish with no skimmer , with a 1000lt tank too not hard to do ,,,but if i put loads of fish in it would crash with out a skimmer ,

Hi Ryan, Tidal gardens said a good tank to start off with is a 120g. I agree that larger is easier because it allows more forgiveness if you mess up. Your parameters don't swing as fast. I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and thanks for the SUB. I'd get the 150g

Hey Kevin. Keep in mind if you ever get into sps corals that lanthanum chloride (phosphate rx) will lower your alkalinity. Also some fish have been shown to have respiration problems if the precipitate makes it into their Gills. We use it readily in the zoo and aquarium industry but dose it into sand filters, protein skimmers, or filter socks so that the precipitate never makes it into display tanks. Your tank looks great thanks for sharing.

Thanks i have a 40 gallon with no sump only using my live rock ,live sand ,protein skimmer and marine pure seems to be doing great but my protein skimmer is always playing up so would love to take it off if i could get the tank to run with out it

+Lee and Mandy Battersby Hi Lee, your live rock will help filter your tank. But in the video Kevin had a 30g sump full of macro algea. You could do it, every system is different which is why its cool to see how everyone else is doing it.
