I must be doing something right, lol. I do have a 20 gallon. however I started out with live crushed coral and sand and a starter biological additive. Cycled the tank for 2 months, then added 2 damsels. continued with them until 6 months. then added 2 clowns. thinking of adding coral. this video was very informative. the water changes does throw me off as I'm a massive water changer in my 60 gallon freshwater with my python. the once month at 25% in the saltwater is working great though. I've actually ran the tank on a hob filter. upgrading to a canister because I have an issue with salt creep. hoping it's an easy transition. I don't plan to add more fish other than maybe some clean up crew. so I think I'll be ok with the size tank.

I use the Continuum products in my F/W tanks. I think it's great stuff, but it's so damn expensive here in Australia. But it works much better than any others I have used!

Clownfish are damsel fish. another good starter fish would be green chromis. I would do corals before an anemone. Anemones seem to be really sensitive. good beginner corals would be star polyps, Kenya Trees and mushrooms. a good aquarium salt would be reef crystals or Red Sea. I personally use reef crystals and have had fantastic results. you also want to have a bunch of Hermits and maybe a emerald crab AKA clean up when you start your tank to help it cycle.

I think this guy is delirious. How can he expect a person to wait 6 months to put coral in. If the water quality is good and the right conditions are met there ain't a problem. And how is a person that is just "testing the waters" so to speak going to be able or willing to afford a 55 gallon reef tank. Well over a thousand dollars. And you do not want anemones around coral and you sure as heck don't add them in before you do coral. Hello physiology...

Can you set up a salt water tank without using anything harvested from the oceans? I have wanted to do salt for ever but i only ever see that the fish and corals are normally harvested from the ocean instead of bred/grown in captivity. I love the salted tank but something seems to cruel to me about taking fish out of the ocean and sticking them in a small box... like a billion gallons versus 200 gallons, is no comparison, and coral takes so long to grow that harvesting is killing reef systems in the oceans. Would love to know what species are doing the least damage to the ocean!!

don't buy damsels for your reef tank they are aggressive and can bully an other fish to death start with one maybe two clowns if your tank is big enough clownfish are hardy fish

He said once the tank is cycled you would probably want to bring the Damsels back and then get clown fish, i guess it depends on your LFS though :)

good video. A suggestion, when you are asking a question, keep it simple and straight forward. I noticed you are repeating the same thing multiple times in the same questions. e.g. what about maintenance and water changes of salt water aquarium? I heard "maintenance" and "water changes" 3 times in one question.
Other than that, keep up the good work. I like your content.

While Mr.Kent is way more knowledgeable than I am I disagree on the subject of tank size. Most people don't want to spend the money on a 55g or larger to start off when it may just end up on craigslist a month later. A good 55g setup can cost thousands. I started a 15g 6 months ago and have had great success.. As long as your well versed in taking care of a planted tank you can transfer that husbandry knowledge to reef keeping. I do recommend doing a lot of saltwater research first. Once you get the hang of it its pretty easy. Just remember, nothing good happens quick in a reef tank. Wait months to add fish/corals and don't rush anything.

I recently started a saltwater tank. I fucked up and got a mandarin. He will only eat live foods. But my tank is small so i have to breed Copepods in a buckets. But before him the salt tank wasn't that bad. Just water changes are a pain in the ass.

Those were some great tip man. Another good thing to do is have as much live rock in your tank and sump meaning more is better remember thats part of your filtration. Thanks for sharing bro.

I am in the plans of starting a salt water tank currently. Unfortunately I do not have the money or space for a 55 so i am going to take a shot at a 20g nano. I have no issues with keeping up with maintenance so I think I should be okay with a light bio load and no corals for a few months.

+garretts91 oh yeah I heard. Figured I would just want to avoid the pests that can come with buying second hand live rock. I plan on keeping the bio load low as well (2 clowns, shrimp and one other fish). By the time the dry rock becomes live I'll have the money to buy a few corals :p

sure nothing wrong with dry rock. It will just take a bit longer. Things take time with saltwater. Good your going to take it slow!

I started with a 15g 6 months ago. I've had no major issues. I also have planted tanks. Just be religious about the maintenance and you'll be fine. Get a nice sand bed put down and use at least 1lb of live rock per gallon. I'd also wait a few months to put any livestock in.

There are several fish that are bred in captivity now, and there are also a few sources of rock that are mined from underground (ancient reef rock) that don't impact the ocean habitat.

Additionally, even the live rock pulled out of the ocean is almost always just rubble that has broken off the reef by storms and other natural erosion. I don't believe people are actually out there with hammers knocking off chunks of the existing reef.

+Nature's Finest mollies cannot sustain the saltwater environment for more than a few months. And they have made leaps and bounds about having the animals grown in a man made hatchery. It all just depends on what you buy. There are many laws and regulations when it comes to collecting live specimens. The more common the fish the higher the chances of having a home grown fish. Clowns are almost always bred in captivity. Start with those other than mollies, and corrals are typically fragged over and over again. This makes it more sustainable.

yeah a lot of the animals is taken from the ocean. including the rock which also destroys there habitat. I did not know this when I started that they caught and took almost everything from the wild. very few fish are actually bred (if that's how you spell it) and inverts (corals ext.) might be fragged (again maybe spelt wrong). but so much is from the wild for that supply. which is why I will put mollies in mine. I already have things growing and some fish but no more taking from the reefs. only home made rocks

I had a saltwater tank for years man and used mb7, all his phytoplankton series my corals loved it , reef code a and b, vitamin c, coral amino, bio fuel, and his lugol's and coral restor , his products are by for out of everyone else's league.

Love me some salties! I like the direction this guy takes. The thing about him saying to wait six months before adding inverts is becuase around 6 months most people grasp what they are doing with the tank and what it takes to have inverts...

never used continuum but brightwell products are the best and I have used many others, they are more consistent through each product.
