Nice video but I have never questioned if they put something living in it. But if it was alive buy the time I buy it. Ok you proved that. Something was living in it. But did he lab find any that died? And if so what percentage was dead? And I am still looking for the names of the three bacteria that do all this wonderful work for me. But that is kind of dead information that nobody seems to use. This is old. But you never know where you are going to find what your looking for.

Each company create various strains of bacteria, it is generally their secret otherwise people can manufacture their products. It's no different than cooking food and putting it in the fridge. It doesn't kill the bacteria as such but put them into a dormant state and they will activate once put into the right conditions. If you take out food and leave it at room temp, it will decay very quickly. Once this bacteria hits the saltwater at the right temp and salinity, it will activate them and they will start to multiply with a nutrition source.

the bacteria is not stored in glass or water is stored in the rock or sand

Thanks for doing that. You can read for hours on forums about this product as to whether it has anything in it, and its benefit to a tank. Thanks again!

Did any of the labs give you Genus- or species-level info? If so, could you please post it? I am curious about what's actually in the product and if it could be cultured easily.

Great work!  I work for a major pharmaceutical company where we perform culture and analysis of bacteria, and your methods were spot-on for the type of sampling that can be performed in a non-lab environment.  I use MB7 in my reef tanks when appropriate, but have only been able to observe effectiveness through observation and empirical evidence. It was nice to see someone take a scientific approach to it.  As for the naysayers who question how bacteria could possibly survive in a bottle, a little digging online can show you that bacteria are one of the most resilient and versatile organisms on Earth, and can survive in many of the most extreme and inhospitable conditions the planet has to offer, even frozen solid.  A few months in a bottle is like a ride on a cruise ship compared to what many of them can handle.  Again, great job!

We set out to prove 1# if the product really is full of live bacteria? Yes it is, and the bacteria we know based on the cultures. Your right anaerobics didnt grow. We set out to prove 2# can it last longer then 24 hours in an aquarium? Yes it can. We did get quantity results but off blood plates after it had been incubated also we did not type the different species of bacillus that were cultured for we dont have endless budgets but feel free to re-due this experimentif you like=)

Hi there, in your video you commented that the bacteria culture had a high density rate but didnt mention how many types were found. It seem like there was only one type. The product is supposed to have multiple strains including an anerobic type, which you mention there were none. So, yes its great that there were a high rate of living bacteria, but does the product contain all that it says it contains?

Very good suggestion but hard to science-wise measure the success. I have thought about how to prove it continues to be of benefit other then my success and opinion and its really hard to prove without two identical systems

Hi there Reefdvm great work on this video - keep em coming. Now I have a suggestion for you in regards to the product you are reviewing. Now you have it down to a science. You've proven that the bacteria is alive in the bottle and that it can stay alive for x amount of time in a saltwater aqaurium. Now can you examine how well the product works? How well will the cycle go? Anyways, I'm getting tired so I'm off to the races. If you could it would be very interesting to see how it all pans out!

We would have liked to quantitative that more but due to cost issues and such we were very pleased to see the heavy growth and consistent growth on each plate. So the baseline tank plates were close to negative, and the reports via the labs on the plates after the adding the product were very consistent with no major contamination, which to us was pleasing to us. We still use this product weekly and love it.
ReefDVMs
ReefDVMs - 12 years ago
The tank was bleached and RO DI water with salt via reef crystals was added to the tank then we plated, the result on those ten plates were 8 negative and to with growth, one was malazzeia and another was I think bacis cocci areobic growth and since not consisent we assume containinated some how. As far as after we added the product, all the plates grew a group of bacillus bacteria.
