Our bristleworms and Mama Mia Worms are active detritivores that move through the sandbed consuming detritus and other forms of organic matter as they go. The organic matter is converted to living tissue rather than decomposing into forms that could pollute the seawater. As they travel through the sandbed, ReefWorms create beneficial burrows and channels in the sand. This helps keep the sand grains loosely packed and aerobic, preventing the formation of anaerobic dead zones. Their function is much like that of earthworms in terrestrial gardens. ReefWorms will reproduce in your aquarium. They will not overpopulate the tank because they will eventually become food- and space-limited. I have a ton of this bristle worms and never harm any of my coral,fish, even my clams.

Bristle worms are not good for your tank because they eat your corals especially star polyps and other leather type corals.

Those are a different type of worms known as "fireworms" that are related to bristleworms. Bristleworms usually have part of their body grayish-silverish as where fireworms are completely fire red and have a toxin in their bristles that when released feels like that body part is on fire.

I have a deep sand bed on a 45 gallon cube. How many Mama Mia worms should I start with? I already have a very good self sustaining population of bristle worms.

have you guys ever considered using other animals that serve a similar purpose? sea cucumbers can be just as beneficial without all the negative side effects that come with bristleworm such as the fact that they will over populate reeftanks, they slowly consume the inside of live rock which weakens you aquascape and will breed by the thousands. once they over populate, they will irritate the skin of you eels and fish while they sleep and even your own when working on your aquarium.

I would personally cycle your tank first, and see how many hitchhiking worms you have when it is fully complete. They usually only come out at night and are hard to see. If you don't have many I would add some. 535 is a massive size tank, so I would personally add around 50, because once you start adding/ feeding fish, there population will explode like crazy. Just remember you can always add more but if there population explodes they can be kinda hard to remove.

@DanteJoseCuervo you will find that about 90% of worms are mistaken for fireworms, and are actualy safe for aquaria, very few are a threat to corals.
