Nice. But the fish look a bit stressed. They keep chasing and attacking one another.

Where are all your awesome vids Shardy? No new vids for a while. Which size chiller did you end up going for? Dd750?

i may have in the past but not quite sure how i lost s few. I have a large fire shrimp living in there now for around a year so i guess the rule is make sure the shrimp is big!

Hi Shardy, do you have problems with your shrimps and your flame hawk fish? As I would love to have both... many thanks and great videos please please keep them coming :)

Great update Shardy, tank is looking awesome. I also have a moorish idol for about 7 months now and he is fat and happy. I found mixing garlic with the food really keeps him in good shape, His never been sick since day one. The brand i use is - Seachem Garlic guard. Just place frozen square block into a small container and add enough garlic to cover it. Give it about 30mins and feed. they go crazy for it. Hope that helps Sydney, A

wise words! lps hate that and i couldnt keep them before. chiller is stability and thats what these tanks need ;)
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
well i actually built mine that high to accommodate a hole that was already there in my kitchen so i had to go that height. I wouldn't want to bend over to look into my tank but that's just my preference. If you have a pelmet to house your lighting and cover the top then i guess it really is up to you. You will most likely have to stand on something to get to the bottom of the tank anyway but just make sure that it is easy access! that is the most important thing!

I had good air circulation with 4 4 inch fans under my hood but chiller is definitely the way to go. I'm fighting heat waves now and getting emails from the Apex regularly. Mushrooms adapt but LPS take a beating

Shardy thanks for the reply. Another quick question. I note your cabinet was 40" high. I plan to do the same but after talking to custom builder, said the finished aquarium looks funny and very high/diff to maintain as need stepladder. I will be having 30" high tank with 16" pelmet (to house LEDs and allow accessibility). What are your experiences?

What works for you mate... you could go down the road of finding moisture resistant computer sized fans but if they're that rarely needed then what's the worry? Keep up the good work... and don't forget the vids for the gear junkies ;)

my kids need a bit more training on that ;) agreed and yes it does but I am pretty stuck for room in the sump and dont really want to put fans over the tank. The chiller is peace of mind for me but yes as with most things in this game, it comes with a price ;)
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
yeah, I tend to agree as water changes don't seem to give me any benefits. Do you run a deep sand bed?
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
I did a fair bit and ended up going for a d and d 750 simply because I have a mate who runs it on a similar size tank and has had no problems. I also nought my skimmer from d and d and know they do quality stuff. Not cleaned my skimmer pump since I bought it 18 months ago and it still runs like the day I bought it!

Best use for the kids I've found so far... Although 'fetch daddy another towel for the fish tank son' also is a firm favourite... Doesn't the GHL have the ability to control fans for temp management? Just a thought as a fan is MUCH cheaper to run than a chiller... The chiller then becomes the backup for those extra toasty days when a fan just won't cut it ;)

I hear you there about heat waves a few years ago it got to 45c for a week hear in Australia and even with air conditioning it didn't change a thing and pretty much lost everything

Shardy, awesome tank, sorry to hear you lost some corals. I'm based in UK too. Was bloody hot! I lost a hammer, and elegance too during the heat wave. Glad you didn't give up. Am planning a new tank too, which chiller would you recommend? I'm guessing you did loads of research beforehand!

its a Keyhole Angel, (Centropyge tibicen) They are a type of pygmy angel and they totally reef safe and don't grow very big.

cheers mate! I agree it is possible to be ok without a chiller in the UK but I am convinced that all the corals will do better with one.
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
not at all! IMO people are over careful about angels and reefs, I have had a queen and an African and neither of them have touched the corals. If they are used to eating fish foods and you keep them well fed im sure most of them would be fine!
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago

cheers mate, i was considering doing something like that but I had to go away for a few days and didn't want to risk lowering it to have it spike up again! Good move on the Robinsons though ;)
shardinio
shardinio - 11 years ago
Thanks man! Agreed, but If you live in Greenland and always keep your room temp constant there would be no need but if you want to keep your room temp higher or live somewhere prone to heat waves then a chiller is a must! More vids on the way ;)

love ur tank and it sucks about the corals dying i had the same problem at one point cause i also live in the uk once the temp was up to 32 degrees Celsius which is really high, lucky i had no corals at the time but I'm lucky because i have a big window near the tank with blackout blinds which i open and it keeps the tank at a stable temperature only sometimes going over 26 degree. btw great update and hope the Moorish keeps going strong.

Good to see you back mate... I lost a few to the heat but with no space for a chiller had to resort to frozen Robinsons bottles and a big fan in the sump.. Worked a treat! Looks great do keep doing what your doing ;-)
