With 3 tanks. 150G, 50G, 75G. When I got to 25,000 I stopped counting. I would say 30,000 easy.

Total 300 gallons, for filling that with coral it'll take lots of patience and money to pay for those crazy espensive frags.

i just got back in after breaking down a 55 and 20 2 years ago for a move and not setting them back up. trying out the nano side of things for now. So far I'm at almost 1100 for an 8 gal JBJ rimless, one AI prime light and stand, rock, sand, etc... I'm waiting to add an MP10 for when I add some sps. thall be another 240-300 bux. I almost went with the jbj 45 gal. i can already feel myself wanting to go for it anyway. maybe next year. your tank looks great. very clean, not over crowded. good job

He just has lots of corals and a sump. You can get a 40 gallon all-in-one plus stand for 700 and lights for 200 ish. His coral frags were dumb expensive though, where I live (in Florida) a Frag goes for like 15 bucks. You can also frag corals and trade with other hobbyists to expand your coral collection.
Adam Steerment
Adam Steerment - 7 years ago
You made boy! My reef set up has cost me £530 so far, about half way need to drop another £600 in it then it's done. That's around $1400 with out stock, with what I'm looking at will be another $200... either America is expensive which I doubt seeing as the UK has some of the heighest taxes in the world lol or you got ripped of lad

really nice tank but I would recommend buying from the forums or others in the hobby because you're paying way over retail on the majority of the live stalk. The dry equipment was really cheap at least.

If you know what you’re doing right away, and don’t mind waiting for things to grow. You can cut down that cost to a couple hundred. I’ve built nano’s that cost $500, and also 200 gallon salt tanks for under $700. Do your research and be patient with this hobby.

What about live rock? At least in my country it’s very expensive. Around 40-50 usd per kg.
Aleksander Kelairam
Aleksander Kelairam - 7 years ago
Inappropriate Reefer I forgot to check the currency status so right now it’s 30-40 usd per kg. But normally when our currency is stronger it’s more like 40-50. I have a 275 liter tank and I got around 30 kg live rock now. Expensive but definitely worth it!

Just picked up a Nuvo fusion 20 with skkye lights, cycled live sand and about 20-25lbs. Of cultured LR.
Currently at Petco and thinking of grabbing about 50.00-75.00 worth of livestock.
170.00cdn paid for the complete running set-up I have a buddy owing me some nice pieces of softies since I gave him a bunch when I previously shutdown.
So looking at 250.00 max

I would say that most reef tanks average about $50-$100 per gallon is a fair rule. That varies widely on the types of corals and fish and equipment and so on. Over 5 years, I spent about $8000 on my 55 gallon. So I wouldn't feel too bad lol.

You forgot the most expensive part, "Your Time & energy".

My first 3,6 12 months is my learning period with trial & error with properly cycling a tank to easily overstocking to mixingq incompatible fish. Begginer mistakes that are very costly, say you make $10 an hour, I put in 25-30 hours per week or 2-4 hours a day on YouTube learning hobby & equipnent.
So, $200-400 weekly going on months in the beginning.

But if you don't count your personal time invested & many trips back & forth between home & aquarium store burning gas.

Priceless!

I'm just imagining the incredible freshwater tank I could have for $4K. Where I live, ironically by the ocean, a marine tank would be impossible. No resources near here and LFS is two hours and a ferry ride one way. Beautiful nano tank you have and worth every penny if it makes you happy.

I have a friend that basically gave me all my stuff, including the tank, and the corals and anemone. I feel ashamed of all the money I have saved, it doesn't feel real. I feel like I am babysitting her tank lol because the money she spent on my tank if more than I spent it doesn't feel like my tank even though it is in my house. Nothing has died in there though, aside from what my fishes murdered. Total I probably spent like $200. I've probably spent more money on my freshwater tank which is crazy. Your 40G is super gorgeous though. I hope mines going to look as great as yours one day. I'm taking it slowly so I can spend enough time researching and learning. I'm a slow learner and I don't want anybody to suffer because of my fumbles.

OK to be honest I didn't wrote a number down but I was around 3200-3500 with a little 500$ put on for some nick necks ! But boy oh boy. I'm so glad I'm a different reefers and I keep only Freshies not salties for this exact reason why. The cost. Many things I can make for what I need to cut the cost and the maintenance and the feeding almost pennies. When the salties you always need to test the salt contents when making water for them and all the salt mixes that is a constant expense and food that you can't make like we do to the fresh water fishes. From the mosquito larvae to daphnia worms and tubifex and grindal and micro and bloodworms and many more just to name a few. For salties you have to give them salt water foods. Between the salt water and the fresh water set up the salt water is at least 10x more money and expenses are constant. So yes fish keeping or aquarium keeping is luxury hobby for the rich. Well not for poor people for sure ! Like my very first 5 liter pickle jar with some local fish fry and some rock and sand from the playground and the hornworth as plant cause in the local pond had some and a few little snails and feeding them with breadcrumbs. lol Anyways 5000 $ That is just crazy ! Put me down for none and stick with my freshies ! lol But nice set up and tank and your girls too ! Hey I'm single ! lol

Wow, 4924$ is a lot of money, but if you think about it, if you keep it for 5 years thats 984$/year, which is 82$/month or 2.74$/day. How much does a starbucks coffee cost? About that much. I prefer having an awesome 45G reef aquarium in my home than having a starbucks coffee every day. It's really all about what you value more and spending on what you actually like. Saving is really powerful haha.

And that's just a starbucks coffee, what about a starbucks coffee, a few chocolate bars, a pack of cigarettes and a bag of chips? Many people buy that every day and don't think they are spending that much money, where I live that would cost about 8$ a day, that's 14,600$ in 5 years. You can get a really decent tank with that money.

My newest build for just a couple of designer clowns which I paid $750 each for 9 years ago not included in price, and I don't count my LR, coral, substrate, RODI unit, salt, etcetera ...just dropped $4,000 on equipment alone, and its a 65g low iron tank...furniture grade stand, Radion XR30 Get 4 Pro, Trigger system sump, Gyre 230, trigger water T/O box, smart ATO, Newest Tunze Protein skimmer and newest Tunze return pump, with so much more I won't go any further is for 2 fishes, and only the two fishes...many of us run multiple tanks for the obvious reasons...of full reef, mixed, FOWLR which is my 375g tank at ~ $20 grand not including the L/S one of which is a A+++ Black tang for $2900.00 haha...I spend ~$12,000 in supplies a year...your stuff is nice for sure, but it is mid line, so yeah...I agree, yours is not priced out too bad.

I spent about $800 in my 6g and 15g tanks. Both of them crashed before putting livestock, lol. Both of them were full of dinoflagellates (or however that's spelled) and I broke them down. Good part is: I can now set up a 38g almost for free. I got a skimmer for tanks up to 40g for my 15g, the pumps of my 6g and 15g together are enough for a 38g, I got a Chinese blackbox for my 15g that can easily be used for the 38g. So yeah, just need a couple pounds of rock and plumbing supplies.

Biggest money savior is used equipment,I bought some of my stuff for 1/3 of the price because they were working for only a few months!
D G
D G - 7 years ago
Good job remembering all that stuff. this is just setup costs for everything you currently have now right? otherwise you would add all the salt you had to buy and all the media you had to buy.
I think i come in close to your costs, but everything is alot more expensive here in australia.

lol. You forgot about the sand and salt and rocks. I have 2 tanks. my 20 gallon has been up for 4 years and that has cost around 6k. My 100G is somewhere around 15k. These are very rough numbers because I try not too keep track. I think if I did I would end up going crazy, because I definately wouldn't give up this hobby for anything. Now that I think a tad harder it could be more because my gem tang was 2,500. lol

I got a 44 UK gallon 1m tank and it's cost me just shy of £5k GBP £300 was in losses.

Biggest cost was 800 for lighting with bracket arms. $2500 just to get a cycled tank under $2500 seems about right. And the same for livestock. Better than a TV

how much were the sand and rock?
gord oland
gord oland - 7 years ago
Sounds right. I think there was also substrate, salt, media, test and measuring equipment and a whole bunch of little things here and there from the hardware store, big box store or dollar store. If you really want to scare yourself add electricity costs and add the gas costs for mileage from the numerous trips to the store. :D

Of course this is a fun hobby. Many of the costs are initial costs and over the years will divide itself out!
