lmao I am so jealous. In BC Canada your lucky to find a small frag under $100.00 everything is so expensive. so people sell from there tanks to help people get in the hobby.

i think i need to do more research on that box in the sump who to swap water. i think its just Refugium full of life. i think if we can figure out to avoid these frequent water changes this hobby can grow further.

berny's reef no need for an expensive denitrificator imo.
there are far easier ways to manage nitrate and phospate. for example adding a Carbon source , and thus greatly increasing denitrifying bacteria , adding bacteria cultures if necessary.

I use macro algae and skimmer as my only ways of nutrient export, and I have 0 measurable nitrate/phospate. without Ever doing a WC.

but again, that's my opinion ,to each his ways ;)

Yeah it seems germany is very advanced in the hobby, the problem is they don't make too many videos explaining how their tanks work and such, probably because they have a smaller audience if they make them in german.

But DSR reefing is making your own salt and advanced supplementing to replace everything your corals take from the water, that's not what this guy is using, he uses natureef, denitrifying bacteria that he adds dayly and feeds with tank water. http://natureef.com/products/denitrifiers/

How do you run a tank without water change? does he add anything to replenish the minerals?
berny's reef
berny's reef - 4 years ago
He uses denitrifying bacteria to clean it, he probably uses this:

http://natureef.com/products/denitrifiers/

He would have to dose otherwise he would run out of many essential minerals in the water, there is a system that calculates how much you need to add of each mineral to keep it in balance, it's called DSR.

+Franklin Michael Not phyto - it's Natureef - denitrifying bacteria http://natureef.com/products/denitrifiers/ i've been looking at doing a DIY system - you need a large colony of bacteria and the ability to feed it in a separate tank. Then swap
some of the water out to the reef system daily.

ThomasVisionReef - 6 years ago
When I move out of this house one day I will get a bigger tank probably a 300 Gallon Shallow. However, my new tank needed to have the same foot print as my 150 Gallon and that is why I got the 90 gallon. It is shallow and has the same foot print as the 150 gallon so it can fit in the same space. We don't have anywhere else to put a tank in our house.

Are you going to be running an Aqua Medic Acone 1.5? I have one running in combination with a huge metal halide powered algal turf on a 75 great skimmer very efficient compared to its foot print wise. Had a minor pump issue at first Aquamedic immediately ordered me a new pump. Great customer service. I would reccomend fully taking it apart and reassembling it so it is easier to trouble shoot any problems you have down the road.
ThomasVisionReef

Hey Jack, I am not sure of the one I have is the 1.5. A lot of thr stuff they gave me is not available in the United States and will be debuting on my tank. I will have more Info this Thursday when the unboxing videos come out. Great advice though!

+akhurash Yeah I am really looking forward to this shallow depth. If you have imagination I think any size tank can be extraordinary.
akhurash

I figured it had something to do with the height, lol. I build the stand and canopy for my current tank (55 gallon standard) and I hate it. I made the stand too tall and I'm a short guy, so hard to clean and maintain the tank. Also 55 gallon is too narrow for a saltwater in my opinion (if you have live rock and what not) because it doesn't give much depth to the tank. I'm planning on upgrading to a 75 or 90 gallon tank. I too can't get a tank longer than 4ft, :(. Or else I might've gotten 120 or something.
ThomasVisionReef
ThomasVisionReef - 6 years ago
Hey Akhurash, I've had a lot of tanks. I am sure I will have a lot more lol. My 150 Gallon High/Tall tank was too tall/deep (from top to bottom) for me. This go around I really want to be able to easy get my hands in the tank. So I wanted something shallow. I would have gotten a 200 or 300G shallow but that would of had to be a long tank and I do not have the room in this house for a tank over 4 feet long. So once we move I will most likely go bigger again.
