REST IN TINY PIECES!!!
REST IN TINY PIECES!!! - 6 years ago
BulkReefSupplyCom hey brother,I have a question for u,I have a 75 gallon main tank and a 29 gallon sump, its been set up now for 3 years,I decided that I am gonna reef this momster out. I got a bunch of SPS & LPS and They have been in my tank now all 16 frags for about 3 months. All my perimeters are good. I run 2 65 super skimmers, and made my own filter systems with carbon pads & rocks in a bag, plus ammonia pads, shit load of brillo pads, and other bio plastics, and it keeps my tank perfect, alot of water movement and alot of care and time spent on this. But about 2 weeks ago,Oh sorry I do water changes once a week and use my favorite salt mix Reef crystals but tha last past couple of weeks,I've noticed a sweet smell. When I got my Rare SPS & LPS that was tiny coral frag pieces,I mean tiny and paid alot for them, and with in 3 months they pretty much x5 in size like really took off and when I first got them and As I was opening tha little bags up to place all of them in a 5 gallon bucket to drip them and dip I notice a very strong sweet smell when I touched them and heard about this and it was nothing to stress about cause they have that smell, but now when I do my water changes, and switch out tha filter guts, tha water smells very heavy like sweet fruit, and tha filter pads man damn its strong, really strong but it smells like some exotic fruit u would be eating sittin on tha beach with some hot exotic chick...
Now,I haven't found 1 damn thing on tha internet ABOUT a sweet smell besides 1 little thing about sps do smell like that after being handled. All are very bright, beautiful colored, but issue I had today was my Frogspawn wasn't out,and it look bad it was almost all tha way in but still had alittle bit sticking out and I know its not a good sign,I just can't figure out why this smell is so strong, why my frogspawn that I love is now lookin like I need to get a handicapped sign saying almost dead park here after death....sighing,its really not funny cause I am pissed and no,all my RRBTA,MY DUNCAN'S AND FROGSPAWNs are in there own space, and dont have no contact with each other.my Duncan christ it already grew 5 extra heads, and tha Duncan,RRBTA and frogspawn all eat ,I feed them 1x every 2 to 3 weeks and they are beautiful. I did read up on tha pods u get in that little half clear half aluminum bag to feed to ur blennys etc u guys sell these and state that these pods if u open it and it smells like somethin sweet oceaniieee lolol that its good, but no rotten smell. Well Ive had good pods never no bad ones and my tank some what smells like those did just x10. I only smell it though when a water change happens or filter switch out. If i walk over to my tank now it has no damn smell,or if I move my SPS or should say touch them, I smell it strong. Is this normal for to have that smell like this on changes??? Or am I missing somethin that can cause issues later. I am truly stumped and Have never had this smell in any of my other tanks in tha past.
It just makes sense that if ur pod bag needs to smell good, and all fruity Pebbles and its a very good sign, then Ur sps,lps if smelled like that is good too RIGHT!!!???
Lololol I truly feel like a beginner here even tho Ive had all this for a very long time. Maybe Ive had this smell before and just never noticed it. My wife after a water change today, said:OH GOD,U CUTTING UP FRUIT OR HAVE FRUIT IN UR BUCKETS??! I SAID NO WHY??? She said it is really strong like a sweet exotic smell.
And I haven't put pods in my tank in almost 5 months cause I had so many. So any ideas,am I in tha GOOD or tha OH SHIT,UR DREAM OF EXOTIC FRUIT,GIRLS AND THA BEACH IS OVER,and all u got in REALITY is 4 kids,a wife whom complains 99.9% of tha day and u put a extra spair puff tha state marshmallow man jelly roll on ur waist...GET UP AND EXERCISE WITH HEAD PHONES ON NOW...OR GET EXTRA $1'S AND GO TO THA STRIP CLUB CAUSE UR IN A MESS!!!???????????
Tell me what u think, master jeti??? Thanks my friends, happy new year to u and all out there...
Blessed be...

I've just brought a mars aqua light for my tank. 300w. has duel spectrum and just blue light which you can turn up and down. I have the duel spec on half way and the blue on 3 quarters of the way. would this be right? having more blue in the day than the duel spec? then on the evening I use just blue for a couple of hours before the light goes off

Hey there! Unfortunately we haven't tested or tried that specific brand of light and what spectrum/PAR it produces at each setting. We just wouldn't have any valuable information to offer here, however you may want to browse the reef hobbyist forums like Reef2Reef.com and ReefCentral.com to see if there are other reefers out there that utilize the same light and what they use for settings. :-)

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
I would expect the A160s to be nearly half the PAR and intensity than the A360s, in which case only two over that tank may be a bit underpowered. Check out these videos we did on the A360 and you may get a better idea of what you need for your tank. :-)

Y'all should check out the Hipargero 30 w led coral growth light. Really awesome better than the A80 in my opinion. It's only 60 dollars right now on amazon. I have the link in my video along with a review. I am not getting paid I am just trying to spread the word because it actually works unlike current or some other overly priced light. Now these light are meant for nano tanks it's max effective depth they recommend is about 19.5 inches deep. It is actually awesome go check em out. I am down for being a guanine pig for this.

BulkReefSupplyCom

I imagine the most effective option for coral health and growth would be an LED that can produce a more full spectrum, which may be more than just a white or blue LED but may also include various blues, red, green, UV, white etc. :-)

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
I would say that it is too under powered for an SPS dominate tank and the Hydra 56 would be a much better fit. :-) Keep your eye out on our channel for the upcoming videos. We are testing LED lights and providing PAR values and recommendations for how to implement them on an SPS dominate tank. We haven't got to the Hydras just yet. ;-)

Lol 20 gallon reef light for 133$ come on BRS you can buy abi tuna blue bulb with the fixture for it for only 61$ its 23 watts they even come in larger watts. It's a nice powerful light and it's not expensive. There's even ones cheaper than that I feel like big time reef companies just suggest the expensive crap when you can buy stuff just as good but half the price. Don't get me Wrong I love BRStv but I just don't like videos like this (my opinion).
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
The ones in this video are absolutely not the only options out there and there are some pretty great looking and successful tanks that use more cost effective lighting than these. We carefully select the reef gear we bring in and out of the ones that we have thoroughly reviewed, these were our thoughts. Hopefully someday down the road we can give a thorough evaluation of every light option out there, but unfortunately our bandwidth and budget won't allow that right now. :-)

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
Sure you could, however you may find that it shadows quite a bit near the edges. The Hydra 26 spread is really geared toward 18" or less, but you could spread it a bit further by raising it higher above the tank. With the 40B being 36", you may find that a single Hydra 26 is pretty lacking. :-)

I was wondering if anyone has used any off road led lights on their reef aquariums? Also i was wondering if its possible to have too much light in your aquarium? You can get nilight led light bars on amazon for cheap I have two 7 inch 32watt ones on my truck and you can buy a 32inch 180 watt for about $40 the downside is they run off 12volt DC.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
Those are very interesting approaches to lighting a reef tank! Most of the inhabitants we house in our aquariums require a specific lighting spectrum and even more specific intensities. The LED fixtures in our market are designed to control these aspects for healthier, thriving reef tanks. There disadvantages in having too much light in the tank, which usually manifests itself in nuisance algae problems or bleach/dead corals. :-)

I guess those sunrise and sunset effects are not worth spending somuch, thrn comes the brand. best option is diy using 10/20/30/50w cob led with driver or use cree leds. even many have grows sps corals under gu10 bulbs at 24" height. iv been using led flood lights and now cob leds 20000k with blue and uv since many years and have grown almost everything under them. just that it doesnt have those sunrise sunset thing. also i keep them on only for 5 to max 6hrs, never had any algae issue too.

There are some companies emerging from the no name black boxes to being named black boxes now.
And they are pretty cheap and come with 3 year warranties.
It about time because I've been sick of the car down payment lights!
Some of us are on a tight budget and $500-700 is extremely hard to justify it worth every penny just to feed are passion of this beautiful hobby.
That isn't business it greed.
I know pricing on components I build and repair computers there no reason they should charge that much for a light...

i was thinking of getting a kessil a360 wide for a new 30x30x24 cube build, aiming for just a few sps such as (monties n birdsnest) but mostly lps and softies. think that'll be enough coverage for me?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
Although a single Kessil A360 has enough output to sufficiently light a tank that deep, it is the limited spread that may be an issue. For a fuller coverage with an even PAR spread across the tank, you may find that two Kessil A360s would serve you better. Supplementing with T5s does help solve that potential issue as well!

I consider myself fairly well researched but there is particularly one concept that has been escaping me for some time that I'd love the BRS team to explain. Parameters, specifically alkalinity, calcium, magnesium and their relationship with nutrients - phosphate and nitrate. It was first brought to my attention through Red Sea's reef care program, that one can prioritize coral growth OR color by simply manipulating the above 5 parameters to higher or lower levels respectively. My question for you is to explain the implications of running a reef system with either elevated or low range nutrients and carbonate - and additionally if there is truly a middle ground where one can experience long term success balancing both. Furthermore, I'd like to hear what the BRS team has had most success with and what risks and volatility issues may be associated - as with ULNS and coral starvation for example. Thank you very much for all your hard work on BRStv!

I just went to my local marine fish store/farm/distributor and saw LEDs which were dirt cheap for the quality. They are bright and pretty damn well made. But they're a China brand. It was 125 bucks in my currency which is only about 35USD but I got 20 bucks off cause I go there often and I asked for a cheaper price and since the light isn't branded by some big company they agreed to give me a cheaper price. Thought maybe 5 bucks off but got 20 bucks off. So I only paid 105 bucks for it. But I bought the one for a nano tank so the light is only a foot long. The bigger ones are about 100 USD which is about 400 bucks in my currency. Still a veryyy good deal here tho. Apparently they are one of the best lights they have there which are very underrated due to it being a China brand.

I use 4x80w T5 and 4 54W E27 LED Coral Reef on my 160gallon reef. This gives you a great light but not much control. But the E27 comes at 20$ each. Could be great if BRS could do a review on the E27, I terms of par.
W C
W C - 7 years ago
Keep in mind guys that BRS only stocks items that they trust. Yeah there might be ultra cheap chinese LEDs on Amazon but if BRS doesn't trust it I don't trust it. That's why I shop at BRS - I know if they carry it, its a good product that they trust. Besides going ultra cheap in reef tanks never works out in the long run.
John Donahue
John Donahue - 7 years ago
I get the sentiment of ultra cheap means likely to break, but there are ways you work around that. In fact a whole lot of us already do this with a certain critical and failure prone piece of equipment in our tanks: heaters. We run multiple undersized heaters so that when one fails it can't bake or freeze the tank alone. They are cheap enough you can keep extra heaters on hand, and can swap and test them occasionally to catch failures you might otherwise miss with this method.

You can do the same with the black boxes. You can buy an extra (heck, 3 extras at the prices in this video and still come out ahead...), and its pretty damned obvious when your tank lights fail, and a failing light isn't going to crash your tank anywhere close to the rate that a broken heater can.

If you have a softie and LPS tank and are on a budget, Current USA Orbit IC LED fixtures are a great option. They're sleek, programmable, already come with mounting arms and will grow corals for between $170 (2ft tank) and $250 (4ft tank). I know BRS doesn't sell them but they should be in any conversation of reefing on a budget, especially since they're part of Current's Loop system, which combines lighting and flow. BTW $700 for two Hydras is NOT reefing on a budget. If you're willing to spend that amount, might as well put the extra $100 for two Radion XR15s and get a lighting that is top notch and can grow SPS corals in a 4ft tank.

if the criteria is cheap, which is the objective of the video, then all these lights in the video are not cheap. you can find black box LED lights, which a lot of reefers use, cheaper than any of the options in this video. sometimes BRS just have to be real by stating that these are the cheapest light that they sell. also, saying that you have not heard of these black LED boxes is almost ludicrous. Not hating on BRS as I shop there frequently but this video is misleading.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
I have to agree we could have ironed out the concept and title better. The options we presented are the lights the team here uses themselves and amongst the lowest cost of those options but there is cheaper gear out there for sure. I have to admit until the last couple weeks I had no idea that this volume of reefers is considering direct from China imports for their homes. For a while there we were ordering a lot of these pumps and similar products attempting to identify if they were ready for US distribution and there was always a disturbing amount of quality and safety issues we just stoped. Maybe it is time to take a renewed look.

It's a real shame you decided to ignore the light that was most requested by the community - 165W chinese black boxes. half the comments on the previous video asked about that light. The problem is, when people realize they can grow sps under $100 lights they will stop spending money on this over-rated features and brands... oh well... I'll just spend my extra money on more corals... cheers.

Roi - 7 years ago
Jared G yea eventually everyone has their own reasons... I have a couple of red 20W LED flood lights lighting my algae scrubber... these flood lights are also quite cheap and are built very strong... But if you have something that works thats great.... I know it would not be an easy task for BRS to stock these kind of lights... but where there is problems there is opportunity... also I strongly believe that cost is a limiting factor for our hobby... It wants to grow but it needs lower prices!
IronChefItaly
IronChefItaly - 7 years ago
Fair points. I'm currently using a chinese 65W glow led fixture for my refugium. Ordered it for $65 from amazon and it showed up in an unlabeled box with no instructions or papers of any kind. It was recommended to me and after 6 months of use I have to say it was a fantastic buy but I'd never trust a similar product to light my reef. To each their own.
Roi
Roi - 7 years ago
Jared G when you consider cost and performance... you are only considering production cost. If you'll consider the management, marketing, taxes, salaries, warranties, support... and many more other costs... It's pretty easy to understand how they do it cheaper... The real reason I believe suppliers don't sell it because they probably can't get it at a lower cost then an ebay customer and they have to make a profit.. also they want to have support in case one broke on a client (which happens to the highest-cost brands as well). I really think the finished product is probably a bit less high-quality but not at all worth the price difference. The only thing I'm sacrificing is the warranty... And even if I have to buy a new one It'll still be cheaper...
IronChefItaly
IronChefItaly - 7 years ago
I think you're missing the point. If you're at all familiar with computer components then it should be easy to understand the balance between cost, performance and failure rates. I'm going to be be quite general in addressing the black boxes and similar unbranded products from china but to fairly evaluate them consider the how. How can they manage to build lighting fixtures that are truly equal for a far cheaper price? Well that was already answered, the manufacturer often doesn't stand behind their product and they rely on bulk sales rather than a loyal following. In other words, the fixtures are designed to compromise safety and reliability for seemingly adequate performance. I am aware that some people have had great success with them (albeit usually with the help of a solder), but I also know of people who have storage boxes full of dead dismembered "black boxes". For those reasons, no US retailer who holds any pride in their reputation is going to sell a product with dismal failure rates - hence ebay and amazon.
Roi
Roi - 7 years ago
First of all, I really appreciate the honest reply. I didn't think I'd get any. But it really shouldn't be an issue... they are made in a factory providing these lights to several people who white-label it. However, if you can order enough (and we both know you can) then They will be happy to make the changes needed. These are good high quality lights. if you disregard the fancy features they really are sps-rated. I'm sure that to make them "brs-spec" worthy will take some changes but not that drastic as you might think... Even if the end price is $200. I would probably buy it just to have your logo and warranty... I think the main issue here that a lot of people in the Industry thinks that they make a lot of money because the hobby is expensive, but they don't realize they would make a lot more money if it was a cheap hobby because a lot more people would do it. I bet you that sales from dog collars alone are a lot more then our entire Industry... and dog collars are cheap.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
As to stocking them. I think that's a longer road. Behind the scenes there are very legit reasons why these products are sold only through eBay and amazon. The biggest one is they often don't meet western quality and safety standards so distributors are not willing to bring the line in. The manufactures only option is an attempt to sell direct via eBay and such. So for us we pride ourselves on "carefully selected products" which in some ways means best for your reef tank and wallet but behind that means it isn't going to break in 6 months and or burn down your house and put your family at risk. I am not going to make any specific claims on the "black box" other than we owe it to our customers to take their safety and value of their dollars seriously : )

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
Hi, this video was actually already produced before that one. I am fairly certain you will see the black box as part of the overall lighting series : )
Roi
Roi - 7 years ago
I'll take this a step further... all you have to do is figure out the place that makes these... (on ebay/amazon you'll find the same light under a lot of different brands) order a few with your specs on them, slap your logo and charge $150 or something reasonable. you already beat the market with your 2-part... It really will be a piece of cake for you to do it again with lighting. I hope someone reads this lol.

BulkReefSupplyCom you guys are awesome, but I think budget might mean taking those risks. Safe and good quality unfortunetly aren't concerns for many on budgets.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
I will openly admit that it has been very difficult finding affordable light sources which meet the criteria of what we want to offer to the BRS community. Either they are a billion dollars or they are so low cost that 50% breaking in a year or potentially losing a significant amount of PAR is acceptable. Thing is the moment BRS backs it by bringing it in the expectation will be that it is quality and will last. if we have to put in the product description this item is "sold as is" and doesn't have the same standards as the other items we sell it seems kind of silly to bring it in at all. It is a struggle for sure.

For a nano possibly AI prime or maxspect celestial, for 40-50 gallons ocean revive T-247 or Reefebreeder super lux. For dirt cheap, marsaqua or ebay chinese led. Just a tip for everybody who's using/planning to use the marsaqua: I replaced the original glass plate for a slightly frosted glass plate. This prevents the disco ball shadow effect and makes the colors blend better. You loose a bit of light intensity, but I was using it at 50% anyway, so it's worth it.
David Lacey
David Lacey - 7 years ago
Agreed. A lot of the "main brand" lights aren't made in the USA anyways. I've been running 3 evergrows (7' of tank) which is exactly the same as the mars aqua version for the last 3ish years. I originally had a bad blue side driver on 1 of the 3 units but they sent me a new one and it has worked ever since.

It would be awesome if BRS sold these lights or something equivalent. Don't get me wrong. I'd like to buy radions, but that's 3/4 the trip to sandals where I can go snorkeling and get the real deal. So less than $100 bucks per light and diy hanging canopy later and you can't tell the difference between them
ALP'ie
