HOW TO: Reduce Nitrates in a Reef Tank Without Water Changes

In this video we take a look at the Brightwell Aquatics Xport NO3 Brick and Bio Plate. In short, bacteria starts to grow it consumes nitrates and produces nitrogen gas and exits the aquarium in gas form. In turn you can reduce Nitrates in your saltwater aquarium without doing a water change. The Brightwell Aquatics Xport Brick and Plate is a great way to reduce nitrate and phosphate in your saltwater aquarium. I have a 4 inch and 1 inch marine pure block under my protien skimmer. Will this work? How long should it take been in about a week or 2 now but still around 40ppm

Absolutely, and that’s a great idea! I would do some water changes to aid in the reduction of no3. 40ppm is kinda high.

Thanks for making this video. We're starting our 1st build (90 gal display tank with 30 gal display refugium & 26 gal sump). Understanding that this is an affiliate company, we would still love to know the results of using these products. 1. These are supposed to be better than the Marinepure because they have the addition of sulfur, have a larger surface area and don't add aluminum to the system. Have you tested for any aluminum? 2. We've read in other forums that the NO3 Brick has bad tendency of breaking down into a mushy block that disperses murky coloring into the water if handled after a period of time. Is that true from your experience? 3. Did you any different or the same results from the Bio plate when handling it after it had been in the sump for a period of time? How long did you keep the brick & the plate in the sump? FYI... This company is only about 2 hours from our home so we would love to consider using their products as way to support the local business but that issue of breaking down and making the water cloudy disturbs me.

Can you put these in a HOB filter and can these bricks be used in fresh water tanks.
Mad Hatter's Reef

They have a cube version as well that could go in a media bag and be placed in a HOB. I could have sworn that this product could be used in freshwater as well but I can't find any information that supports that.

My tank is 110gallon. I have 2 NO3 bricks in my sump. My nitrates measure < 2 ppm. So Im pretty happy with them. I dont have them in a low flow area. I have them stuffed behind my socks in redsea 525XL. FYI they fit perfect. Thats why I got a second one.

In my experience, if your nitrates are off the chart you'll still need to do water changes to get them down quickly as it takes a little bit for the bacteria to do it and that's even if your dosing bacteria. Great video and great product once it's established.

Mad Hatter's Reef - 7 years ago
Agreed. I'm not trying to promote not doing water changes just informing people on the benefit of promoting anaerobic bacteria growth.
