Don't check salinity immediately after the salt is being added wait at least 15 minutes then check again by the way your system is just gorgeous and your redaction is awesome, all the best, good luck and happy reefing.

I use a canister filter filled with matrixcarbon, then a layer of GFO (aquavitro phosfiltrum), topped with a bigger chemipure bag (the regular stuff) for my return. Nothing I don't want will go from the sump up. My reactor runs chemipure blue and aquavitro purfiltrum (I know it's a redundancy). I clean the canister and change all carbons and other filters once a month. I even see tigger pods in my reactor keeping it clean!!! The canister filter does not become a nitrate factor because the intake is in the sump return area, and no food gets there. If anything does, then aquavitro remediation bacteria is breaking it down quickly. I am not sure why you change your carbon every 2 weeks. You seem to have no bio load.

I do use a turkey paster from time to time, but Benny does a better job than me. I have zero algae on my rocks, well, I can't see it.

I don't clean my overflow box, actually, I have live rock rubble in it, and my overflow box is filled with tigger pods. They keep it mostly clean. I know food gets stuck there. I have a few short mangrove plans in the overflow box too. I don't have a nitrate issue, so I think the tigger pods are busy (and they are HUGE). In fact, since the food gets stuck in the overflow box and is eaten by the rigger pods or otherwise broken down by the bacteria (I do dose small amount of aquavitro remediation every week directly into that overflow box and let it go from there), there is practically no need to clean the course sponge on the other side of the overflow box. It is NEVER dirty. Maybe I wash it once a month when I change my carbon, GFO and aquavitro purfiltrum. I don't use any socks either. If anything makes it to my sump, it is eaten by tigger pods or is grabbed by the skimmer. I think the buildup of algae in my overflow box is actually working like a mini-algae scrubber :-)

I noticed you don't have a chiller. How do you maintain your water temp? I keep mine with my chiller at 78 F (maybe changes less than 0.5 degrees F per day. I learnt early on chiller is critical in a reef tank. I recommend one. And I would NOT put it in my cabinet area (if it is enclosed). I have less than 30 gal water, so my little Chill Solutions CSXC-1 works perfectly.

The Lifter is not a air pump, at least as far as I know. I have 2 of them, one helps me when I am dosing something over a long period of time and the other runs 24x7 to keep my syphon (on my overflow box) primed all the time. Oh, I have 3. Sorry, and one is used on my coil de-nitrater (although it is mostly gravity fed). I would use a regular air pump. I don't use it, since my 2 power heads moves in my auto top off reservoir the water anyway.

I have a 15 gal reservoir for my auto top off. My total water volume is under 29 gal. To do water changes, I actually mix my salt in my reservoir for auto top off, using RO/DI of course, and I also dose 1 mL of Alpha (aquavitro alpha, the better version of seachem prime). I get it to 1.026 (my salinity in the tank) at the SAME temperature as my tank is. My reservoir has 2 power heads (450 gal / hr each), bot at the very bottom of the tank. It also has a canary pump which sits so flat at the bottom of the tank, it basically leaves less than 1 cm of water left in the 15 gal tank after the pump is turned off. Also, it has a heater (of course). I then take a syphon in my display tank and start to take 5 gal at a time out. As the water comes out of the display tank, the water level in the sump's return area drops, and auto top off brings in freshly mixed salt water. Oh, I let it sit over night, and usually the pH is a match to my tank, maybe 0.1 or 0.2 points higher (tank at 8.1 and fresh salt water at 8.2 or 8.3). I rarely get any build up on my glass (front display). I let natural light hit part of the sides of my tank just to grow little algae for Benny, my Lawnmower Blenny, he loves to snack on the glass. Anyway, I change 5 gal per week, but at times (when I was screwing around with my alkalinity) I had to do major water changes; I have done 2 X 15 gal changes in 2 day period (so, it's not 100% because I do 5 gal at a time, and I wait 2 hrs in between the 3 X 5 gal changes, each day; but it is darn major). No mini cycle. No spikes in Ammonia, Nitrites or Nitrates. I do add SEED every day for 5 days after such a major change and I do not run a UV sterilizer anyway. The bacteria is on your rocks and glass et cetera, not in the water. I noticed you run a UV sterilizer, so you don't have much bacteria (well, you have some in your sump water and some in your display tank as they multiply but as soon as the go through your UV, they are dead. A mini cycle is caused if there is a major pH shift, or a rapid salinity shift or temperature changes. At least, that's my personal experience. Oh, I usually do only 5 gal per week, so I don't fill up the 15 gal RO/DI for water changes all the way, only partially. Once the canary pump has sucked out all the water, I fill it again with RO/DI, usually to around 7.5 to 8 gal, unless going on vacation, then 15 gal. I know there is some salt left in the auto top off reservoir, so it's not pure RO/DI, but that's minute and it does not concern me. My refractometer still reads zero.

+AtReef That;'s great news!. I'm currently cycling a new 150 gallon tank which im upgrading from and transferring from a 93 gallon tank. I control nitrates for the 93 with a remote deep sand bed which is tremendously bulky (but very effective). For the marinepure I have a 4" block a 1" block and (2) quarts of the spheres in the 150 right now and I would love to eliminate the remote sand bed.

good video for the beginner and advanced as a reference. it is important to keep your water overnight, at least 12 hours, letting the salt dissolve. lots of things happen to salt when put in water and you don't want those chemical reactions happening with fish present. for mixing salt, it's a 1/2 cup salt for every gallon. nice job.

im sure, more that 20% water change will not give you a mini cycle, i think BRS said even at 50-100% water change doesnt give them any adverse effects. i love your set up though, that plumbing is off the hook. keep up the videos
