With the filtration I’ve heard it’s bad to use a bio wheel filter on anything much bigger than a 10 gallon is that true? I have a 75 gallon fresh water with a bio wheel I’d love to switch to salt.

I like this video. It is very informative for sure. The only issue I saw was when you mentioned that you were impatient, and got that water/bacteria additive, which in itself is not a bad idea, but you did your research at least. I work at a big box pet store, and run into impatient people a lot, but unlike you, they don't do any research, and try to just jump into having a saltwater tank blindly. I always like to let people know that there are many vids on youtube with good info, but also to take some with a grain of salt, as sometimes, things don't always work, and you have many options to figure out a solution. Aside from my saltwater newb rant, this vid has good info, and I do give you mad props!!!

Lol good vid to start killing fish
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 7 years ago
+tap water reef guy 82 There you go that's what I was waiting for. We cycle for 6weeks plus because we are waiting for bacteria to generate (come to life) this is triggered by the addition of Ammonia. The colonisation of this bacteria takes a while hence the wait time. When doing it in a way shown in the video you are removing that initial wait time as you are adding a colony right from the off. This means there's bacteria ready and waiting right from the beginning of the tanks life. This bacteria needs food (ammonia) ammonia is provided via the fish through waste and there gills. This is how you can add fish right away safely.
tap water reef guy 82
tap water reef guy 82 - 7 years ago
Because a new tank can take well over 6 week something to cycle there is a video on YouTube somewhere they test the bacteria in the water

Hi all.
Ive kept reefs for 12 months now in a 10gal tank and run an internal skimmer and live rock and sand. And have been successful.
But my next task ive converted my Fluval Roma125 to a reef setup, This time I have not used Live rock or live sand.
I have used Dry Marco rock and got plenty of time for the nitrogen cycle to cycle.
I am using a All pond solutions EF2+UV canister filter and the pre booster filter. Unfortunately can not run a sump.
Currently all my parametres are good, but there is nothing yet live in the tank.

My Questions

Would it be advisable to use a nitrifying bacteria starter. I.E Fluval Cycle , API Quickstart or ATM Colony? and which one?

And what media should I use in my Canister filter for my Biological filtration, I know canisters are prone to be nitrate factories but its my only option.

Many thanks.

I would think when you're setting up a SALTWATER tank you'd want to talk about SALT in the WATER and how much SALT to add to the WATER and how to check the salinity of my SALTWATER tank. After all, that's kind of an important step to setting up a SALTWATER fish tank, as the title suggests. Not to mention, nothing about types of lights (necessary for live coral and healthy fish), nor filter media (important for using canister filters). This is hardly a setup video and could easily misinform newbies of the complexity of setting one up, costing them a lot of money in dead fish.

I could cry or kiss you right now LOL I have been looking for a video like this for exactly for so so so damn long. It's almost like the other people dont want you to learn. they talk in words a beginner cant understand and show you 50 pieces of equipment. I've been a freshwater fishkeeper all my life but have been so scared to go into salt mostly because everytime i sit down to watch some tutorials they make it seem so very difficult and one thing goes one point off and boom you've killed everything then show you another bunch of machines to fix that . Math is a problem for me so i dont understand when they start talking really fast about levels without explaining it. You don't need a sump???? thats the thing that scared me most cause it looks like you have to manage like five tanks and machinary under those tables. Like i said i'm so fucking happy right now its made me want to get stuck in to researching again :D
Ashley Goggs
Ashley Goggs - 7 years ago
IMHO I would suggest getting 4ft+ aquarium, the biggest you could possibly afford/ have space for. Start of as a fish only aquarium however choose reef fish. Slowly move into soft corals, then lps corals then sps if that's where you would like to go. However the best advice I can give t anyone interested in corals is do not choose cheap lighting over expensive. You get what you pay for most the time and most corals are photosynthetic.
Kyo Jane
Kyo Jane - 7 years ago
Hey, yeah i've actually started doing a lot more real research since then and not trying to cheat with a few youtube tutorials lol. I've actually decided i'm a lot more interested in corals and plantlife in the saltwater environment than the fish. Of course they're beautiful but so are tropical fish to me. It's more about creating a living environment that fascinates me. Still have a lot of learning to do before i go for it and set up mostly because for me personally it takes a while to get to grips with the math involved but i'm sure i will eventually.
Ashley Goggs
Ashley Goggs - 7 years ago
marine aquariums are pretty simple if you do fish only. Just do what your doing with trops but monitor salinity aswell. Reef aquariums is a different story but thats a fun learning curve.

Aarons Aquarium - 8 years ago
+Syria Sharia You don't need all that at the beginning. A tank, light, filter, heater and rock will get you going. You can build from there.
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 8 years ago
+Syria Sharia The suggestion was to get the biggest tank possible for your situation. That may be a 10 gallon tank. The larger the tank the easier it is to maintain water quality. But obviously the larger you go the more costly it is. Just get the tank that suits your current requirements. You can always go larger in the future if it's something you feel comfortable doing.
Syria Sharia
Syria Sharia - 8 years ago
+Aarons Aquarium I've become a bit obsessed with the idea of a reef tank but I feel the reality is its way above me.... people set up alarms in case their heaters and pumps malfunction... that's way too much for me to consider when just getting into it.
Syria Sharia
Syria Sharia - 8 years ago
+Aarons Aquarium I know u said start with a big tank straight away... but don't u think you ability to run a big tank has depended a lot on the experience u had running a smaller tank when you were a beginner? I'm still confused where to start. I was thinking to get a big tank and just start with one or two fish and a rock. then slowly build it over the years. but now I'm seeing that water quantity and changing is an issue, as well as equipment malfunction, if it were to occur, would be a huge issue. and without the experience, I'd just get lost and give up??
is getting a small tank for practice and just to get the gears going on this new hobby worth it?? so far the issue seems to be water stability with a smaller tank that I'd have to worry about.

Jamie Williams, I have tried everything to get rid of my algae and that sh*t just comes back. I do not use tap water! I things i have done to try to control the problem, weekly water changes, new lights, unplugged my heater, I use the green filters the saltwater store suggested, i even use an additive that is suppose to help, and I feed about once every 2-3 weeks... NO Luck! IT IS GROWING AS I TYPE THIS!

Thanks for the video. I have a couple of freshwater tanks and looking to get in to saltwater. I just got a 125 gallon and want to use a live sand base and live rock. I've had different people telling me it's ok to use a canister filter and some say no. I was thinking about a Fluval FX6 or a Eheim (not sure of the model). What is you intake in a canister and what filter did you use?

I agree with everything you said. I like your "relax and don't worry about it" attitude. You're right there're so many people who post videos 6 months after they get their first tank and say you MUST do everything they did. There are very few absolutes in this hobby, so you'd be hard-pressed to say there's anything you "must" do.

If anything, I'd say, 1. you must find a way to keep the water in the proper temperature range and 2. you must implement some way to keep nutrients under control. Those are about the only absolutes in terms of water quality.

Yea, but for salt water beginners its best use live sand for a natural filtration even better if you have live rock because of the beneficial bacteria.but as you work you way up it is best to used a system with things like refugiums, pro skimmers etc....

To get rocks to stay a certain way is it ok to use super glue? or is it bad for the tank?

Just to get 2 questions answered quick, I see A LOT of videos that make coral care seem very hard and make me believe I need all this extra stuff to care for them, I know I need to feed them a little every few days but do I need all these extra things many videos claim I need like calcium additives?
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 8 years ago
Answer to your first question is, Yes you can use super glue just make sure it has cyanoacrylate in the ingredients. The gel type Is best.

The second question requires more details like what corals you keep etc. I'm doing a live stream on Sunday 24-4-16 at 6pm UK time. if you ask me the question during that I'll be able to explain a lot better.

Butt Cheese
Butt Cheese - 8 years ago
+Wize King Most likely (im not him so i dont know for sure) he used either ocean water (as they sell pre-mixed "ocean" water) if not that he most likely used distilled water. (most likely distilled as its the cheapest way to fill a tank)

Tap water can have some additives to it so its not always the best idea.

Tap water is a huge no, no for me. There's to much crap in it that will irritate or even kill corals. You may be able to get away with it for fish only but even then you will be taking a huge gamble. It's not worth the risk in my opinion I'm afraid.

I plan on setting up my saltwater tank in a 46 gallon bowfront, this will be my first saltwater tank and I was wondering if the curve on the front would allow enough water circulation from one powerhead/wave maker? The tank will have about 3-4 fish but will contain inverts and soft corals primarily. Would the one pump be efficient enough for the corals or would you recommend two, one towards the top in the front and one lower in the back?

You buy instant ocean and mix it in a bucket then test its salinity after its settled. Also I read somewhere that after the salt waters been settling for a while you'll need to use an air stone to put the air back in the water.

Great video! Setting up my saltwater fish tank and eventually want to make it a reef/coral tank with fish as well. Got a great deal on a full setup and can't wait to get some fish in my tank! I did use live sand and it was super cloudy but let it settle overnight and ran the filter and it cleared right up in 2 days. its crystal clear now and didnt want to put fish in while it was cloudy. So excited for it!

Hi! I love your video! It made me go from being scared to do a saltwater tank to being excited to do one. I was hoping I could ask you about something. If you covered it and I missed it I apologize. I know you said that tape water was not good and that RO is the way to go. But I was wondering about well water? If well water is what you mean by tape water sorry for my confusion....
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
You may be able to get away with well water as it hasn't been cleaned with chemicals. To be honest though I would still recommend feeding the well water through an RO/DI unit to remove other impurities. The Saltwater water hobby can be expensive so it's not worth the risk.

+Aarons Aquarium Thats all great and a good guide for real begginers. BUT you didnt mention how to control salidity, PH and other minerals. Or you just buying marine water from pet stores?
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
You would need to add something to the water to trigger the growth of your nitrifying bacteria. Something like pure ammonia or rotting shrimp/ small fish. The time it will take to get to a point where you can add fish is unknown it can range from 6 weeks to beyond.

The way I'd do it is to add your fish right away with a bottle of ATM Colony. Inside the bottle is the nitrifying bacteria needed to take care of the fishes waste.

Most of the things you hear are horror stories told by people that jumped in the deep end. I can honestly say if you do your research and ask as many questions as you want you will thrive in the hobby. Its no harder than keeping freshwater as long as you understand what you are doing. Don't be scared to ask questions there are loads of people out there willing to help.

Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
How long is a piece of string? It could be a week or a month. You just have to wait now for your Ammonia to rise then fall to 0 your Nitrite to rise then fall to 0. Once you have 0 on both of them and you are showing a Nitrate reading your initial cycle is done and you can slowly add fish. Or you can do it the way I have and Add ATM Colony doing it that way you can add fish instantly because you don't have to wait for your bacteria to grow.

Hi. Great video. I'm going to he getting my first reef tank when I have finished redecorating my room.

My question is can a 240/250 litre (50/55 gallon tank go in an upstairs for. Can the floorboards take the weight.

Would be grateful if you have had any experience or knowledge of tanks of that weight going upstairs
Ben Fuller
Ben Fuller - 9 years ago
+Aarons Aquarium ok thanks Aaron. I understand where your coming from. It's all dependant on the stability of my floorboards but good to no of they are stable and strong it shouldn't be a problem. Will probs have to pull up carpet and check properly.

And thanks for info on the eel. I was expecting that but just wanted to be sure. Be nice to have one but not in a tank to small or at expense of other fish
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
My tank is 6ft and is on floor boards and I haven't reinforced the floor but I don't want to say to you it will be ok as it may go through your floor.

You can get a small snowflake but I think it will out grow thay size tank. Also anything it can get in its mouth it may eat.
Ben Fuller
Ben Fuller - 9 years ago
I see thanks for responding anyway. Have read about some people having 600 litre tank in upstairs flat before but I guess like you said it all depends on the floor and how stable floorboards are.

My other question is about fish. Could a snowflake eel fit in a tank that size and be safe around other fish
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
Unfortunately I can't answer that as I don't know how strong your floors are. I have seen people with tanks that size in bedrooms but I don't know if they reinforced there floors.

great video dude :) but can you explain me the differences between live sand/rock and the classic?
TheSlayGuide
TheSlayGuide - 9 years ago
Hi! So the difference between dry rock and live rock, is that live rock is like rock from the ocean. It has all the small crustations, and little things that would be in coral and dry rock doesn't. It's a good idea of your using dry rock too get rock that has many small crevices, holes, etc.

Great video, BUT, I have two nano tanks all in one's (a nanocube 28g and a Fusion 10G). Yes, there's less chance of recovering if you mess up, which I have done before, but after researching and reading and asking questions, I have been able to keep my nanos running for a few years (specifically the nano cube) the only thing I pretty much do is to do weekly water changes (1g on my 10G and 3g on my 28g). I do have very nice hardware for both of them but they are very easy to keep!
Nanoman
Nanoman - 9 years ago
+Aarons Aquarium Nice! Good luck with that. My very first nano reef was a 12G nano cube. Great success with it, and I read up on nanoreef.com for tips, etc. on how to keep a reef. My first mistake was to do a water change, change the carbon out and clean out the filter sponge, which killed my yellow watchman goby and pistol shrimp, but not my corals. Now I use filter floss instead of sponges, I use Chemipure blue and never do both things at the same time!

I have been doing research on saltwater tanks for awhile now. This will be a hobby for me. Is the 50 or 60 in tank a decent size for a beginner or bigger?

+Tania Collins Sorry for the late reply. Yes a 50 or a 60 is a good size tank. it will restrict your choice a little for fish selection but other than that you will really enjoy this hobby.

If you do have live sand or live rock, is it okay to add that chemical to the water to produce the bacteria or will too much be in there after the rock, sand and coral produce the ammonia that then in turn creates more bacteria?
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
It's not a chemical. It's basically the bacteria you are waiting to grow in your tank during its cycle bottled. The reason you can add fish right away using it is because when your fish produce ammonia there is already bacteria there ready to deal with it. So really you will not have an ammonia reading when you test because soon as the fish produce it the bacteria deal with it right away. It's a lot kinder to your fish than a fish cycle where they have to swim in ammonia for a long period of time until the bacteria has grown to large enough proportions to consume thay ammonia.
goxcpre
goxcpre - 9 years ago
+Loving_myboys You can add the bacteria but you should not be adding corals right after you set up the tank. I would wait and see where you levels go first. You really should cycle your fish tank.

Aarons Aquarium

No that's what you use the wavemaker / powerhead for you aim it at the surface which agitates the water and aids gas transfer. Hope this helps.

goxcpre
goxcpre - 9 years ago
+Aarons Aquarium I just meant that I wait for my Nitrates to finish cycling before adding fish. I am sure you are familiar with this method.
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
+goxcpre do you mean you have to wait for your Ammonia and Nitrites to go down? Nitrates won't go down they will just go up during your initial cycle.
goxcpre
goxcpre - 9 years ago
+Turkmenistan Forever You are only putting unnecessary stress on your livestock. It doesn't have to be 6 weeks but you need to wait for your nitrates to go down.
Nanoman
Nanoman - 9 years ago
+Turkmenistan Forever Hmm, it depend. Was your live rock cycled? I have done this before with smaller tanks, like when the time that I started up my 10G. I borrowed live rock from my other tank, put live sand and let it run. Put fish in the next day, but everything had been "cycled" already. If you try to do it when your live rock is not ready, everything would die.

You will then need to top the tank back up with un-salted RO water. Some people do it Manually some people buy auto top of units.

Hi Aaron, im setting up my new tank (580 L ) sump and refugium combined next week and I will be using colony. My rock is currently stored in bins with heat and flow so hopefully still has some life on them. Just wondering why you didn't add more fish to the tank? was  that just being cautious? cheers Steve

I have in an all in one 14 gallon big mistake it's going great but I have such a limited amount of livestock. Also if I were to get a 90 gallon how do I filter the water?sump?hang on the back? Idk?
Thanks
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
+Fred Beer If you was to get the 90 gallon then Filtration is up to you & what suits you best. I can tell you what i am doing on my tank and maybe that can help you make your decision. I'm running a sump and a canister filter. The canister filter is for mechanical filtration i'm using it to polish the water. The sump is for equipment storage and biological & mechanical filtration. In my sump i'll have my heaters, skimmer and a large Refugium. The Refugium is for removing Nitrates & Phosphates. Hopefully the way i have my tank is setup i wont have to do water changes or very little.

+jose Calderon when you're in the hobby a few decades you'll hear alot of methods. Before rodi was the in thing we used cultured water. To each method there is merrit. So I guess you don't believe in the instant cycling bacteria they sell now? Bio-Spira by Dr. Tim, Nutrafin Cycle, Two Little Fishes Biomax.
Nanoman
Nanoman - 9 years ago
+Dee From Brooklyn there might be some bacteria in the water, but the bulk of it is on the surface of the items previously mentioned. But I'm almost certain that there's much more nitrates in that water than beneficial bacteria. I have never heard of any professional aquarist mention that there's any benefit from using old aquarium water to be honest in both fresh or salt water applications. It's best to start with good clean RO DI water and the correct specific gravity.
Dee From Brooklyn
Dee From Brooklyn - 9 years ago
+jose Calderon under the score of this electron microscope you'll notice that bacteria are transfered through the water column. They do make their home in rock and surfaces but as germs, disease and Microscopic life live in water so are bacteria transferred.
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
+jose Calderon This comment is right +Dee From Brooklyn nitrifying bacteria doesn't live in your water column it lives on your surfaces, Rock Substrate etc. Using water from other tanks can cause more issues than benefits as you are bringing in Nitrates and Phosphates into your tank. Starting a tank with filter media or rock from an established tank is the best option.
Nanoman
Nanoman - 9 years ago
+Dee From Brooklyn The water doesn't matter, and that is actually bad because you are adding unwanted nitrates. What matters is the bacteria in the live rock and sand.

Hello. I'd like to start mine. Where do you get your salty water? Did you prepare it? Did you put an osmoregulator?
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
Hi you can buy pre salted water from your local fish shop or if you want to make your own you will want to get an RO/DI unit to filter you tap water then mix that water with salt in a water container. Plastic bins work great for mixing saltwater. Hope this helps.

My tank is 240l. How much salt per litre?
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
The amount of salt you add will depend on the amount of water in you tank. For a first time setup like this one I would fill your tank with freshwater then add the salt to the tank. Leave it 24 hours to make sure all the salt has dissolved. Also make sure all your power heads are on to help mix the salt. for water changes mix your saltwater in a container like a bucket or larger.

Hi, I just set up a tank using ATM Colony Marine as well and added a pair of clowns. Completely in awe with the numbers being perfect so fast(I am impatient also). Like yours my clowns are sticking to the top of the tank primarily. Just wondering how long of a wait until I will be able to start adding an anemone or corals? +Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
+Kristina Dunphy Right well the politically correct answer would be, The Anemone can't be added for at least a year and another month or two for corals. But balls to all that my tank is now 2 weeks old I have 2 Anemones and a good few corals. as long as your parameters are stable then I personally don't see a problem with adding stock. Check all your levels everyday for a week PH, KH, Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Phosphate if you are not getting silly changes in these then I would go for it (your Nitrate and Phosphate may rise in this time but that's normal). Remember this is my personal opinion which I am implementing in my own tank but other people may say differently. Just go with a method that feels comfortable with you. Only you know your tanks personality. Good luck and make sure you update me with the path you have decided to choose and how you are getting on.

bad information on cycling a tank with that snake oil....  this hobby is about patience and most likely your clowns are hurting
Kristina Dunphy
Kristina Dunphy - 9 years ago
I used it in my tank as well and it is a lot smaller so a lot more chance of something going wrong and it only went up to 0.001 for Ammonia once and that is it. Just added a little bit more of the colony and it went right back down and has not spiked since. I wish Id known about it when setting up my other tanks!
Aarons Aquarium
Aarons Aquarium - 9 years ago
Have you used the product before? My Ammonia has never left 0.001 so the clowns are not hurting at all. It's not bad advice it's different advice. Not eveything in this hobby has to take a long time. Check out my reef updates.
