I added tap water into my tank with premixed saltwater i have a 10 gal tank and the water I bought from petco didnt fill the tank all the way so i cupped in some tap water i currently have no fish in my tank. Just live rock. My meter is reading to the bottom number. What do i need to do?

Mr.NiceGuy The salt level is low in your water. Do a water change. About 30%.

Very good video for the beginning reefer. I would also recommend using an RO/Di filter to use for saltwater mix.

Are you using RODI water here? That seems to be the most expensive thing keeping me from getting into reef tanks.

Asking for help here...
42 Gallon Bow Front. All my fish died because of Ich. I have 2 starfish, and a few snails left in the tank. Live rock, no corals. Salt at 1.024, water is perfect.
I continue adding some food everyday, for the invertebrates. Adding some Kent Marine, Garlic Xtreme; daily.

How long should I wait til I can add some fish back in?

If you already have a video on the "Ich" topic, can you please direct me.

I currently have a 60 gallon freshwater tank. Can you convert a tank from freshwater to saltwater? Of course I would have to move the current fish to a different tank.... but how would I go about converting if it is possible?

On the comment of using a 20 gallon for a saltwater tank. I have read on many forums that anything under 40 gallons should be used for a beginner. Now I don't have one but am looking into getting one so please don't quote me. But in all the forums I have read they said start with something like a 55+ aquarium as the start off.

Also do I need a protein skimmer or a sump? Im a beginner with saltwater and im hoping to make my first saltwater tank with some basic corals and clownfish, and those little blue fish in a 20gal tank
SC Prepper
SC Prepper - 8 years ago
skimmer isn't necessary especially at first but it can make a difference. also sump isn't necessary it's just one type of filter although it adds water volume making smaller tanks easier and more stable

I'm looking into setting up a scientific tank for seaweed. Currently I have a few dead/dying ones in a large tank that are doing worse every day. In the future I would like to set up a tank and get a few different red, green, and brown species. With that said I would prefer to get keep inverts and fish out so I don't lose any specimens, unless having some would help. Would you happen to have any advice on what the best way to set up such a tank would be? I was told getting a shallower tank could help but I would like to be able to get some good sized seaweed growing and preferably reproducing.

+Bailey Armstrong you add to rodi water. NEVER top it off with saltwater because when the water evaporates the salt doesn't evaporate. So you'd be raising the salinity which is a big no no

would a 29 gallon be big enough for 2 ocellaris clown fish 1 flame angel fish?
Literal Gaming
Literal Gaming - 9 years ago
+BigomsDX Yeah just introduce the clowns at the same time so the other one doesnt "Bully" the other one.
Danil ANikiforov
Danil ANikiforov - 9 years ago
That would be fine, and also 2 clownfish would be perfectly fine. The more dominant clown will turn into a female and be a bit larger than the male, so they would pair up. I have a Flame angel and a clown pair + some other fish and they do perfectly fine.
Bojan Bajicic
Bojan Bajicic - 9 years ago
Flame angel is aggressive and needs atleast a 55, clowns are also aggressive towards each other, unless you know what your doing only add one clownfish to a tank

Hi, I am planning to start a saltwater tank with my 40 gal and watched your video but didn't see any information on sump filters? I am wondering what your input on sumps would be for new people? I am planning to make a diy 10gal sump

I am VERY new but want to start. I am wondering what type of sand you should use? I really want to have live rock as well. Can you have both? I hope that is not a silly question.
Rotter Tube Reef
Rotter Tube Reef - 9 years ago
+Sara J Mendoza yes you can have both. i would recommend starting with dead rock so as not to risk bringing anything bad into your tank.
BeauIXI
BeauIXI - 10 years ago
Hey mate, I'm a planted tank guy, but I'm quite sure that you can have both. The sand should change your GH, KH or PH, while the live rock will.. Please correct me, anyone, if I'm mistaken.

What actually would a protein skimmer do
Rotter Tube Reef
Rotter Tube Reef - 8 years ago
yes, it makes things so much easier. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! i don't use any filters or foam blocks, just rely on my protein skimmer. when i get a larger tank i'm going to run 2 protein skimmers. foam blocks and filters trap the crap and pollute your water if you don't clean them often....like every few days.
Atlantean Fishkeeper
Atlantean Fishkeeper - 8 years ago
You don't NEED one, but makes things easier if you have one.

+Lisa Gilbert protein skimmers remove solids such as waste and uneaten food from your tank...you need one in salt water.

Ok I don't have saltwater tank but I know a solid amount about them. So basically it makes foam from bad elements from the tank and extracts it.

Smaller the tank, the more difficult it is too keep stable parameters. If you're doing corals, spend the money and use ro/di. It's worth the money in the long run, way better coral growth and you don't risk adding anything unwanted. That and you'll make you're money back eventually on not having to buy conditioner and it's better for your biological filtration. If you have high nitrates, sand will grow a ton of algae, particularly brown algae and hair algae. If you're using live sand, DO NOT RINSE! You're better to buy a larger bucket of salt, way more cost effective. Invest in a refractometer, swing arms are notorious for not being accurate. Introduce fish after about 3-4 weeks, or when you test and you're at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 10ppm or less nitrate. Damsels only if you're planning on having them as the only fish, otherwise put chromis they're more peaceful. All corals need power heads as it provides oxygen. 2 power heads minimum for any tank, one on each side. Lighting just make sure you have enough PAR (energy put out) everything else if preference. 7 gallon tank you can't have many fish at all. Maybe a few chromis tops, or a gobie. ATO is great if you have a sump. Strongly recommend a protein skimmer on any saltwater tank. If you can add a sump it makes everything easier in the long run. Don't rush anything, take your time setting the tank up and you'll be successful.

i would love a marine tank, just a tank like yours which has just inverts in will do me (will add a few damsels and maybe clownfish too), seems simple to set up as i have a brackish tank which is the closest to a marine tank i can get to. I guess its the cost thats stopping me from having one but it looks like there is a cheap way to do it so I need to look up on this.
