Would the smallest refugium set from AlgaeBarn fit a biocube 32? Going to start my first every saltwater tank and would rather do a refugium than a skimmer.

Hey George,
So they offer a 18-24' light like the one you have, but also a 24-36' model as well. Does the 18-24' model work well with your tank, because i'm seeing most people go with the 24-36'. With that being said they don't have the mounting bracket attached, so that might just be the issue.

So I had a question. I've been in the fish hobby for several years. I've tried keeping a saltwater tank but failed so I have been out of the hobby for many years. I'm trying to get back into it. But, there so many ways of going with buying a tank it is difficult to decide. There are all in one systems by red sea, BUT they are very expensive! Is red sea a rip off? What do you think about buying off craiglist? Or is buying a tank, stand, pumps etc separate a better choice. If there one brand of tanks better than another. Which brand is more reliable?

Excellent condensed advice Georgie. One thing : your rock landscape needs to be changed . I’ve done a similar mistake in past. 3 things: (1) get slightly bigger rocks to create cavities (2) don’t try to hide the black acrylic part of the tank , because the rockwork cliff will force most of your fish to swim at the front only , creating limited space and fighting for premium spots - it’s better to put the rock in the middle and give more swimming space around - this will allow you to put more fish too (3) your foundation rocks are flat against the sand , which will cause eventually detritus to be stuck - the bigger rocks I am suggesting can have smaller rocks lifting them from the sand , thereby minimizing overall contact with sand AND creating for fish to go and sleep - win win . Good luck Georgie !

Have you ever have unknown salinity spike. I do water change and tested water to 1.26. Week later it jumps to 1.29-1.30. I couldn’t figure out why. Water was mixed to 1.26, 24hrs before water change. Only happen to my 20gal, not my 75gal. Same water. I also tried mixing to 1.22 and still happen.

Why do local fish stores sell stuff to new reefers that they don't need. You don't need ammonia or turbo start if you use live sand. You don't need add more bacteria every month. Bacteria are constantly growing and multiplying. Which fish store do you use. Tell then where to stick it.
CoralFish12g
CoralFish12g - 6 years ago
To clear something up, the sand I was using was actually dry. It was previously live sand that had dried up. My fault for mentioning it as live sand.
Annie Duncan
Annie Duncan - 6 years ago
You need wait 6 days to see if anything on the rock dies, and gives you an ammonia spike. If you have a big spike, you just need to wait till the bacteria on the rock eat the ammonia. Bacteria in a bottle are not needed, but might speed up the time it takes to get zero ammonia. Most of the tome you will have zero ammonia after 6 days, and your tank is ready to go.
fe Lope
fe Lope - 6 years ago
Annie Duncan I put the sand and live rock in and the bacteria in two days or so later I put three chromis in two died I checked the ammonia and it was high so ya I do know it can still happen
Annie Duncan
Annie Duncan - 6 years ago
It's not about cycling the water, it is about building up enough bacteria. Good live sand should have enough bacteria. If you add it to a tank, the tank is instantly cycled (full of bacteria). The idea that you have wait, or see an ammonia spike is wrong. The only reason your tank hit an ammonia spike was because something died on the rock. Live sand has less life in it, so less chance of anything dying, so no ammonia spike. You don't quite understand cycling a tank. Most reefers don't including George.
fe Lope
fe Lope - 6 years ago
Annie Duncan I wonder how fast the live sand would cycle the water alone though I used live sand fritz live rock bio spira and my tank still hit an ammonia spike it was done cycling at around day 3 or so I think live sand alone would take a bit longer and who know how long it has been sitting in the shelves the bacteria’s have expiration dates.
Annie Duncan
Annie Duncan - 6 years ago
Yes a good brand, so no need to waste your money on a bottle of bacteria, and ammonia.
twinturbo111
twinturbo111 - 6 years ago
Annie Duncan not a sham sham. I guess maybe just optional . Although there are plenty of “live sand” manufacturers that are selling crap and those are shams and won’t speed up the cycle . The brand that Georgie is using is good tho
Annie Duncan
Annie Duncan - 6 years ago
O.k I agree there are no critters, but plenty of bacteria. No reason why the bacteria in a bag should die.  If you are saying that live sand is a sham, then why is George recommending it. Why not just use dry sand, and the bottle of bacteria. George tries to tell us, you put live sand in your tank and hope the nitrogen cycle takes place. If you add nothing to the tank, and nothing on the sand dies, then the nitrogen cycle will not happen. Does it need to happen. No it does not. The nitrogen cycle only needs to happen if you want to create ammonia, to grow more bacteria because you don't have enough. The live sand should contain all the bacteria you need. If you are worried about bacteria levels in the live sand, you could add ammonia to a concentration of 0.5ppm. Wait 12 hours and test your tank. If you have zero ammonia, then you know you have the right amount of bacteria, so know need for a bottle. There is no need to wait 30 days when using live sand. What are you waiting for.
twinturbo111
twinturbo111 - 6 years ago
Annie Dunca live sand is mostly a sham . There is definitely no critters in there either , otherwise they would die off from lack of oxygen and cause ammonia spikes . Dosing live bacteria is beneficial tho
Annie Duncan
Annie Duncan - 6 years ago
Why bother using it then. It depends what you mean by live. Do you mean the sand contains little nitrogen cycle bacteria, or do you mean the sand contains little life (bristle worms and pods). As a biochemist I can tell you that the bacteria can say alive for weeks in a bag of live sand. They live for weeks in a bottle, so why can't they live for weeks in live sand. And what is the point of the ammonia. Why do you need to add bacteria every month. This video is so confusing.

Devin Galaspie - 6 years ago
dobbynfred072107 just be sure you know you do NOT need to buy all the products he is promoting if you do your research which you need to with SW tanks. He literally added a tiny bottle of concentrated bacteria and then bought a big bottle of diluted bacteria to keep it going. If you use live sand and buy cheap saltwater at a local fish shop you’re tank is basically cycled but not completely. Seachems Stability is all you need to add, not two bottles of studf

TheFishTank Doc. Sounds good I would try that next time won’t be a while though I am already juggling 3 tanks

fe Lope if you just use only live sand, then add enough ammonia to give a reading of 0.5ppm, and wait just 12 hours, your tank is fully cycled and ready to go., if you have zero ammonia. No need to wait 3 days or 30 days like George. And no need for a bottle of bacteria.

TheFishTank Doc. True they also sell man made rock that has nothing to die off of. This option might even be faster. Depending on how many fish you want to put in though the more live stuff the better rock sand bottle Bacteria especially if you put 5 fish in a small tank like I did. It all works though. That 30 day cycle with a shrimp is a waste of time in my opinion.

fe Lope You don't need live rock and turbo start. You could have used dry rock and turbo start, and your tank will be ready in 24 hours. When using live rock, you need to wait 6 days, in case anything on the rock dies and produces an ammonia spike. Nothing wrong with dry rock I have used it myself.

TheFishTank Doc. Not everyone wants to put live rock in a new tank bunch of hitch hikers I used both fritz turbo and live rock my tank also cycled in like 2-3 days but now I have aptasia and there were also some clams on it.

Well said. George is using live sand. This is the same as using live rock. You are importing all the bacteria you need on the rock or sand. Therefore your tank is cycled (full of bacteria) when you add the sand. You don't need to add any more bacteria, or add ammonia. Ammonia will cause more bacteria to grow, but why not just add more bacteria out of the bottle. George added the right amount of bacteria from the bottle, so you don't need the ammonia. He's just cycled his tank 3 times. once with live sand, then with bacteria (instant cycle), then with ammonia!!!!!.

I am setting up a new Fusion 20 tank soon and I will be using dry rock but live sand and will be adding bacteria in a bottle as well. How long after adding the beneficial bacteria can I start adding livestock like shrimps and corals?

I wanted to smash the like, because George's videos in terms of presentation are awesome. It is just a shame what he telling us is confusing, although maybe not confusing to new reefer, who doesn't fully understand the hobby.Cycling a tank simply means building up levels of bacteria, to cope with Nitrogen Cycle (ammonia created by rotting fish pee and poo). Adding live sand, adds all the bacteria you need, with out the need to wait whilst bacteria levels build up. So when George added his live sand he instantly cycled his tank (built up the levels of bacteria). It is good practice to wait 6 days before adding fish, just in case anything in the live sand dies, and creates an ammonia spike. If you have zero ammonia after 6 days. your tank is ready to go. If you have ammonia, you need wait till the ammonia is eaten by the bacteria on the sand. This is nitrogen cycle in action, and just allowing the tank to go through a cycle (ammonia becomes nitrite which becomes nitrate), not cycling the tank, because the tank is ready cycled by adding the live sand. You could achieve the same instant tank with live rock, and dry sand. Adding a bottle of bacteria is another way to instantly cycle a tank, and create the right levels of bacteria. This a good method if you uses dry sand and rock with no bacteria on.Adding ammonia will just cause the tank to go through a pointless cycle (ammonia to nitrite to nitrate), if you already have the right levels of bacteria, because you have used live rock, or sand, or a bottle of bacteria.  If you have not used any live rock/sand or bottle of bacteria to add instant bacteria, then you could add ammonia. This feed the bacteria naturally present all around us, (a few of which will enter a new tank). The ammonia will feed the bacteria, allowing the bacteria to multiply. This cycling a tank (building up levels). George has just cycled his tank 3 times. You only need to cycle a tank once. I never cycled my 160g. It was a tank upgrade. I used all the live rock from the old tank, therefore the tank did not need cycling. The levels of bacteria I needed were on the live rock.

Did you only add ammonia once during your cycle or did you continue to add it throughout your cycle?

Why would you do a refugium over a protein skimmer? I mean I know that it helps with bacteria and taking out all the nitrates and phosphates but I have the Red Sea max nano and it came with the skimmer. Should I take it out and just start a refugium and why?
