I will clarify. I have 40 gallon breeder tank (36" long). I plan to use a mix of 80%dry rock/ 20% live rock. No corals for now. How many power heads (flow rate too plez) and really. .no hob or canister filter needed? I have no sump/refugium at this point. Thank you. I'll head right to order page. .along with my dry rock order !

Love the video, but i have some questions. I've had a freshwater aquarium for about a year and a half and i loved it. I have always wanted to do a reef tank, but was told so many times how hard it is to maintain. I am finally going to set one up and im pumped. I have a 30 gallon tank (might be 40, oops) and a hang on filter that i plan on using. Would it be safe to use a filter that has been in freshwater tanks? Also, when the tank is cycling and you do 20% water change each week, How often do you have to do water changes later on once its done cycling and you are slowly adding fish/done adding fish? When you add the first couple fish, what do you recommend? Thanks so much!

1. I am most likely wanting to use a white sand, which do you recommend the best? Or is a pool filter sand ok?
2. I have (4)26W 6500k Daylight 1600lumen CFL spiral cool natural light bulbs with reflectors. Will these work? How many too use also? I do have a 1yr old T5HO bar being used on my freshwater tank. Could I swap these?
3. I do not have any access to RO water, recommendations?

RO water is that what comes in those big huge blue bottles?
2. Wouldn't be advisable to use the CFL bulbs. For one the tank would look quiet yellow which isn't usually attractive in saltwater tanks but that end spectrum also tends to encourage nuisance algae growth. You could use the T5 strip with an appropriate bulb though.
3. Certainly best practice to use RO/DI water. You can either purchase an RO/DI unit, or many fish stores sell RO/DI water (sometimes even pre-mixed saltwater) All else fails, the large 5g jugs you get refilled at the grocery store, Wal-mart, etc are usually RO water.
