I have a questiin...I have a month old tbk and is already cycled... can I add more live rock from the lfs...or soul I do something to it before I add it to the tank? I have 2 clown fish in the tank
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
If the rock is pre cured and fully cycled then it is possible. I would recommend doing your own cure with the rock just to be safe :)

Usually adding corals introduces enough life into the tank that then colonizes the rock. The problem with using live rock to seed your dry rock is that it defeats the purpose of pest free dry rock. You can introduce pests from the live rock like bobbit worms, flatworms, gorilla crabs, mantis shrimp, etc. :)
Joshua Vega
Joshua Vega - 8 years ago
I've had a local pet shop tell me that without having at least a couple of live rock that you can't bring the dry rock or pukani to live because once it's dead it's dead is this true?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Once it cures and cycles it is considered live since there is bacteria colonizing the surface of the rock. In 6 months to a year it will start to look really natural as critters and coralline algae takes hold.
Joshua Vega
Joshua Vega - 8 years ago
How would I be able to bring this to life?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
Yup! Especially pukani. There is a lot of dead organic material on that rock you will want to break down with a good cure.

You can make your own rock using a mixture of aragonite and concrete. If you vomit in it you'll make puke-kani.

There have been comments that this rock releases phosphates. Is this true and if so how do you get around this? Love the rock..
homebrw91
homebrw91 - 10 years ago
+BulkReefSupplyCom Thanks for the comprehensive reply.  I ordered 75lbs of reef saver over the Turkey weekend for my 180 i am going to set up in January.  I will get some Pukani to mix in with it... ;o)
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago
+homebrw91  This is a topic that manages to poke up from time to time and its easy for folks to get confused about it.  The rock itself will not add phosphates to your tank.   What can happen with any rock though is that the organisms that may be on its surface will break down and those could certainly add phosphates and nitrates to the tank.  This will be the case with just about any rock though.  The dry rock all has bits of dead organics on it and it would be the same with live rock as the organisms that are on it die as well (downside here is that instead of it all happening up front it tends to happen much slower over a much longer period of time).  All in all, its not something you can get around for the most part but if you let the rock cure and then change the water you'll basically be removing that phosphate (among other things) and pouring it down the drain.

I am doing a 120 tank and I want to use dead rock because it's cheaper and safer, but im not sure if I really want to do it because I love the purple algae.. how long before it gets cover in that purple algae and is there anything I can do to speed up the process?

"You're not keeping fish; you're keeping water". Best advice I have heard this year !
bskdopeboy
bskdopeboy - 11 years ago
Keep in mind that the smaller the body of water; the harder the 'work'. I read the best piece of advice I think I ever have about 6 months ago- "You're not keeping fish; you're keeping water". Keeping the water chemistry stable is a huge part of keeping fish and corals/inverts happy and alive, and keeps your tank looking clean. I'm just building a tank setup that will triple my water volume. Going from a nano (55l) to a tank (93l) and sump (50l). Feel free to PM me, as I was you 2 years ago.

For what it is worth, Pukani rock is a coral and does have a natural growth pattern or grain. Having the large side at the bottom does mean the coral is upside down. I try not to talk about it much because once you notice this grain or growth pattern it is hard to miss and it can drive you nuts every time you see it upside down or sideways in a tank : )
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 11 years ago
Fair point. I guess what I was getting at is most things that grow like plants and corals have a small base and get wider at the top with pieces that create overhanging ledges. Honestly aquascapeing is an art form and as long as You like it you have created a winner.

Aquascaping is really art and everyone has their idea of what the ideal aquascape looks like. I honestly can't seem to get one done now with out some manual changes to the rock. particularly cutting off the bottoms to create a stable flat surface.
