I've kept fresh water tanks for 15 years but I've never kept salt water I've always wanted a salt water tank but I don't know much. I don't know how much salt to add to a tank or even how to read a hydrometer. I'm basicly an idiot when it comes to salt water can you make a video on reading and using a hydrometer include how much salinaty to add to a salt water tank please I'm really green. thanks

so when I do water changes, do I replace the 20% water with the saltwater or still the freshwater? or is the freshwater just for top offs?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 7 years ago
During a water change you will want to use saltwater because you are removing a portion of the salt and the water from the tank. During evaporation on the other hand, water turns to water vapor and evaporates, leaving salt behind so you will need to replace the lost water with fresh water. :)

Any cheaper alternatives to an RO system? That doesn't sound simple at all. Not everyone can have something like that in their house. In my case, for a 14 gallon aquarium.

For years I was using surface fans that I made myself from Computer fans bolted to plastic frame. I purchased the fans on eBay and connected them to a 12 v adaptor, worked great,, if they break after years they are cheap. Surprisingly cheap fans are incredibly water resistant.

As a beginner who started off watching videos like these...was unfortunately convinced out of excitement that i am ready for a saltwater tank considering i have years of freshwater experience. THINK AGAIN. If you want to own a reef tank or are switching over to a reef tank...Think again...BE READY TO WORK YOUR ASS OFF AND SPEND A SHIT TON OF MONEY...no matter who tells you what...reef tanks are a JOB.... Don't learn the hard way like i did....Anyway I will close with that....Message me if you have any questions. But if you are bored and want to be busy for no reason and have cash to spare...go into reefing.

Kolmo730 - 8 years ago
+BulkReefSupplyCom They are fine now that I got my skimmer working properly (took me about a month). And in that time I fell behind on water changes. Which I'm assuming caused the algae growth, but now I can't get rid of it. Now that I have proper filtration will I start to see it dissipate? Or is there anything more I can do

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
+cristianjoy manzano I would recommend checking with your state's laws regarding collection. Some places allow it, others don't. You'll also want to make sure to do your research on that species to be able to care for it properly. Additionally, you shouldn't release the fish back into the wild at a later date.

+BulkReefSupplyCom sorry to jump in here but, did u do a complete cycle with jus dry live rock, power heads ands some regular water changes ? This is how I want to start my fish only set up jus with live sand added an progress to a coral reef like u did here.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
+Brandon Mooney Ok, cool. So honestly live rock provides A LOT of filtration to the point where good quality rock and water changes is usually enough to maintain a healthy tank. You could potentially look into some sort of hang on protein skimmer like a Reef Octopus HOB BH-1000 Classic

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 8 years ago
+ArkTiger4c Absolutely, but it's a bit different compared to mixing up synthetic water. Storing natural seawater can be difficult, since the plankton in the water can breakdown and spoil the water. I would recommend collecting the water from a boat a hundred or so yards off the shore to avoid any potential pollution to play it safe and using the water relatively quickly.

My city's water is treated by RO, does this mean I could use my tap water with dechlorinator like I do with my freshwater tanks? If my freshwater fish are thriving, would that mean saltwater would do well in it too? (with added salt of course)
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago

Have a 40 gallon breeder tank... eventually want some easy corals.  What powerheads are suggested in this application?  Is there a style of powerheads that are more preferred then others?  Same for HoB filter..suggestions.  Going to BRS website to order ;o)
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago
+derekressler79 Cool!  Luckily since the dry/live rock does the majority of filtration in marine/reef tanks it really mitigates the necessity of a HOB style filter.  You could run some reactors though for carbon and GFO to give you chemical filtration.  Generally for a reef we recommend 20-40 times your display volume for total flow in GPH.  So in your situation I would recommend 800 -1600 GPH total split between your powerheads.  I would probably go with two.
derekressler79
derekressler79 - 9 years ago
+BulkReefSupplyCom

I will clarify. I have 40 gallon breeder tank (36" long). I plan to use a mix of 80%dry rock/ 20% live rock. No corals for now. How many power heads (flow rate too plez) and really. .no hob or canister filter needed? I have no sump/refugium at this point. Thank you. I'll head right to order page. .along with my dry rock order !
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago
+derekressler79 It really depends on what you are looking to do.  There are lower end options, and higher end options that will both give you the water movement you need.  It comes down to what features you are looking for.  Personally, I really like controllable pumps like the VorTech, Tunze, or Gyre. Luckily on a reef tank with live rock a hang on back filter isn't that necessary.  Instead I would consider getting a HOB protein skimmer and maybe a reactor or two.  :)

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago
+Joseph Gallagher Are you looking for a wavemaker/powerhead?  If that's the case we normally recommend around 20-40 times your display volume split between all your powerheads.  So you'd be looking for around 580 to 1160 GPH total.  I would probably recommend two Koralia Nano 425's or even a Tunze 6040 or two.  :)

BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago
+xToXiicxT3RRoRx Pretty much every skimmer will have SOME noise to it, with some being louder than others.  If it is a relatively new skimmer you can try contacting Red Sea USA for assistance, and they even may be able to replace parts or the pump if it is under warranty.
Jack7296
Jack7296 - 9 years ago
I have a red sea max 250, its the pump its very loud im even considering getting a new skimmer. I have already completely cleaned the pump also. Are all skimmers loud?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago
+xToXiicxT3RRoRx Where is the noise originating from?  The pump or where the air intake is?  If it is pump noise the pump may need to be disassembled and cleaned.  If the air is coming from the skimmer intake, then adding a silencer to the intake tube will help.

(This is posted by MustacheSeal's sister)
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 9 years ago
+MustacheSeal The power heads provide movement in the tank, but do not offer any filtration. I'd definitely recommend a skimmer, depending on the size of your tank (we don't tend to use them on the smaller (16g) tanks where water changes are easy to keep up with.)

+SantaMonicaHelp Assistant Absolutely!  You have a few different options.  The easiest would be to setup a smaller tank and mix/store your water in a 5 gallon bucket.  Another option (that is admittedly more of a workout) is to purchase water from a fish store and transport it home.

Hi BRS,
Love the video, but i have some questions. I've had a freshwater aquarium for about a year and a half and i loved it. I have always wanted to do a reef tank, but was told so many times how hard it is to maintain. I am finally going to set one up and im pumped. I have a 30 gallon tank (might be 40, oops) and a hang on filter that i plan on using. Would it be safe to use a filter that has been in freshwater tanks? Also, when the tank is cycling and you do 20% water change each week, How often do you have to do water changes later on once its done cycling and you are slowly adding fish/done adding fish? When you add the first couple fish, what do you recommend? Thanks so much!

+ab1397100 That would still be the best practice as there isn't anyway to know whether or not everything that is dead or dying has broken down entirely.  That said though, we almost always use dry rock around here because you don't have to worry about flatworms, aiptasia, and other pests that are common on live rock.

Thinking about ordering some rock for my first tank, but have no idea how heavy this stuff is?  For example is the rock on the left in this video 1 or 2 pounds ?  or is it more like 10 to 15 lbs.  Thanks for your help :)
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago
Each rock is different so its difficult to put a specific weight on it (and depends on the type of rock).  The rock in the left of the tank was likely closer to 20+ pounds (could be even more).  When it comes to the pukani rock on the average a football size piece weighs in the 6-9lbs or so though.

For making a video on how to start a basic salt water aquarium, why would you feature a reverse osmosis deionization system in the video? most "new" people don't even know what that is.. doesn't using sand help cycle the tank, and wont it kick start another cycle?

It's not absolutely necessary, but certainly a good way to be successful from the start. Sand is almost an entirely aesthetic addition to the tank.  While I personally like the look of it, it is more work to maintain.  You may fine this other video of interest if you want a different way of setting one up

+BulkReefSupplyCom That makes perfect sense! thanks.you guys are great.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago
+Chris Sabia No way to really know.  It could be perfectly fine or it could have contaminants (and safe for drinking doesn't necessarily mean its safe for a reef tank).  This is really the case just about everywhere, the reason people use filtered water is because you always know what you're getting.  That way any time something doesn't work in your tank or a critter dies, you can instantly eliminate your water as an issue and move on to finding the true cause.
this guy
this guy - 10 years ago
Is well water safe to use without any special treatment other than salt and bacteria . In other words do I need to purify and condition the well water as you show in the video with tap water since this well water has no sort of treatments added to it like city tap water does.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago

Next big question is what is live rock and what types of rocks do I use?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago
+Ziabis Oh Water changes are made using saltwater, as you are removing saltwater and then replacing with new saltwater. Top offs are made using freshwater, because water slowly evaporates from your tank and salt does not - therefore you are only replacing the freshwater that has evaporated.

I really like your video, step by step setup. I am a 100% total newbie to saltwater. I would like to setup up my 29G Tall as my girlfriend loves the saltwater fish colors. I do have several questions. I hope you are willing to help me out? Let me point out 1 major hurdle, I am on a tight budget. I do have a spare Eheim Eco canister and also have 2 seeded freshwater canisters running on my freshwater 29G. I also have 1 circulation pump as well a heater.
1. I am most likely wanting to use a white sand, which do you recommend the best? Or is a pool filter sand ok?
2. I have (4)26W 6500k Daylight 1600lumen CFL spiral cool natural light bulbs with reflectors. Will these work? How many too use also? I do have a 1yr old T5HO bar being used on my freshwater tank. Could I swap these?
3. I do not have any access to RO water, recommendations?
I really hope you can help me out. Thank you for your time.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago
+Ziabis Oh In the beginning the bare necessities are rock, salt, water, heater, pump. You'll want some type of lighting also. A skimmer is nice to have, but if you are doing consistent water changes you can get away without one. As far as the RO water, it depends where you are getting it from.
Ziabis Oh
Ziabis Oh - 10 years ago
In your video you suggest using so many different types of equipment. ie: UV, skimmers and several other types of equipment. They all sound very expensive. I watched some one else small 10g setup and all they used was a skimmer and HOB filter. Since i am on a tight budget what is the bare minimum devices do I need to support a 29G?
RO water is that what comes in those big huge blue bottles?
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 10 years ago
+Ziabis Oh 1. You want to use reef sand, as its calcium carbonate and you know its not going to have any hazardous minerals, chemicals, etc.   The fiji pink is the most popular as it has a middle of the road size that looks nice, but doesn't blow all over the place.
2. Wouldn't be advisable to use the CFL bulbs.  For one the tank would look quiet yellow which isn't usually attractive in saltwater tanks but that end spectrum also tends to encourage nuisance algae growth. You could use the T5 strip with an appropriate bulb though.
3. Certainly best practice to use RO/DI water.  You can either purchase an RO/DI unit, or many fish stores sell RO/DI water (sometimes even pre-mixed saltwater)  All else fails, the large 5g jugs you get refilled at the grocery store, Wal-mart, etc are usually RO water.

ellvas13
ellvas13 - 11 years ago
dry rock is a dry rock that used to be a part of a ocean but now is being harvest inland. It cycles longer but You won't get any nastys. it will become live rock once cycled. Live rock is a "wet" rock that will cycle less as it already have beneficial bacteria on it. Most of the time is better to go for wet live rock as it's full of life and You can get some nice pods with it, snails, britle stars etc however it can be full of crap that You don't want in Your tank.
ellvas13
ellvas13 - 11 years ago
yeah not really.... not good at math are You? :). First you start blue for an hour then you add white. They run together for 6h after which white goes of and blue stays for another hour. Lights are of for another 16hrs and cycle starts again.

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 11 years ago
There are a lot of ways to look at this. A full blown SPS tank certainly requires knowledge and time but this isn't the type of thing most people start with and probably only account for less than 10% of the tanks out there. A tank with some clowns, zoanthids, mushrooms, frogspawn... Is pretty darn easy. I have seen a 100+ tanks like this that have almost no equipment and successful with really the only work being water changes and feeding. Keeping my yard nice is 10 times as much work.

Ryan Batcheller

This can be true but it depends on the source of the rock and what’s on it. Most live rock is boat rock which was in a box on a boat for 3+ weeks before it got to a wholesaler. Most often it is in a wet dark box for 4-6 weeks before it gets to a reefers home. You can typically identify boat rock with the price. If it is $2-3 a pound it basically has to be boat rock because at today’s fuel prices you simply can’t fly a 50 pound box of rock from Fiji to the US and sell it for a profit at $100.

He stated in the video that during the cycling period he turns his light of because of algae growth. Well to this i would say, most people use live rock to cycle the aquarium & if you are going to use "live rock" it is nessesary to use correct marine lighting such as those you would use in a regular reef aquarium, the reason being that all the organisms and things growing on the live rock are dependant upon light for survival, so not having lighting is a big deal.
Max Brown
Max Brown - 11 years ago
All you need for a basic saltwater aquarium is just a heater a filter and salt, some live rock it does not matter what kind of lighting you get cause you're not going to Keep Coral cause you're a beginner, beginners should start off with no coral just fishes their tanks cus coral is already another story lol. But a Basic saltwater aquarium it is not hard to take care of
Max Brown

no you can put a 40 gallon tank on the second floor, a 40 gallon tank will put you near 350Lbs. a residential floor is beyond capable of that weight, if you are unsure call a local Code enforcement officer, they should know what is safe its there job
Ryan Brown
Ryan Brown - 11 years ago
You can get a heater, and fans cheap at a local store, or other websites. the equipment there using are professional grade. in my Point of view. id suggest a used tank on craigslist. i just picked up a 45 gallon for 80$ with a stand, you can get a heater for 20$ and fans for 35$ each. but the more money you spend the safer and more comfortable you're pets are. start off with the cheap stuff and upgrade to the good stuff if you have too

well you could probably get by by actually running the water to the tank instead of having a pump do it for you thats really all that system is and the reverse osmosis is just a fancy machine that removes the contaminates in the tap water such as chlorine, Bromate, Arsenic etc etc i allways suggest for people to get one if they can afford it if not you can just use water for the tap with a dechlorinator and conditioner and you should be just fine

Also, should I get cured live rock from my LFS or go with uncured rock like you have from your site?

I have been out of the hobby for over 15 years but I always heard that salt water set ups are not for beginners. If you have no fish keeping experience at all start with goldfish or freshwater tropical. A lot easier to care for and the fish are much cheaper. The salt water species run at least $30 a piece.

@mannyc2006 You would need to check with your property management. Some apartments forbid having fish tanks. Others will require you to show proof of adequate renters insurance. As far as the R/O system is concerned: You would have to see what water sources you have available in your unit. If you have a washer/dryer in your unit I would suggest splitting the cold water side to supply your R/O system. Just be careful. You don't want to be responsible for flooding your neighbors place.

BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 12 years ago
@HardHatDIver412 My first tank was a very successful 90 gallon reef tank with nothing but hang on equipment. Equipment can always be replaced with a good water change schedule and solid feeding habits.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 12 years ago
@HardHatDIver412 the powerheads provide circulation and flow for the tank. Good flow is a critical component of a healthy reef system. I honestly believe that the affordable and easy to use flow options for flow that came out in the last 5 years are largely responsible for the drastic increase in successful reefers.

@MultiNitrorc You can get away without using one by buying water at the store. Some people have success with declorinators. However I personally do not know anyone who has had long term success with a reef tank and doesn't own a RO/DI system. I don't think that is a coincidence. Not only are you using the best quality water but because it is in your house and easy you are more likely to do proper maintenance.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 12 years ago
@1989calvindo I personally never set up a tank with a overflow that goes over the edge. There are too many dangers with siphon breaks and power outages. What size bulkheads depends on the size of the return pipe. I think I would personally use 1 1/4 or 1 1/2. I might go 1 1/2 because it is easier to find fittings/valves for that size.
BulkReefSupplyCom
BulkReefSupplyCom - 12 years ago
@Calliavida LOL , it is pretty easy to get caught up in all this. The danger and beauty of saltwater is you can get started with so little but there is basically no end to the upgrades if you have the time and money : )

The primary filtration is biological in the form of bacteria that lives in the aquarium. In a reef system tthe bacteria lives on the surface of the rock. The bacteria will breakdown the waste into less harmless nitrate which is removed with water changes. Our protein skimmer also acts as a filter by removing some of the dissolved compounds before they can break down into nitrate. If they are changed frequently a filter sock can serve to also remove waste before it breaks down.

hey Mr bulkreef, i was wondering if you could help me decide which light to go with, here's the scenario. my tank is a 16g (65L) and im planing on putting 1.5-2pound of live rocks to help with filtration as im not using a P/skimmer, so my question is: is a 2x24w T5 light fixture enough to keep corals such as Anemone, lps & sps corals? also choosing between 2x24w T5 or 3x14w which one should i go for. thanks!!

@BulkReefSupplyCom - Well 30 minutes of you guys wouldnt be too bad to be honest considering how informative and detailed this actually is... Good work guys. It is just a shame how expensive equipment and such is over here in Australia compared to the US (which is where I assume you guys are).

@1chomps We would like to go into more detail on a lot of these things but some of the episodes are already running pretty long , before ya know it you would be watching 30 minutes of Reid and I. What we would like to do when this series is done is go back over it and dedicate complete episodes to the things that need to be covered in more depth : )

@leannvlewis I hate to make blanket statements like you absolutely need a reverse osmosis deionization system but I will put it this way. In some instances it might be possible to have success with dechlorinator however I have never met a single Reefer that has had long term success that doesn’t own a RO/DI system. I would say it is possible you could use if for a fish only system in the beginning but once you are hooked by the hobby do yourself a favor and get a RO/DI system.

Is the reverse osmosis thingy necessary? If I use regular tap water, adding the start up/declorinator juice, will that work well enough? I've been an aquarium enthusiast for about 30 years. But the few salt water tanks I've had have been very small with disastrous results. Plus I must keep it basic currently, finances aren't what they used to be. Thx.

@brett35540 A protein skimmer is “very very close” to what I’d call a critical piece of equipment however I have seen dozens of tanks with long term success without one. Especially a fish only tank which this tank is currently. I assure you a skimmer will be part of the progression of this series and certainly before a coral ever enters the tank. In fact at the end of this demo I mentioned it will be part of the episode. At that point I will explain why they are so important : )

As u build it, can u be able to describe how to put the equipment together?..ive come across people putting a tank together but instead of breaking the process down they have it all built and only talk things out...

you should always no matter what have a skimmer if you dont you will just have problems and will hate the hobby.

@bookumdanom1 One of my concerns with pictured backgrounds is what it looks like once the back of the tank is no longer clean. It is a lot of work keeping the back the tank clean because it is hard to reach and you have to work around the rock. Let us know how it works out : )
