Thanks for the sub!! I feel the pain with the LFS. Mine has some good product but very very expensive. For a great LFS I have to travel 1-2 hrs away. Haha, It's always tempting to buy fish. They are soo beautiful and awesome to watch!! Good luck and thanks again for watching.
Frank Vadala
Frank Vadala - 11 years ago
I did save some of the rock. The rest I gave to the LFS so it wouldn't die off. I have recently determined the leak in the tank was due to the design of the stand I built. The top plywood ended up flexing under the weight of the system and allowed the seal at the rear bottom of the tank to separate. I have not done any updates lately. I will try to get some up soon. Thanks for watching!!

Oh and btw...great videos. Today you obtained one more new subscriber. :-) Thanks for sharing your experiences. I am so eager and excited to get our saltwater tank the way I want it. I've been researching LR for a bit now, since what I bought from my LFS was junk. And as tempting as it's been to buy new beautiful fish, I've stayed strong. I want to be sure everything I want is set right, reducing the chance of losing MORE fish...My LFS is NOT very good, which was an expensive lesson to learn.

Oh no! I hope you were able to save all of your rock while you did any repairs! Leaking is one of my biggest fears. I just obtained a 50 gal on craigslist for our African Cichlids to give them a bit more space. Little did my hubby know, I would then be putting him to work stripping & resealing it. ;-) But now we'll have piece of mind that it will be more likely to hold strong for many years to come. Sorry to hear that happened to you! Hopefully, I will see updates as I cont to watch your videos.

This is a 72g bow front tank. With the sand and rock displacing the water... there are about 60 gallons of water in the display. The sump is a 30g tank with about 20 gallons of water. Therefore, I figured the whole system is about 80 gallons.

ramman61 - 11 years ago
how many gallons is this tank?

Hussam, You don't have to turn off the skimmer. It will save a bit on power. But, you can keep running if you like. If the skimmer is not pulling any "gunk" out of the water then just run it only a few hours per day. Maybe 6-8 hrs per day.

ok thx allot ...i must turn off my skimmer then because Im using dry rock in my tank at the moment
Frank Vadala
Frank Vadala - 11 years ago
Yes. It is a very good idea to use a skimmer. The skimmer will take out any decomposing matter suspended in the water. Actually, the best way to cure the rock not in the display tank but in a separate container. Continually cleaning the rock of debris. When the rock is cured... put it in the display. This is for Live Rock and not dry rock.
Hussam Saied
Hussam Saied - 11 years ago
is it a good idea to use skimmer while cycling ?

Frank Vadala - 12 years ago
Great to hear your system is going so well. After building our systems and watching for a while... to me the fun gets a bit lost. Moving the rocks and changing the system around is a great way to get inspired again. Also, it gives you a chance to blow off the detritus from the rocks and perform a major cleaning. Good luck with the project.

hello !! i have a 120g reef ...same aquascape for year and a half .....i got motis and zoos expanding over the rocks also i used to have 2 rose bubble tip rainbow now i got 5 .... and what i want to do is re-do my aquascape ....i know its going to be a lot of work but .....i think all reefers at one point want to move rocks around right? ;) good luck .... and looking good !! ciao !!
Frank Vadala
Frank Vadala - 12 years ago
It would be easier with dry rock. That way you could build the structure outside of the tank. With the live rock it is much more difficult. Thanks for watching and the comment!!

I purchased my LR from Live Rock N Reef. They are located in Utah. There are many places you can get the same rock. However, LRNR has very good prices. If your looking for the Primo Deco Rock try searching in the Tampa ares on Google. This is were the Primo Deco comes from. Let me know if you need any help doing the research.

Google search ASM Skimmer Mods. Also, check out Reef Central Forums. There are mods for the outlet pipe, making the skimmer a recirculating skimmer and installing a diffuser plate. I have not made any changes to my skimmer as of yet.

Frank Vadala - 12 years ago
That is fine. I appreciate the honest comment. After being in the hobby for a while now, I don't think I like the rock structure either. I like using less rock and more room for the fish to swim. I also like branching rock a bit more. The tank leaked and has been taken down. I will have another build coming soon.

@4thGloryMonday - Well, I watched all your videos. Sorry to see you lost your clown fishes. That really had to suck!. As for the rock scape, you need to picture what you would like the tank to look like. Then, try to recreate it. When my wife and I made the scape we started with a basic vision and then used the rocks to make it happen. Even though we changed it several times. We always stuck to the two separate structures. Mabe U should have the wife change the rocks. lol. Good Luck!

I've been changing it for 8 months now. Will u take a look and least tell me it looks ok. My other half tells me if I would go a day without moving something around ill get use to it. Most the time she's right ill never admit it to her though. Thanks adjusterfrank

@jbliss2000007 The light is a coralife dual with a 10,000 daylight and an actinic bulb. They work together. I currently have 2 200micron socks. I am cleaning the socks quite a bit right now due to the debris from the die off. I actually just changed out the sock so every two days. So... one for back up.

The GFO - Granular Ferric Oxide helps to remove the phosphate from the water column. Phosphates are usually to blame for outbreaks of algae. The carbon is to clarify the water. I am glad that you like the videos and they have helped you with your system. I have also learned a great amount form Steelo and continue to watch his videos over and over. DA is returning my modules and they were not damaged as I thought. There will be additional vids on the RKE. I subbed and watched. Nice channel.

You have changed my mind about the reefkeeper light kit I planned on using it when I got my 100gallon+ tank but will set it up on my smaller tank (45g); now my question is I saw the gfo system and carbon will you hook that up to the system above and how and what exactly is that gfo stuff? I watch plenty of your videos and newyorksteelo now im into the asking question indepth phase cause my second tank is almost to the point of supporting life! Your videos are great will be tuning in often!!!

Frank Vadala - 13 years ago
@pbmaniac2009 Oh, Sorry. I misunderstood. I agree on the placement of that rock. The rock has a lot of growth and didn't really work on the bottom of the pile. I really stressed over the placement of all the rocks. I knew that I wanted two structures but it was very hard with the bow and the overflow in the corner. I might make some small changes. I also need to decide if I am going to add more rock or not. Thanks

Frank Vadala - 13 years ago
@pbmaniac2009 Well, I really don't know what to say about that. The rock has many soft corals on it. There are many clam shells embedded into the rock. There are quite a few whit coral skeletons on the rock. After watching the video back, I think that the color was really poor. I will try making another video with better color or filters to truly show the rock.
Frank Vadala
Frank Vadala - 13 years ago
@karlek110188 The sump is a 30g tank. 36*16*12. For this sump the 1st stage is 1" wider than the last one (13") to accommodate the skimmer better. It's still a tight fit. I struggled with this cuz I wanted the 40 breeder but there just wouldn't have been enough room in my cabinet.

Frank Vadala
Frank Vadala - 13 years ago
@bighbear6789 Thanks for watching and the comments. The ideas will come to you while watching others videos and in the planning process. Hint, Don't do as I did and keep making changes. It costs additional money every time I think of something else. Try planning the system out ahead of time to avoid major changes. Small ones will be part of the process. For my 36g build I will be making sure that I purchase all items first. Then, take your time and have fun!

@krug1313 Thanks for the comments. I was trying to give some shelves along with Hi and Low areas for any future corals. As for the cycle, Bill at Live Rock N Reef says that the cycle is still only 2 weeks due to the quality of the rock. I agree with you statement however; we will see and I will keep u posted. I am in no hurry. Lol
