Lionfish are quite common and you should be able to request a variety of species from your local fish store or favorite online retailer.

What size pvc pipe for overflow and return on a 40?
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies
Marine Depot Aquarium Supplies - 8 years ago
You only need to accomplish 400 GPH maximum of flow through the filtration.

A 3/4" or 1" drain will handle this without a problem. Return line could be 1/2 or 3/4"; in most cases it is easier to adapt to 3/4" fittings as this is the most common size on pumps within this flow range.

A 40 gallon tank is not a nano reef.

I think 40 gallons is definitely considered the maximum size to be coined a "Nano" tank.

I'm curious murray eel can live with crabs ?
flsvedlund
flsvedlund - 8 years ago
I agree that it really depends on the eel. My eel isn't too big and I keep him well fed, so he leaves my crabs alone. I have several scarlet hermit crabs and a red mithrax crab that have been living safely with my snowflake eel for over a year. However, my eel does like to crab my big turbo snails and bang them into the rocks trying to break them open. So far he hasn't succeeded and he just gets bored eventually and the snails just go about their business, haha.

+Wasurat Suwattanadeja It depends on the type of crabs and how big your eel is. An eel could certainly make a meal out of a small crab.

How do you keep coraline algae off the back of the tank?

I just use a scraping blade with a handle and scrape the back glass once a week when I do my water change.

All of the fish are currently small and do great in this size tank. The plan has always been to upgrade to a larger system as they grow. The Fu Manchu and the dwarf zebra lionfish would both do just fine in a 40B for their whole lives. The antennata would need something around a 55 gallon or bigger when she's full grown, but she's tiny now and lionfish don't swim much, so its not really an issue of space so much with them as supporting the bioload. The tang and the eel are the two that will most quickly outgrow this tank, and it has never been the intention to keep them in this tank for their whole lives. Later this year they will be moving into a larger system.

Pretty incredible, the weekly water changes I'm sure are a big part of how well it's performed since its such a small tank.
flsvedlund
flsvedlund - 8 years ago
Thank you! And yes, I really think the weekly water changes make a big difference in this tank. You can tell when I slack on them because the tank doesn't look quite as nice. Luckily I've got the equipment and maintenance all set up so that it isn't too much work to do the weekly water change.

I see a lot of featured tanks in California... I always wondered if the droughts there and scarcity of water has ever caused an issue with aquariums or runs the bills pretty high. I also had a dwarf lion that never accepted dead food after so many tries and unfortunately died from poor nutrition as there were only freshwater feed available in my area. Unique awesome tank!

+FloodXL I was worried about that a bit at the beginning, but after having the lionfish for almost 11 months now, I do not really worry about it too much. First off, the lionfish are used to my hands in the tank, so they don't see me as a threat. So its not like they ever try to attack/sting me or even get their spines up in a defensive position. The only way they'd sting me is if I'm not paying attention while working in the tank and manage to bump into their spines. If I'm just going to have my hands in the tank for a moment, I'll generally just check that I know where all the lionfish are and keep an eye on their locations. If I'm going to be working in the tank for longer, such as during water changes, I wear these thick over the elbow gloves just in case I bump into a lionfish. The eel is actually the most likely to cause an issue since he associates me with food, but has really poor eyesight, so he can't tell my fingers apart from food. I've actually been bit by him twice, but he has such a tiny mouth and tiny teeth that he doesn't do any actual damage. Mostly its just surprising and doesn't actually hurt more than a pinch. The gloves also prevent him biting since his teeth can't go through the thick plastic they're made out of.

I added the tang because I do have hair algae at times because the predator fish are messy and create nitrates. I wanted an algae eating fish but it had to be big enough to not be food for the lionfish. I decided a small bristletooth tang would work since they need less space than the other tangs. I was never a huge fan of tangs, but since I've had the tomini, I've come around and really like her! She's a great fish and adds some movement since the lionfish aren't really open water swimmers. She's also a beast at eating hair algae!

+ricor43 The lionfish actually do really well with the flow. Since the tank is a mixed reef, there are areas of higher and lower flow throughout for the different types of corals. This gives the lionfish plenty of low flow areas if they so desire. However, my dwarf zebra especially loves to swim around up in the highest flow areas. Its almost like he plays in the flow. I think lionfish can handle more flow than people think! You just also have to have low flow areas as well if they want to rest. My lionfish go all over the tank and spend plenty of time in both the low and high flow areas.
