Matt's Reef Tank | Episode 1 | Tank Construction

Welcome to the first episode of Matt's Reef. I started this because I am a reef-o-holic. Ever since I was a kid I have been amazed and intrigued at life under the surface of the ocean. The opportunity to capture even a little part of that world and do your best to raise it in your home was more than I could bear. I have had reef tanks in my life for the past 15 years or more, and have had my fair share of mistakes as well as learning experiences. From husbandry, salinity and chemical makeup, to equipment choices and lighting, I have learned a lot over the years. And all that knowledge has been put into my most recent tank venture, A 800 Liter reef community I had built from scratch for my office in Ningbo China. I am so happy with the way this tank came out, that I wanted to share it with other reefers. Most of us in the hobby have these amazing structures, but few people ever get to share in your experiences with it. Well not this tank! I want to go over all aspects of my experiences involving my tank. I also want to share some of the mistakes I have made so you do not have to go down the road I went down. I love making videos, so this whole thing goes together pretty well. So listen as I share my reef life with you. I want to thank Than from Tidal Gardens (https://www.youtube.com/user/tidalgardens) for inspiring me to make this series. His videos are always informative and beautiful. Check out ‪http://www.tidalgardens.com for info about his business. Another reason I am making this video series is because come August, I am leaving my home in China bound for a 5-year cycle trip around the world. Because I am going to be away for so long, I wanted to preserve this amazing creation, so I can look back on it for years to come. Very nice setup! Congratulation!
the JaYoe Nation
the JaYoe Nation - 8 years ago
+Mark Messa Hahah.... Aquariums in the house are absolutely not bad luck. Actually... i would argue the opposite. Of course... there is cost in setup, and problems can arise along the way that can be frustrating, but a well run tank can join a family together. Not only is it a real piece of nature that give you a new understanding and appreciation for the outside world, but it takes dedication and brings families together if they are managed properly. If you have kids, you can give them all a job to do, and can teach them about how fragile the world is... and that.. if you treat things properly... it can be a beautiful place. Each fish i have has a personality, and its a community. I think it is a wonderful thing. just keep patient, and start simple and move your way up. Just try to involve her in the setup and show her how beautiful it can be. It should not take long to change her mind. (plus.... you are never going to have a fish pissing or shitting on the carpet... or barking you awake in the morning..... haha)

After seeing your reef tank I've decided to get into aquarism. I thought that my girlfriend would like it also. Unfortunately, she mentioned that aquarium at home cause bad luck. I would also like to pick you brain on getting a decent camera. I have a Canon DSLR that was bought well before they were able to take full HD video, so I would like to get one that does. I know that they can be quite expensive, but if you could point me in the right direction, it would be greatly appreciated.

the JaYoe Nation - 9 years ago
+Wesley Forbes II in all honesty... its 90% you.. and 10% camera... get what you can afford.. just make sure that is has a good range of focus... the 18-135 should work fine... just get it and start recording. that is the fun part
Wesley Forbes II
Wesley Forbes II - 9 years ago
Thanks for your response but budget is a concern. With that in mind, what would you suggest? I am looking at a 70D that I might be able to swing. Is that a capable camera for a beginner? Also, it comes with 18-135mm lens.
the JaYoe Nation
the JaYoe Nation - 9 years ago
well.. if you want to make tank videos, i suggest you get a decent zoom lens and a macro focus.  they can be expensive, you are correct on that... but they are worth the investment.  I have a Canon 5D mark 3.  My go to lens is a 24-105, and its the default lens canon includes with the camera.  if i would upgrade i would get a 24-70, they say that is best, but it is also a couple grand.  My macro is a 100mm... and that gives you those beautiful close shots.  if you are interested you are probably looking at 3-4000 USD.  But you get what you pay for.  you could probably get a 5d mar 2 for less.. or even a 70 d or something... but the 5d3 gives you a full frame sensor.

Nice! I love what you have done. Interesting that you live overseas, I didn't think that China had Youtube? But very cool, I'm interested in the LFS overseas! Nice job

Hey Matt, love the tank!  I'm a sap for videography, and sir, your videos are fantastic!  I know you said that you will be covering your equipment in a later video, but would you mind telling me what light fixtures you're running over the tank?  I love the coloration of mixing the T5 (or could be T12) and the LED's.  Any info is appreciated!

Thanks Chris.... When you have a colorful fish tank you just have to set up a camera and the tank does all the work.. haha.  The light is a ZEDLIGHT ZT6600... to be honest it is a mainly aesthetic choice due to its position above my tank.  If I had rethought I think I would incorporate some t5's in there or something with a higher output.  I feel like I am not getting the color out of the LPS that I could be getting.  But the light is bright... penetrating and is beautiful.  http://www.zetlight.com/index.php/products?id=46

Fantastic video, can't wait for part 3!, be careful letting any of the lfs water mix with yours. I always fresh water dip my fish just to be safe and coralrx dip all my corals.

sir i think the shrimp you have is a camel shrimp and they are known to eat lps..

It is very hard to get peppermint shrimp in some parts of Asia (not sure for PRC). For my aptasia control, I am lucky to have a well behaved yellownoose butterfly. I myself have a 200g reef in Jakarta, Indonesia

i hope you know that camel shrimps are different from peppermint shrimp, those are supposed to be aptasia eaters they are subtly different with the markings on the body but a closeup of them will help decide as to what they really are but camel shrimps are known for eating ops and i suggest removing them from your beautiful reef if they are found to be so :), and in accordance to your part 2 of the video i observed you introduced the new wrasse ,i think it is coris wrasse juvi. and they tend to be non reef safe as well but if he is well behaved cheerio :)

You are correct. I have 3 of them. I bought them to try to control my aptasia. The do not seem to be bothering my coral. I am careful.

Matt, you're in Ningbo, right? So, YouTube is blocked there, what VPN service do you use?

Great video as always

the JaYoe Nation - 9 years ago
Yup. Actually I am in Hong Kong at the moment. But my VPN of choice has to be astrill. Sometimes I have trouble with it. But most is ok.
