Matt’ Reef Tank | Episode 6 | Rock-scaping, Coral Placement, Flow

Well.. I tried to get Hercules out of the tank… to no avail! I ended up going in and trying to find him…. And I emptied my tank out looking for him. UGHHHH! But with every cloud there is a silver lining. I had a chance to reorganize my rockscape and try a few things different. Along the way, I improved the location of some of the corals, and made sure that the water flow was appropriate for getting the water where it needed to go in order to feed and filter properly. follow my: Website at http://www.jayoe.com Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/jayoelife/ Twitter at https://twitter.com/jayoelife Personal Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/mcgalat JaYoe Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/JaYoeLife/ GEAR: My Big Camera: Canon 5D mark3 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/847546-REG/Canon_5260B009_EOS_5D_Mark_III.html WIDE ANGLE MOSTLY OUTDOOR QUICK ACCESS CAMERA: GoPro Hero4 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1078001-REG/gopro_chdhx_401_hero4_black_edition_adventure.html WHEN I SHOOT OUTDOOR STABLE FOOTAGE, THIS IS THE REASON: Feiyu Tech G4S http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1188097-REG/feiyu_fy_g4s_g4s_3_axis_handheld_gimbal.html

Dude I loved your rock work it looks Fantastic! I'm still new to the hobby but from what I've seen in documentaries and have heard about coral bleaching in the wild basically they get stressed and expel their zooxanthellae from their tissues which is why they lose their color. They are still alive but are then at a severe disadvantage now since they no longer have their algal pals producing carbohydrates for them and have to rely entirely on getting their nutrients from the environment. There's a good documentary on it called "chasing corals" on netflix right now.

it did not form a protective layer ... it just lost all it's symbiotic algae and then had not enough energy to produce the protective anti-UV pigments any more (the color is usually just there to give the algae perfect environment - you have this in nature too when the environment turns bad - you can sadly see it at the GBR right at the moment ... it's usually death to the coral)

New tank starter here. Was curious about where you get the rocks and coral? Salt water only? I really want a small coral looking tank with plants. I have a tank set up which is all set up with fish buy I am tired of the deco. I am still new to fish lingo as well lol

My tank is fresh water. Would anything even survive or is coral mainly for salt?
the JaYoe Nation

you should buy all your rock from a Local Fish Shop LFS that specializes in salt water. you can get dry or live rock... i recommend live rock, as it helps to establish your tank, but make sure there are no buggers on the rock that would come with it to your tank.

Can you place your coral in a general vicinity of flow and let them move to the correct spot on their own?
the JaYoe Nation
the JaYoe Nation - 7 years ago
some corals can move on their own... but most of them are not mobile.. you have to help them find the best sport for them to grow the best. in nature corals spawn all over the place, and only grow in the spots that are suitable... the other areas that do not support them will not have growth.

What you could have done to capture your crab.Place pint pot or jar leaning next to your rock then place food inside the jar which the crab will find irresistible he will then proceed to climb the rock and then dropping into the jar which he will not be able to escape job done this does work.Nice tank man.

I have that same Christmas tree Favia. Mine sits on the sand bed and hasn't lost its color. I would suggest lowering it to see if the color will come back. I believe that it shed much of its zooxanthellae because it was producing too much food from the abundance of light. Placing it in a darker location will require it to re-establish that zooxanthellae and therefore its color.

hi Matt,
regarding the bleached coral, itsl likely that while you where away something in your water parameters changed temporarily. the most likely culprit for this is a raised PH Or temperature, or both! when this happens the stress reaction of the coral is to expel the photosynthetic algae in its tissue! its unlikely it will come back, and manual feeding will be essential for its maintenance, as it will no longer be able to utilise light! I hope this helps. keep up the good work!

That favia brain that morph is commonly referred to as a christmas favia requires pretty low light and its bleached meaning its expelled its zoxanthellae (Symbiotic Algae Within the Coral) so moving it to a low light area for a few weeks should help considerably. Corals never create protective coatings but rather just let go of their skeleton, melt, and die unfortunately lol. Anyways hoped this helped!

Hey Matt, sorry about the coral. So in regards to bleaching, basically corals have these cells called zooxanthella (which is basically chlorophyll of corals and gives it it's colors). When a coral gets shocked or disturbed (in your case nitrates), it releases it's zooxanthella. This makes the coral lose it's color. I have experienced this and have found that feeding amino acids in weekly helps bring back the coral's colors. This takes a lot of time, however the color comes back exponentially. Like with my anemone, for the first month there was no sign of recovery. However after a month, 1 tentacle started to color up, a week later 10 tentacles, then fourth of the anemone has coloured up etc etc. So my suggestions is to dose amino acids if you were to encounter this situation again.

I also suggest that you start dosing amino acids now as it brings out coloration and really benefits the health of colors.

Good luck, and happy reefing.
the JaYoe Nation
the JaYoe Nation - 8 years ago
+KMreef thanks boss... i have actually been giving a regiment of 2 part reef energy solution from RED SEA.... every day i turn all the pumps off and with a small syringe i dose each color with a the mix added in with some phytoplankton that i let maranade for a day... seems to be working. I have already seen my corals gain a little color and start growing like crazy... of course that could be that i am giving them EXTRA attention as well... but i am sure adding the proteins and amino acids are doing a lot of work too... i let the water stagnate for like a hour after each dose to make sure the corals get a chance to suck it all up....

Because of the stress the coral "ejected" it's zooxanthellae algae leaving the corals tissue opaque. Unfortunately, without the algae the coral was left unable to produce the food it needed. As a result the tissues will slowly necrose.
Jeremy Finn
Jeremy Finn - 8 years ago
+the JaYoe Nation - I'm actually not sure. It looked as though there was still a bit of green left in the tissue - this would be a cause for hope. However, I have never seen a LPS recover from bleaching that bad. Sorry that you lost it.

My tank is currently recovering from a magnesium spike - my dosing pump somehow got stuck in the on position. Not a great feeling.

Enjoy your adventures. Peace/blessings.

Hey Matt have you tried Red Sea reef energy part a and b? It help coral zooxanthellae color back up by providing nutrition. The reason why they lose color is because their zooxanthellae dies off leaving the soft tissue. My BTA was fading but I gave it Red Sea energy and it came back up! Jayoe!
