So if my skimmer release micro bubbles to my tank it's ok?
Dose it effect coral or fish?

The same thing happen when I am too lazy to top off my tank and water level got below the return pump.

it makes my tank have air pockets under rock.. not sure good or bad
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
That would mean your bubbles are way to big. You want only the tineys ones making it into the tank.. The bubbles coming out of the return should be the size of a pinhead.

I started doing micro bubbles a few years ago to increase PH. I plumb bubbler to the outside for fresh air. I just place the stone near the return pump but far enough away not to get the bigger bubbles. Run at night. Keeps the nutrients down better than not.

Pumping in outside air would be a fewer way to improve it

Interesting concept. I was always under the impression that micro bubbles in the tank was a negative thing because it was hard on the fish/corals. Forcing them both to expend extra energy to create more protective slime since the bubbles stuck to and subsequently stripped it off of them. Tank looks good and healthy so I'm guessing you haven't run into any issues. Good Video!

Big bubbles are bad but the micro ones are beneficial! They are about the size of a pin head.. you want them to be very tiny!

i have been doing this for about 2years now. every morning and night for about 4hrs. but i have my wooden air stone right under the return pump.
heaps of bubbles go into the tank and all my corals let off like a slim coat. i have also found that my skimmer pulls even more crap out too

Great video! Ive been scrubbing over 3 months with great results. I don't run a skimmer, so the additional O2 is always nice. I do the same as Bluto and run a reverse cycle. Probably helping the PH at night too. I did a few videos on it as I tracked the progression from scrubbing.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience Micah, Ill be sure to check out your videos later. Its great to hear that its been working so well on a skimmer-less system. Do you run filter socks on your tank?

Hey Deven, I was doing it for a while but as I dont have an overflow to catch the released detritus et al, it seemed a little pointless, I also do not have a sump so my method was very unorthodox but effective to some extent... my water column was riddled with micro bubbles for 10 hrs a day. (I turned it off for an hour before lights on and after lights out for everything to settle down for the night/wake up) before being blasted with bubbles. Maybe I'll set it up again for demonstration purposes on how i do it with no sump, no skimmer and no overflow...
DrOfWelshMagic
DrOfWelshMagic - 7 years ago
Oh yes mate for sure, I think half of it is still there after 4 weeks worth of water changes lol. I would deffo reccomend to anyone. I have seen no ill efects whatsoever to any livestock either,
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
With out the overflow you would prob only see half the benefits. (Mainly raised ph by driving it co2). Did you notice more stuff building on your surface after running it all night?

i used to do it on my tank. I had my airstone close to my return and it worked well although I ended up sticking it in the tank right behind my circulation pump and had a lot! more bubbles throughout my tank, I saw a huge increase in how efficient it was, within an hour I would have heaps of debris floating, worked great. only downside was I was getting bubbles stuck under my corals and rocks and I would have to turkey bast them every day. ended up just quitting altogether as it was too much maintanence now I just stick it in the sump and turn on at night to keep ph up. I'm not sure how well its working for you with such minimal bubbles but try out sticking the airstone right on the intake of your return or infront of your gyre. gaurenteed you will see a huge difference.

ReefDudes - 7 years ago
Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I find having only the tineyest bubbles make it into the tank help prevents them from getting stuck under rocks

With the wood air stone in your sump try having it to the side or just above the pump so the big bubbles rise and only the tiny ones get sucked in

What kind of filter do you have? For it to work they need to be super tiny barely noticeable bubbles.. you dont want big ones getting sucked into your pump

I do love my coffee! Lots have have had good success from it. I figured at the very least it would give me a PH boost at night which never hurts.. Now the tank is looking amazing (although i also started red sea coral colors..so cant 100% say which is which but i'm sure they both add to the magic)
If you decide to give it a whirl keep me updated on your findings.
