Multiple Tangs in Reef Tank - Dealing with Aggressive Tangs

Multiple Tangs in the reef tank? As part of a fish rescue mission I found a Powder blue tang at my doorstep needing a home. I was a bit hesitant to add it as I already had a Hippo tang and a Yellow tang established in my tank.. Now i was worried about the Hippo tang and the Powder blue tang since they are the same color.. They kibosh-ed taht theory and basically ignored each-other.. the Yellow tang on the other hand had a bit of a superiority complex.. To help distract his agression I used the mirror trick to distract him and let the powder blue settle in. Now ideally I would have used an Acclimation box like this http://amzn.to/2xzLLdt However due to the special deliver i didn't have time to source one.

Hey, How much gallon do you have in your tank?:D I wanna add a powder blue two i have 150 gallon i am not sure if i can add :d
can you help me?
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
Sokrates Bantis you should be safe! In my opinion it’s more about the swing space with tangs rather than the water volume. Ideally 5.5-6’ long is ideal.

Dan Mize after the first day they have been pretty good. The yellow tang was very aggressive at first and distracting him with his own reflection seemed to give the powder blue home to settle in

they should be fine you have lot of finding spot for all your tangs. One thing you could of done different is maybe added powder blue at night time.

That mirror trick works great not only for tangs, but for other aggressive fish like Anthias and angelfish. Also, another tip so you don't use a net next time to take the fish from the bucket to the tank is to use a plastic strainer like the ones found at the dollar store. I like to use those to net fish out so I don't damage their fins and stress them out
ReefDudes
ReefDudes - 7 years ago
Good call on the strainer! ill pick my self up a fish strainer!!!!!

I'm trying to decide if I want to take the risk of adding more tangs to my new 125 gal.  I've got a chocolate and yellow now.  Would like to add a Hippo or Powder blue.  Looks like its working out for you so far.  Keep ups posted.

I admire your tank and water quality.I can't wait to start with my tank.. I want a 200 gallons white 750 xl Red Sea reefer .., hoping to keep lots of fishes ., I have 8 months doing research on how to set up the tank to handle the bio load .. I love soft corals but am in it for the fishes .. your videos and live chats are very informative... keep the information coming :)
