My 100g reef tank with no sump. One year on in H.D.

A lot has chamged in one year!!. The big difference is every thing has grown, and so has my knowledge!!. If you want to make things simple then just hang a skimmer on the back, and put some T.5 lights over head. Not the best reef on youtube, but given the low cost when compared to some, and the fact that 2 out of 3 people fail in the hobby, I can't complain. .

I’m setting up a 95 gallon salwater fish tank. I just put the sand in and the rocks. How long do you think I will have to wait to put the plants and coral in? Also, do you think coral can grow on an artificial item, like a sunken ship? Also, what king of glue do you use to paste you rocks together and put the coral on the rocks? I’m kinda new to saltwater, I used to have a freshwater tank

VinkingamiingYT I have a 15 part series on how to set up a salt water tank. What kind of rocks are you using. You need to get some fish in there once the tank is fully cycled. And then make sure you have low levels of phosphate and nitrate. You need to wait about 3 months for the tank to settle down.

I think it looks pretty damn good. So you just use canister filter and a skimmer and that's it? Well plus the t5 light?

Hey there doc, I know this is older, but the tank is awesome. Looking for some quick tips on upgrading my tank. I'm looking At either a Red Sea max 65 gal or just setting up the 75 gal I already have with no sump. I have a brand new Eshopps skimmer rated for 100 gal, phosban 150 with gfo and carbon, and the Chinese leds off Ebay for lighting. I have 2 jebao rw4s for flow. Thinkin maybe a. Aqua clear110 for mechanical. Should I use my sand from my 37 gal reef or just start with new sand? Any other advice on the upgrade is appreciated. Been reefing for only about a year

They are quite powerful. I have one above my 10 gallon frag tank and I started at 12 inches above the tank as low as I could dim them and Zoos were starting to bleach. Now it's 14 inches above the tank and might have to raise it up a bit higher

Your lighting sounds good. Just make sure you don't turn them up to high. May be start with them as low as 30%. Then turn them up slowly. Try to find out what setting other reefers uses. If you set them at 70-100% all your corals might die!!.
Happy reefing.

Thank you for the fast and detailed response. I think I'll pass on the Red Sea tank didn't know I would need a chiller for it. My lighting is 2 of the 165 watt full spectrum dimmable LEDs. I have seen some great tanks even SPS tanks with these lights with over a year of success. I just have soft coral for now anyway. I will check out those videos. Thanks again Doc

Your Eshopps skimmer is mechanical filtration. Your phosban 150 is both mechanical and chemical filtration. What do want the aquaclear 110 for. You have all the filtration you need. Unless you want to put the GFO and carbon in separate filters. I just use the one phosban reactor for both.
Not sure about the lights. Many LED won't grow coral. A high powered LED unit should use about 60+ watts of power.
Jebao don't always last. I have heard a lot of good and bad things about them. I would stick with them for now.
You need 20-30 times your tank volume per hour for flow.
Start with a new dry sand bed. The old one could be full of waste and phosphates. You could if you really wanted to just use the top layer.
Red sea are not that expensive compared to buying all the stuff separately. But if you buy everything separately you can choose what you want. One thing Red Sea don't tell you, is that you will need a chiller with most red sea max tanks. This can add £400 ($600) to the start up cost. as long as you have enough flow, and the right lighting, I would stick with what you have already. See my vid how to build a reef tank part 13 or 14, on reef tank setup, and build cost.

Awesome thanks for the help.... what are your thoughts about haveing a doceing pump
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 9 years ago
When I set up my first reef tank I did not use dosing pumps. I had know idea what I was doing back then. I just dosed calcium and carbonate by hand. It was 2 years before I gave up dosing by hand, and got a 3 line dosing pump.
I couldn't live with out then now, but for any newbe I would wait, till you have some corals in your tank. A first you may only need to dose once a week, so it is easy. only when you need to dose every day will you need dosing pumps.
I think water chemistry is the last of your worries. Dosing pumps cost £100- 300 ($150-450 USD) Find out if you can keep fish and a few easy corals first!!!!.

Hi there i just purchased a 55 gallon and want to do a coral tank with no sump.... what should I do to get it started filtration system wise.. thank you in advance

You need a protein skimmer rated for 1 and a half times your tank volume, that will hang on the back. You need a hang on the back phosban reactor, filled with phosphate remover, and activated carbon. You need 50 pounds (25kg) of live rock. A 1-2 inch dry sand bed. 2 power heads rated at 500-700 gallons per hour each.
I have a whole 15 part video series on how to build a reef. Miss out part 4. Read parts 10/11 further down the line when you want to add corals. You have a lot of reading and learning to do!!!.

How often do you do water change and how much?

TheFishTank Doc. - 9 years ago
Look at my vid part 13 how to build a reef tank. I do 5% every week. Which is standard for a reef tank with invertebrates and S.P.S corals.

Hi, I'm looking to set up my 70g tank into a reef with no sump. What would you recommend for this. I own 2 70g rated canister filters, multiple powers heads/heaters/air pumps. I just need the good lights and protein skimmer then right?
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 9 years ago
Your welcome.
A sump will give you a bit of extra water volume, and make things neater, but it is not a must have, to have a great looking tank.
In your case you would need to drill the tank with a hole for the overflow, and have the right space under the tank for the sump. Add the cost of sump + return pump ect......

Thanks so much! This was a big help! It got exhausting asking in forums and getting lectured about a sump.
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 9 years ago
Good point. For a 10-20 gallon nano you could by it from your local fish store. For a 70g I reccomend you by one. They are not that expensive. Tap water is full of phosohates no good for a salt water tank.

Check out my latest video on by 100g build costs and maintanace shedual.
You wont need the air pumps, and canister fillters are not that good for salt water tanks. (see part 8 of how to build a reef tank). Phosban/carbon reactors are better. You do not need any dosing pumps at the moment. You will need some live or dry rock, a good refractomiter to chek the salinity, and of cause some salt.
The best advice is to start off with a fish only tank, then add corals later.
You probably have some lights already. You don't need any speial lights for a fish only tank. Once you are confident at keeping fish, doing water changes and keeping phosphates below 0.03, then get some lighting and corals!!!.

Where did you get your reef from? Do you buy it like that or does it come in pieces, or do you buy the rocks only?
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 9 years ago
you by the rocks only. They are ocean rocks made of calcium carbonate. You can buy them live, or dry.

You have some nice corals in there. Is it a rio 400 tank? Ive sumped mine as I didn't want the skimmer and heater in the DT.
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 9 years ago
Thanks. It's a second hand tank 2 feet high, 5 feet wide, and 1.5 fron-back, but the same size as a rio I think. Having no sump makes life easier. having a sump makes life neater. There is know right or wrong.
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 10 years ago
Having no sump makes it easier!!. I use a T.M.C. V2 1,000 skimmer. The motor/pump is quite big, but I do not light it up, so it is less visable. For your 200litre, I would go for the V2 300 compact skimmer. With any compact skimmer, the pump sits out side the tank. You need a phosban reactor filled with carbon, and G.F.O(rowa phos). This can also hang on the back. Some compact skimmers can be filled with carbon & g.f.o meaning no nead for a separate phosban reactor!!.

Hello! I'm starting to build a Reef! like yours without a sump! but 200 liters, as you've managed to do that without a sump to have it so cute?? which filter you use? that skkimer got? would you say the steps I do to be so? thank you very much
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 10 years ago
A phosban reactor removes phosphate to keep the algae away!!. It does not remove nitrate. The denitrifying bacteria and water changes do that.
TheFishTank Doc.
TheFishTank Doc. - 10 years ago
Thank you. I have a hang on the back Skimmer, and hang on the back phosban reactor, filled with Rowa Phos and activated carbon. As long as you clean the floss very few days, internal filters are great.

That's a lovely looking tank. I don't bother with a sump either. The only thing I have is an internal filter with carbon and rowaphos and floss.
