Beautiful tank! Do you do anything special for your flowerpot to stay opened so nice?
christofficer3
christofficer3 - 8 years ago
+Ashley L they are found in lagoons where the water is turbid so they do enjoy nutirent rich water. most reef keepers strive for low nutrient environments which is why these corals arent popular as they typically dont thrive in these style aquariums. I work now in the aquarium industry and have seen lots of angry gonios. Be very very gentle with them if you have to move them. they are in my experience very prone to bacterial infects and STN, with that said, damage to the tissue must be avoided at all costs. Hope he perks up! try feeding him with all pumps off and see if you get any kind of response.

Thanks for the advice!! I will try that. Mine has been closed for about a week now, I don't know what's going on with it. I did notice it likes it better when my nitrates are slightly higher. They are some strange corals, but very beautiful:) I did notice that mine liked marine snow, but now he wont even open up for that lol

Thanks! the flowerpot was a Alveopora, which is the branching variant. they are IMO much easier to keep alive. I dosed Brightwell trace elements 3x a week which i think is the secret. you can spot feed them with Julians Sprung's Goniopwder for faster growth, but I never did :D

that was a rose bubble tip anemone. for some reason these anemones will sometimes make very long tentacles instead of the iconic bubble tips.

is it still up and running?  the flow seems so minimal how do you avoid cyano/algae?  If so do you still have the tang?
christofficer3
christofficer3 - 8 years ago

I had to take it down because it was setup in my parents home. I was 22 at the time still living at home. It was covering a main vent from the furnace and made the room really cold. I didn't Think about it when I set it up.... lol. The HOT5 I would with out a doubt reccomend. Great output with minimal heat. Never needed a chiller. Never had problems with temperature swings. Led is coming around but they aren't reasonably priced for the fixtures that can actually support corals.

christofficer3 - 11 years ago
Pc.. I think those yellow polyps might actually be photosynthetic. Try target feeding. Note.. this tank is no longer running. Thanks for all the comments. My open brain got HUGE so did my bubble coral. They got so big I had to feed them sIlversides. Never ran protein skimmer. the HOB filters were awesome. Just goes to show if you can commit to 10% weekly water changes, you CAN have a beautiful reef tank without fancy stumps and protein skimmers. Remember S.P.S. S.tability P.rovides S.uccess

Very nice. What is the coral at 1:30? Also, what bulbs are you using on your fixture? I have a 4 bulb t5 system but I can't figure out the lighting that brings out the colours of my zoas.
